A lot of people will start playing BO2 in the next a few days and at the beginning they will be at a loss what to use when they only have limited customization options available. So I am starting this thread as a place for more experienced (higher levels) players to give less experienced (lower level) players pointers.
To kick things off, below is a day 1 suggestion video from OpTic NadeShot:
Since he has been doing league play, it is unclear to me whether his suggestions are based on the assumptions that everything is unlocked (which is the case for League Play). If that's the case, then his video is of little practical value to the majority of us who are planning to focus on prestiging first and as a result at the mercy of what progression system is giving up as we rank up.

The biggest question in my mind at this point: which weapons to use for each weapon class that are meeting 2 criteria:
1) unlocked early; 2) kick ass :-)
For example: in MW3 the M4A1 is unlocked at the very beginning and it is a solid weapon that can be used throughout an entire prestige if I have to.

the level 4 weapons: MTAR, Type 25 LSAT, PDW57, DSR50, R870, definitely kick some ass.
Tac 45 is a good starting pistol also.
Even the default classes(from what I've seen) look pretty good. That Skorpion EVO III setup with ghost ,looks decent.

Mp7, lightweight, marathon, quickdraw, laser sight. Run around like an idiot and kill everything that moves.
MTar with 3 attachments is a fully capable assault rifle. I would advise sticking with one AR because if you start using them as you unlock them then you might not get to an optimal setup on one for a long time...

Where are the killstreaks? If you are a new player take the highest three killstreaks. You are obviously going to beast right away and get them. Don't take lowest three or pick 3 of out of the lowest 5 with a UAV being mandatory.....

Here's my suggestion for new players:
Use the MP7, Tar, and Type25 until you get the Vector, substitute Vector for MP7, then use those guns until you get the FAL. Once you get the FAL, enjoy slaughtering the enemies.

Supposedly the DS50 sniper is a OHK from the waist up too. That must only be at 3pm on Tuesdays during Spring months when the moon is in a waxing crescent phase because I get lots of waist-up hit markers...

Default Scorpion EVO class is GREAT! You get Scavenger WAY earlier, and you can pair Scavenger with one of your favorite guns you pick up off a corpse. Plus you get some slight bonus from the slightly-crappy Ghost and Dead Silence perks. The Scorpion itself is a great CQC/Medium-range gun, with it's incredible rate of fire. Jsut don't be tempted to use it on someone in distance outside of it's ideal range.
PDW, MP7, MTar, Type95. Add Laser-sight. Add Silencer, Grip, or FastMags based on what you find you do best with. Spam your nades, or if you want to go with simple gun-only, remove nades for more Perks. Dexterity is surprisingly useful and fun, letting you mantle walls VERY fast, and climb ladders very fast. Pick up good spare secondary weap when you can safely do so. Stay away from Shotguns, Sniper Rifles, Pistols, and Launchers unless you feel you do well with them. Like Goalie said, once you get access to Vector, switch to that. Add Laser-Sight, Grip, and FastMag or ExtMag. Add Shock Charges when you get a chance. UAV, Guardian, Sentrygun are great.
FAL is great, but only if you get a decent secondary(they are all over the ground).
This is around where I am currently. There are WAY better options and setups waiting to be unlocked.
Added note about Guardians: Guardians are fantastic. They can't be knifed, so enemy must dump bullets(and EMPs in future) into them. Find a narrow-ish alley(not to narrow, though), and place the Guardian shooting diagonally down the alley, crossing over from one side of alley to the other side, diagonally. This reason is two-fold: so that they cannot get through the alley without being nicked, and if it is a slightly-wide alley, they are likely to have to run through MORE of the beam, because the beam is at a diagonal angle. The diagonal placement also lets you place the Guardian itself safely out of the line of sight if someone is staring straight down the alley. Guardian has a long reach. The Guardian lasts a LONG time if not destroyed.

Found the scorestreaks BTW.

That must only be at 3pm on Tuesdays during Spring months when the moon is in a waxing crescent phase because I get lots of waist-up hit markers... I had no problem with this after using it for a short time yesterday, I got numerous OHK's from the waist up. It feels like a monster an puts them down HARD, but the delay between shots is horrible after using the SVU...
