I'm really liking the customization options in this game, both for armour and for the weapon itself.

I've gone for the long barrelled M27 with 1.5x sight, which is good as it is, but have added extended mags (always a favourite of mine) and a recoil suppressor (can't remember the exact name). This last was a bit more expensive (3000+ in game currency) but anything that reduces recoil is worth paying for; accuracy is king.

Liking this weapon; managing to make snipers uncomfortable, and not bad for spraying people down at close range either (will be even better with emags).

About to try out magnum ammo; we'll see if that is worth it.

Also trying out some of the armour inserts; these I obtained in the common and rare loot (armour is all I have obtained in fact). Faster regen and +10 health ;D

Oh yeah. Since the NDA is gone and this game is actually pretty good, Ghost Recon Board.

Also, I fear my Shotgun shenanigans is making everyone think that shotguns are "overpowered".
Every round I go where I'm on top with the M500, there are several people complaining about the shotguns.

It's not like BF or COD's pump action that can fire three or so times a second.
This M500 takes one full second before I can shoot again.
The Pentagun takes half a second (but that usually takes me two or three shots to kill if the enemy is a fair distance away).

If I miss or don't kill in the first shot (and the enemy is aware of me, not me flanking them as usual), I should be dead.
If I'm NOT dead before I take my second shot (let alone my third shot), there's nothing the guy I kill can complain about.
Not to mention if I go up against more than one person at a time, this small capacity and long reload is a death sentence.
In most cases, I barely inch ahead with a 2:1 kill ratio. I only ever do better because I'm getting up close and shooting them in their blind spot.

If shotguns are "overpowered" then sniper rifles are even more overpowered as they exist on the same concept of one shot kills granted with a user's good aim.
A sniper rifle has no problem getting a one or two shot kill at any range. A shotgun isn't nearly as generous.

Submachineguns and some of the later ARs and LMGs are downright broken in comparison.
The Mk17 is devastating at all ranges if you just rapidly tap in single fire mode. Put some recoil dampener attachments on those automatics and you've got rapid death.
The instantaneous kill of the pump action shotgun at close range is the only thing it has going for it.

What's the effective range of a shotgun in this? Are they narrow spread kinds or are they the Call of Duty/Battlefield blunderbuss kind?

For some reason shotguns are even more satisfying in third person shooters. Gears of War is the prime example of that.

Because of the FOV, perspective changes and the crosshairs possibly not being accurate to the actual spread of weapons, it's difficult to tell exactly how wide the spread is.

Shooting the Pentagun at a wall with its slightly worse accuracy, the shotguns appear to have the "cone within a cone" - used in previous GR and R6 games - where the grouping stays somewhat tight, but the shot can go anywhere.
Perhaps a 5° cone but with the shot still focusing in a 3° spread.
Like this, the shotguns might land everything in one corner of the crosshair, potentially missing the enemy entirely.

I'm not sure if sighting up improves, focuses the shot somewhere in the middle or maybe even makes it worse?

From the looks of it, the M500 SV has maybe a 2.0° grouping within a 4.0° spread. Combined with its 238 damage divided among eight pellets, it is enough for a high one hit kill chance if your aim is dead on out to maybe ten meters, but after that the damage and spread barely take off a fraction of health (seems a pellet has a minimum of 6 damage after about 20m).

It is definitely tighter than the shotguns in MW3. Basically where the MW3 shotguns (no proficiencies) stop doing anything, the GRO shotguns only start becoming weak and inconsistent, rarely netting a one shot kill.

I'd say they're quite comparable to BF3's shotguns in accuracy, though trading rate of fire for more damage (which is necessary since player health goes above 100 and damage reduction due to armor and plating).
For reference, the fastest shotgun (M1014 Compact) fires at 200 rounds per minute. Most fire at 120 or less.
That is to say most of the semi-automatic shotguns are firing close to the rate of BF3's pump action.

Another thing to consider is that the health recovery model in GRO is very different, so I'm likely taking down guys already injured in some small way.
Since regeneration stops whenever you engage in combat (ie you are shot or you fire your weapon, you stop healing) and is really really slow, fights can't really take into account the balance of only killing max health enemies.

