What headset to buy, Bros? « Thread Started on Oct 26, 2011, 5:22pm »
For PS3.
Looked at the official Sony Wireless Stereo Headset—it got good reviews, is wireless, easy to set up, and people seem to really like it. However, I'm concerned that it can't output to both the headset and TV simultaneously, which prevents me from using it while playing split screen. I also heard it doesn't have voice monitoring, and this is weird when you factor in the noise cancellation.
Considering some relatively cheap PX21's, but I've heard they like to break pretty easily. Also looked at Tritton (like the Black Ops headset, with multiple speakers in each ear), but it's probably a little out of my current price range.
Main considerations are sound quality (but I'm not a big audiophile, so doesn't need to be that good), directional recognition, durability, and being able to use it in split screen. Never used a headset before for gaming (just a crappy bluetooth mic for chat), so I don't know where to go.
Let me know what all you bros use, and what you'd recommend. Thanks.

I have Turtle Beach X11's for my Xbox. They're good and reasonably priced. The Playstation equivalent is probably just as good. Oh wait, those are the PX21's and you don't want those.
I regret not going wireless though, way too many Foxtrotting cords with the wired.
If you just want to sound whore, really any set of stereo headphones will work decently

Astro A40s
I've had them for two years and they work just as well now as when I got them. I previously had a turtle beach set but there was way too much bass which is exactly what you don't want when your trying to sound whore.
They just recently went wireless but I think I'm going to stick with the cords because that's 1 less thing to worry about charging.

Might just break down and get the PX5's. I'd rather not spend that much, but sometimes you can't skimp on quality.
Didn't say that I wouldn't consider the PX21's, I just wanted some insight from people on here who have actually used them. Everything I'm learning so far is based on Amazon reviews.
Astros aren't available on Amazon for some reason, and they retail for $250 with the MixAmp. At least with the PX5's, Amazon cuts the price to $212, and I get free shipping with prime.
I wish Sony would release a firmware update to allow multi-output to USB + HDMI. I'd snatch up their $90 pair right away.
Thanks, bros.

Astro A40's. You get a one year warranty if anything goes wrong, free repair and shipping both ways. Comfortable, great build quality, Great microphone, superior sound quality, excellent footstep locator. 2 Years no problems or breaks. Worth the $250. Having the MixAmp is great because there's many options in hooking it up. Also works great if your computer has a mini TOSlink optical out port.

The turtle beach PX-21's have fine sound quality but they are not built right. If you do get them, get the "newer" model that comes in a box, not the old ones that come in a plastic case. The internal wiring on the old ones are terrible and they are likely going to break before 30 days.

My favorite headset setup are my AKG K701s and the Astro Mixamp. You could get some less expensive headphones if you wanted, like the Audio Technica a700's, too.
i've thought about a headset for ps3, but normal headphones i can't plug in anywhere...
have to be bluetooth or usb?
what would you get if money was no object?
If money was no object then you could get a good quality headphone amp, connect this to the PS3 with an optical cable and then put a set of top class headphones in there.
You can get something like a Little Dot headphone amp for about £100-150 and a pair of good heaphones for something similar (like my Sennheiser HD600's for example), so for a similar price to what you'd pay for the Astro 440's and mixamp, you get a setup that's not only great for gaming, but will absolutely trash the Astro's for high quality music reproduction.
Having compared similar setups, I can say that I personally would take the hi-fi solution over the headset approach every single time.
If you truly wanted to go silly and money was genuinely no object then you could try to get hold of a Sennheiser Oprheus set (AFAIK only 300 were made).
Astro A40s I previously had a turtle beach set but there was way too much bass which is exactly what you don't want when your trying to sound whore.
Actually, that's the problem I have with the 2011 A40's. I had the X41's which were great, as they had the bass boost option. The 2011 Astro's however have "Improved Bass" from previous iterations - which was actually terrible for the sole reason I bought them. Since they lack the ability to tone down the bass, I've been rather disappointed by the purchase. They sound great, but there are muuuuch better headsets for sound whoring, like any Turtle Beach headset :/.
Oh, and hi.

For xbox, you need a mic too - while I agree that music headphones are better, playing without a mic is not an option for me.
I don't know about the Tritton Pro hate - they work well for me. the 5.1 works OK, not as well as a speaker setup, and they have a mic. Bass is ridiculous and I've had to turn it down.
I have to play late at night, in a family home, and it's the best option, for me, there is.

If you want something cheap (price-wise not quality-wise) I suggest the Creative Fatal1ty. I've had them for almost 2 years and they're just as good as the day I bought them. They're only $40, (the price may have gone down this was the price nearly2 years ago) the sound quality is awesome, and they don't have surround but they sure seem like it. The mic quality is fantastic, not once has another player told me to take the mic out of my ass. The mic is also detachable which is pretty nifty in case you don't feel like using it or you're just listening to music, but this can a bad thing as you might lose it, but I doubt it because it's big. The mic boom is flexible, you can bend it into any shape and it will stay that way, with no loss in mic quality even after heavy use for nearly 2 years and still going strong. They're pretty comfy, and have big soft pads for your ears and the top of your head, that said they're kinda bulky. They fit very well, and I have a huge head. The only problems you might have is that it's not wireless, it has a standard 3.5mm jack for the audio and the mic so you'd have to plug it directly into your TV, but the cord is super long. TL;DR Pros: -Super duper cheap -Durable as Foxtrot, like GameCube durable -Really long cord -Very high quality sound and mic (for the price) -Detachable mic -Flexible mic boom -Comfortable and fits well
Cons: -Detachable mic (possibly lose it) -Not wireless -Somewhat bulky -No Surround Sound (but does an excellent job emulating it) -Definitely not as good as $200+ Trittons/Astros/Turtle Beaches if you can afford them
Even my TL;DR is too long LOL. BOTTOM LINE: buy these if you're on a budget, but if you've got the cash, get the super expensive pimped out headsets.

