Which is the best gun in each category?
I would like to leave this thread only for the mentioned users as they all have above 10,000 posts so I assume they are the most experienced, but if anyone else wants to join feel free too.

Please use emperical and up-to-date evidence and objective reasoning.

Assault: AEK, with HBAR, Foregrip, and any sight, it has the full 900 RPM, fair spread, and medium recoil, making it the quintessential assault rifle, accurate, and very high powered

Engie: M4A1, low spread, a high fire rate, and predictable recoil, meaning it outclasses most other engie weapons with a bit of practice to manage its higher than average class recoil

LMG: M240B, as it has the highest fire rate for the three hit kill LMGs, and therefore will be able to get kills fastest from a bipod position

Sniper: SKS, 330 RPM, two hit kill, mainly vertical recoil and a flash suppressor

PDW: ASVAL, average fire rate for the class, amazing long range damage, a low first shot multiplier, silenced by default, the only drawback is that Emags are needed (and large moving spread)

Shotgun: DAO-12, it has the highest fire rate of the semi autos, large capacity, and medium spread, making it good at close-medium range, and the least affected by suppression, as its fire rate allows you to get at least one shot on target

Pistol: M93, as it was buffed to 25-13.75 over the patch, and since in semi auto mode it has lower recoil than any other pistol, higher capacity, and the ability to go full auto, it soundly outclasses any non-silenced pistol for self defence

Oh, I don't actually have 10,000 posts, I'm assuming that's just something Den did for approved members to give them the "True Bro" status right off the bat. My actual post count is probably more around 50.

Also, something which is incredibly problematic for the purpose of the thread, I don't have Battlefield 3. My computer can't run it (XP) and I haven't had the cash to snag the PS3 verison.

So, sorry about that. I appreciate the thought though.

i'd pretty much insist that there is no "best" gun for each category. they are all fairly balanced (with the occasional one that is a bit too easy or one or two useles ones) and have their ups and downs. some people will perform better with a high recoil high damage G3, while others will do better with an recoilles m16. it really depends on the player, not on the gun. you should get the idea out of your head that there is weapons that are mathematicly superior to others.

Assault: I'd recommend you'd try the M416 and the G3 as they are my favorites, but as others have said any gun competes.

Engineer: M4A1 all the way

Support: Couldn't give you a good LMG honestly, I always liked PDWs more than them, so I'm going to say the VAL or perhaps the P90 are my favorites, some swear by the mp7 though.

Recon: M98B all the way, its higher bullet travel speed is more than noticeable and quite helpful for longer range engagements.(To appease the PTFO crowd i'll point out that the VAL is quite useful for it for rushing)

Oh and as far as sidearms go, its all about the 44 Magnum, perhaps scoped if you'd like though I prefer vanilla. That 1 shot to the head and 2 shot body...

I'm no pro and my knowledge is based on what I have read and experience in my last two weeks of bf3 since I left ;D

Didjeridu and Ruby are very knowledgeable as well as Mrite. There is no 'best' weapon for each class and the major factor on a weapon is the player.

For example the M4A1 for engineer is statistically the best, but if you are a player that is always on the move and in people's faces it might not work out as well as the A-91. The A-91 has the same stats as the M4A1 but slower reload and more recoil. Why would you use it right? Well it has better hip-fire than the M4A1 and it's the only Engineer Carbine that has fast ADS movement speed. So based on your play style the M4A1 might not be your thing. Personally, I've enjoyed the G36C silenced.

For the assault rifles for example the AEK is boss! But it's all based on your playstyle. If you like to keep on the move and keep fools down than the AEK is yours as it dominates the close to mid range game. But what if your the more conservative player? The player that likes to back his squad up and control a section allowing your teammates to spawn and do their thing? Well the AN94 burst-fire with grip+heavy will definitely be your weapon. You can hold down a spot with precision fire moving conservatively through the map helping your team destroy those dirty mcoms. Personally, I've enjoyed the KH2002 with grip+hbar.

Same for shotties, DAO is better but I've enjoyed the Saiga12 due to the faster reload and how awesome it looks!

OP the best thing I can tell you is to try them all. Make it a project, try different attachments because each weapon reacts differently to each attachement and find out what works for you.

Sorry to answer your post with this corny reply but I've personally done well with underated weapons through my fps history:
BC1 - Uzi (versus the superior ump45, xm8c and pp2k)
BC2 - Uzi (versus the superior ump45, xm8c, pp2k and a9a1)
Blops - MP5K (versus the superior ak74u)
MW3 - UMP45 (versus the superior pp90, p90 and mp7)

I just felt comfortable with those guns.