A shotgunner is going to be taking hits in the thick of it, automatic weapons kill very fast. It needs the level of lethality it has to match up against other weapons, or else it'll become just another blunderbuss piece of crap like shotguns in most other games.

Haven't played MW3 but it looks very much like BF3's model. I think BF3 has "a cone within a cone" (insert overdone inception/xzibit reference here) too but it's hardly noticable there with the pellet spread itself is pretty wide for all shotguns that aren't the 870

Looks like the shotgun model all games should use. High risk, highly situatinal but highly rewarding if done right.

Are they still giving out keys? I signed up for one a week ago but haven't received anything yet and that shotguntalk is getting me hyped..

Not in Den's league but I am especially enjoying the 2 Moscow "Capture" maps. Just finished a very close fought game. :)

How anyone can possibly hate shotguns, call them overpowered, preposterous.
I picked up an LMG and I'm going 5:1 or better every round. Shotguns aren't even close to the same league as any of the other weapon types.

I think afte... OHWHATTHE

You bros seem to be having a lot of fun with this game! ;D

I'd love to play with you, but I'm still apprehensive about applying for a key. I don't think I've played a 3rd person shooter that I actually liked and the whole idea of it just seems weird (to me anyway). Going from 3rd to 1st person when aiming down the sights all the time seems very cumbersome. I don't want to take a key away from someone else who might certainly enjoy the game unless I'm sure I'll like it.

Go for it anyway :) If the developers want more people in the test, they'll just issue more keys; doesn't cost them anything.

I didn't think that I would enjoy the 3rd person aspect of it as much as I do; enables you to peep around corners and just generally gives you a bit more peripheral vision. The transition to ADS first person is fairly smooth, but takes a little getting used to especially if you are "peeping" as above.

Another night done.
Three more levels to go until I secure a Gold P250.

I haven't played this ferociously since Soldier of Fortune II.

One thing I'm liking about this game are the detailed stats that are displayed for the weapons and various attachment options. Nice.

Wonder whether they are actually accurate?

Damage and Rate of Fire seem accurate enough, since it seems they are only dealing with one value.

Point blank damage.
Rounds per minute.

However Accuracy and Recoil are way more than one value.
The numbers represented probably don't show the whole.

For example the differences between the Bipod and Grip. The Grip seems like it lowers recoil slightly in all positions, while the Bipod drastically improves recoil when prone or when on Cover (on top of the recoil improvement from cover already).

Accuracy may be a simple all-encompassing value that affects all other numbers. The 88 accuracy on some LMGs give it a slightly inaccurate spread even on the first shot when sighted while the 103 accuracy on the MK17 make it pinpoint accurate on the first shot. And of course the 50-ish accuracy on shotguns doesn't change regardless of posture.

Handling may or may not be any more than the time it takes to ready the weapon when getting up from cover or having the weapon lowered when facing a wall. It likely also has an effect on the speed at which a weapon's Critical Rate and accuracy recovers.

Also, some have reported that the value changes with some attachments regarding recoil don't seem accurate. One guy said that a weapon with some attachments kicked far harder despite having a better, lower recoil value than another setup.

I want to use the shotgun, but the LMG is much more suitable for me.
Despite the crazy recoil, I feel like I can control it perfectly.

I guess I'll stay at the #2 spot while Superhero zooms ahead of everyone else in shotgun kills and I will slowly fade from the top of that list.

Something about this game. Really stressful, puts me on edge.

Use SMG or shotguns. Recon SMG in particular is very newb friendly.

Not sure how many they have but I'd jump on it quick if you're interested.

Starting this Friday, GRO is going Open Beta.
VIPs with silver and Gold Pee-Two-Fiddys get to play early.

I think they've settled on an acceptable compromise for shotgun power.
Though considering we've all been tossed back to Level 1, it remains to be seen how shotguns fare once we all get back to Level 20+ with decked out armor plates.

I'll probably go back to LMGs anyway.