Tritton AX Pro.
Other suggestions on this page seem to "kinda get it done" for the author.
My AX Pro's do Exactly what I want them to do. Which is:
Allow me to PinPoint an enemy without seeing him. I can hear some one behind me, turn to the exact location of the sound and it is spot on. Every time.
If someone is walking behind a close wall, not crouching or using Dead Silence, I can follow his footsteps to a doorway. The moment the sound indicates that he should be walking through that door, POOF, there he is. Every time.
The Ax Pro's have Actual surround sound. Not virtual.
5.1 surround = 5 speakers, 1 center front, 2 side front corners and 2 side back corners.
In the Ax Pro's each ear cup has four speakers in it. One for the Center front, one for the Side front, one for the Side back and one for the chat. Actual surround sound.
A friend of mine has Turtle Beach x41's which simulate surround sound. I'll be honest, they sound amazing as well. But they simulate surround with two speakers. Even if they do just about the same job that the Ax Pro's do, virtual surround will Never sound better than actual.
If you had the choice between going on a date with a beautiful virtual girl or a beautiful actual one, with no catches.....

I could try to explain why many of the suggestions just aren't that great, but chances are many would just think I was a troll...
So, just because I know many people are likely to value the opinion of 'pro' players, or those who frequent the heady halls of MLG, here's a link to some headset/headphone reviews done over there - the results of which I pretty much agree with in 9 out of 10 cases.
There are numerous reviews on that thread about anything from the turtle beach HPX, to the Astro A40's to the Sennheiser HD650 (almost the same as what I use but I have the HD600 because I prefer the sound). I'll let you draw your own conclusions from this.

Astro A40's suck. I got the 2011 Astro A40's and all I can say is that my $84 Audio Techinca's where twice as good. The A40's sound is just compressed anything but crisp. Astro must of paid off MLG to endorse them because they're just horrible. The Astro Mixamp however is anther story.
Thats what i do. I use the Sennheiser 598's + Astro Mixamp.
Not a bad little combination, there's not much between the 598's and my 600's, although mine tend to be more demanding from an amp perspective but I think they sound better for it - not a lot, but enough for me.
What the mixamp does offer over my current setup is portability, as I use my Linn integrated amp to drive the headphones and unfortunately uncabling everything and boxing securely for transit is not exactly convenient.
Again though, it's all about sound reproduction for me, and I don't think the mixamp sounds that great in general, although it can be strongly argued that you don't need crystal clear pitch perfect sound for COD...

There are plenty of options, but here's a couple to consider that I know friends have been very happy with and have been well received in gaming circles in general.
Apols for using Amazon for everything, just makes it easier tbh.
If you want to spend more, then there are more 'professional' level options out there, but I just can't recommend them in most cases as people really won't hear a real difference tbh.

gosh darn golly gee whiz.
My Tritton AX Pro in line volume adjuster's gone pop. 10 months old.
No issue with warranty or refund but the store I bought them from has no stock and will probably offer a refund.
So - I need something new. I do own nice Music headphones (Allesandro MS1's which are equatable to Grado SR125i) so I could spend the money on an Astro AMP only and use the headphones and amp together. But.
How do I solve the voice chat? Am I being stupid? I could get the throat mic above but I don't want the ear piece do I? Can I adjust the xbox or something? Sorry for being new year stupid.

Yeah, I just want to chime in here and ask about PS3 headsets too. I'm an audio-newbie, so I have no idea what all the talk about mixamps is about or how to use one.
So basically, here's my shopping list: -PS3 compatible -Easy to use/configure (audio-newbie here) or at least easy to learn about -Has microphone and can pick up softer speech without picking up every breath too (I usually play at night, and a light sleeper is nearby) -Corded or wireless, doesn't matter as long as it works with PS3 -Also compatible with PC is a plus -3-4 hour comfort is a plus -I have narcolepsy, so if they can stay put on your head while you're looking at the floor and/or are sturdy enough to survive falling off one's head onto a desk is a definite plus -Soft cap of $100, hard cap of $130 on price, all said and done - willing to shop around a bit for best price, of course
EDIT: -Forgot to mention, big on soundwhoring, so headphones that are good at pinpointing direction are desired as well
Any suggestions and/or information (like about the whole mixamp thing) would be most certainly appreciated

I suppose you want a BJ with that as well????
At that price range you can't get anything that will satisfy all requirements whilst being of good build and sound quality at the same time, sorry but you don't get Diamonds for the price of Coal...
That being said, there are 'decent' options out there for the cash that many players will be perfectly happy with, e.g. a friend on mine has a set of Turtle Beach PX21's and he's really pleased with them - I think they sound terrible and are very cheaply made, but it's going to be your ears and basically your opinion that decides who you agree with.