The whole 10,000 posts thing is kind of an inside joke for this forum. I doubt even the brotius maximus himself has that many. Also, this thread looks awfully familiar...Anyway, I'll spare the lecture and regurgitate my opinion.

Assault
M16 - good speed, low recoil, high velocity, fast reloads. Good at everything, and easy to use. Doesn't need a foregrip, so M320 or M26 are great options. Use either version.

Engineer
M4 - same thing as the M16, but limited to mid-range at best. Add a heavy barrel, and it comes close to its big brother.

Support
QBB - good capacity without extended, fairly accurate, high velocity, bullpup quirks. You can go either way with the superior LMG foregrip, or the bipod. Not as specialized as M27 or RPK, but much more versatile.

PKP - high damage, fast reloads (for a belt LMG). Good balance between the raw power of the M240, and the accuracy of the M60. Bipod and extended a must.

Recon
SKS - high RoF, exclusive flash suppressor, high capacity. It was always good, but the recent buff made it amazing. Use if you're a more aggressive Recon.

M39 - high RoF, high velocity. The middle ground between the SKS and a bolt-action. Use if you're kind of aggressive.

L96 - second fastest bolt, second fastest velocity. Nothing impressive, but It's good at everything a sniper rifle needs to be good at, while not being as limited as the M98. Use for sniping obviously.

PDW
VAL - high damage, high RoF, super fast reloads. Compared side by side to the other PDWs, it speaks for itself. Great for Engis who want an AR, and good for Recons who for whatever reason hate the SKS.

Shotgun
USAS - high RoF, decent reloads, decent capacity. Still outshines every other shotgun for buckshot/flechette, especially since they're somewhat weaker now. Best for frags too, but no one uses that.

*anything but USAS/MK3* - for slugs. 870 has raw power up close, the others are great for speed. Semi-auto slugs have crazy damage now. Use whatever floats your boat.

Also, the thread title is misleading. I thought we were going to have a fight to the death, a cook off, thumb wrestling competition...

symthic has the most up to date data, i'm not sure if den has even updated his charts since the first patch, and the beta section of symthic has the latest patch data, but these forums are cooler (in my opinion)

Use that until he finishes the charts, then it'll be on the main page. Den's stats are from...launch. But yeah, there are more people on symthic's forum, but hey, we're more fun.

PS: the 10,000 posts were applied to our account from Den himself when he recognized us as "True Bros" The only qualification was that you had to post "you are my bro, bro" at the end of your first post. So, indeed, I am not more knowledgeable or better, just old.

Also, I am definitely down for some epic match between the Den crew.

Per class there are always best weapons and worst weapons. I will give you some underrated weapons.

Assault:

F2000: You get the hipfire of the KH2002 plus the means to use it, with your automatic fire. Fast movement while ADS, but unfortunately has a rough first kick.

Engineer:

QBZ-95B. You get a free foregrip. Use it with a Heavy Barrel and a laser sight, and the gun is super accurate (like PDW accurate) from the hip. Not great up close, but you can use that hipfire at extended ranges.

Support:

QBB-95. No need for extended mags, as it only gives you a marginal amount. Easily controllable for sure. Kicks left, which is unique and awesome/

Recon:

QBU-88. Dat hipfire

PDW's:

MP7. No more needs to be said about this beast.

Pistols:

MP-412. My favorite pistol from BC2 is back again, and it is great after patch. You will only be using it in 2 hit kill range anyway, so it offers a faster-firing, faster-reloading competitor to the .44. I find the .44 too cumbersome, and when ADS with the .44, I feel like I have to wait a second before the gun shake calms down. Not so with the 412.

So... who wants to throw down in some SQDM?

Sorta semi-on-topic again.

Guns that give me raging Hemorrhoids:

Type-88 LMG. This gun has the beautiful combination of huge spread, no heavy barrel availability, and lethargic fire rate, coupled with a side of huge hipfire and unfavorable recoil. AVOID

F2000. As much as I love this gun, the slow reloads and the first-shot recoil is much too high, needs more balancing.

UMP. Still way to mediocre when compared to it's main competition, the PP-2K. It's like the most unremarkable gun that exists.

MK3A1. Why even use it in the face of the Semi-Autos or the USAS.

.44. I may be alone, but I find the MP412 vastly more useful in any situation where I want to use a pistol (mostly below 10m length, I don't need to pistol snipe).
