3 Things You Don't Know About The AS50 « Thread Started on May 22, 2012, 8:16am »
The AS50 is the last weapon you'd expect to pick up on the battlegrounds of MW3. But, that's not because it's a "bad" weapon. After some close scrutiny, I've identified three things you probably don't know about the AS50:
If you don't have time to watch the video, the three secrets are:
3) Using the prone position to improve the AS50's characteristics
2) Understanding that some sniper rifles are not high-mobility weapons
1) Taking advantage of the AS50's unique scope magnification

Meh, the low zoom scope makes a nice free variable-zoom scope on low setting/ACOG with breath holding and w/o silly reticules, but I'd rather have the Barrett for pretty much everything else.

As much as I like the overall feel of the AS50, it's more or less a poor mans' Barrett .50cal. One could just spray, use Speed and Variable Zoom on the latter then call it a day. :|

Shiny intro, but unfortunately, most of these are not unique to the AS50.
Things I would have noted: -The AS50's low sway is not purely visual consequent of the low zoom: it does indeed have less sway than the other sniper rifle. -However, this sway advantage is lost when using the variable zoom. In contrast, an ACOG will reduce the sway further. -Likewise, the AS50 does actually possess less recoil than the Barrett: this is not merely an optical illusion due to the reduced magnification and the reduced recoil is apparent even at the lower fire rate of the AS50.

Well it's worth noting that the AS50's scope clocks in at 2.4x magnification, while every other variable zoom scope has a higher lowest magnification, at 2.8x. Small difference, but difference nonetheless.
It's a shame that they put a fire limit on the AS50, I feel it would be balanced with the Barrett if it didn't have one
I'd have to disagree. The AS50's fire rate forced me to take my time between shots. The Barret might shoot faster, but it doesn't force accuracy the way that the AS50 does.

Maybe I disagree because I'm terrible at sniping and I find the rate of fire useful at close range haha.

in really really close range probably yes, panic firing with Barrett might be more devastating, but practically - the firecap on AS50 does not matter [if comparing vs Barrett]

Not true. I tested this (firing both at the same rate of fire using a macro) and didn't notice any difference. The recoil is a bit random, so sometimes one of them seems to be better.

My statement was based on wwa's testing: perhaps he should have been a bit more thorough.

That's because he uses the maximum rates of fire for each of them, but if you fire at the same RoF, then the recoils are pretty similar.
Either way, my issue with the AS50 is the fact that it has no ammo. If you're using a thermal or variable zoom, barret is infinitely better just because you don't need to reload every other kill.

I kinda like the firecap. It seems recenter for a followup shot at just the same time that you can fire another shot. Although I have to agree that it's just a doo-dooty Barret. It still has a good feel to it though.
