the addition of face off has finally made the game and elite worth it. the maps are stupendous.
face off would have been sooooo different before the sit rep/dead silence update. kind of boring right now because almost no one in the general cod population seems to realize that dead silence is useless now. gets old destroying noobs going 100 and 1 every match.

But in a 1v1, if you have SRP and he has DS, isn't it like neither of you have third perks?

If both running, DS has the clear advantage as it can't hear their own footsteps. But SR also has its original perk. If they're both crouch walking, then SR has the advantage.

If that is the case, it's close enough if you have decent sound. Hearing non-DS users without me using SitRep is easy with my TB X11 headset, and in a 1v1, you only have one set of footsteps to listen for. I guess you still have to watch your own footsteps, though.

@IW i just dashboard if i dont get 100 kills or if i die more than once.
for sure mega. those matches are the best! seriously having so much fun in face off when paired with fun teams.
also, i never abuse sit rep against newer/super low rank players or those that clearly dont realize what they're up against. ill just riggity rock dead silence or steady aim. honestly, ive even been sending pms to people when i hear them getting upset yelling 'how did he know where i was?! i had dead silence and assassin!" etc. i just send them a pm saying 'sit rep pro can now hear dead silence'. i can be really altruistic once the weed infused sour patch kids kick in.

My experience in face off so is that matches go one of three ways, and I can usually tell within the first minute which it will be. (Only played 1v1 so far)
1. My opponent isn't using Assassin+Dead Silence, and doesn't change classes. This is a total blowout. I've died literally once to such an opponent so far. HBS+Sitrep Pro awwwwwwwwl day. ~60% of games
2 Opponent isn't using Assassin+Dead Silence, but realizes their error and changes classes. Depending on how long it takes them, these are sometimes competitive. ~20% of games
3. Opponent begins the game with Assassin+Dead Silence, and usually refuses to be goaded into running around. These are pretty close, and usually go to the time limit or close to it. ~20% of games
Overall I must say I really like the new maps in general. I'm not even the world's biggest Dom fan (though I play it reasonably often), but Dom on Oasis is fun as Foxtrot. All of the face-off maps seem really good to me. I'm probably more pleased with this update than any so far.

When will Face Off be released to all us plebians that did not buy Elite?
For XBL, now. The playlists can be found in the "Community Playlists" section.
For PS3, I believe it will be around 06/15 but I could be wrong because there is no reason to prevent them from doing it earlier. Their agreement with Microsoft should not be a problem as they can just claim that this is no different from Drop Zone, Infected and Gun Game.

I haven't played Face Off yet. I suspect that I would not play it much though unless I have a buddy to play 2v2 together. I also remain quite skeptical about the 1v1 idea. Unless I have the urge to settle a personal grudge with somebody, I don't feel that it would be fun to play against the same player over and over again, either crush him or get crushed by him repeatedly. I would much rather play FFA.
It does seem to me that the reception from player community is pretty good. Yesterday I can see that 2v2 has a decent player turn out: only significantly less than KC/TDM/SnD. On par with GW/FFA/Dem and significantly better than the rest. And this is only limited to the players with Premium. Now it has become available to the general public, the number should grow much higher.
Below are my concerns regarding Face Off that I posted in another thread:
My main concern with Face Off is how they plan to keep players' interest after the novelty has worn off. IMHO they'll need to add more maps and that raises the following questions:
1) How would they manage the development for "regular" maps vs Face Off maps? For players who don't plan to play Face Off this is bad news because it would mean less resources spent on regular maps. 2) Would all of them require purchase? If yes, then there will be only 2 free maps so the player population will shrink quickly. If no, they will have to spend resources to add more free Face Off maps. 3) Would they consider making some maps (either existing or new) available for both? At this point it does not look practical as I don't see a way of making a map that can be good for both 2v2 and 6v6 or higher. 4) What would be practical map design wise is to open up the regular maps for multiple double teams to go against each other, i.e.: 4 to 6 2-person teams go against each other in a FFA manner (In Halo the playlist is called "multi-team"). However, that's probably too much of a change from game play point of view.
My guess is that they'll wait and see how popular the Face Off can become before making decisions on these.

In my experience people don't tend to stay in the lobby, whatever the outcome. The only real gripe I've had is getting put in games already in progress. I think it's entirely feasible to just end the game if a player quits, rather than throw someone else in for this playlist.

I didn't enjoy my first foray into faceoff (2v2 version). It was far too campy and slow paced. I'm a little ADD, no attention span, rush rush rush. I was hoping for frantic chaos. This was definitely not the case. Lots of tactical loitering and sneaking. Not for me.

I was on (XBL) last night and it wasn't on there. The little scrolling ad at the bottom said "Elite Premium? Face Off Playlists and New Content Drop Available Now", so I figured it's still premium only. Unless today was the day for release to everyone?

Yes. Yesterday was for Elite only, today is for the general public.
They made 4 maps for Face Off so far. 2 of them are free, while the other 2 are only available to Elite Premium, or to be purchased as part of collection #2 released on 05/22.
Neither 2 nor 4 maps would be enough to keep this "game style" alive for very long. To keep it going they'll need to add new maps. It remains to be seen whether they plan to release any more free maps, or Elite only from this point on.

I like the 4 new maps especially Getaway and Erosion so far. I haven't played "Oasis" yet, too busy throwing down in 2v2. It's a nice change of pace from all the other game modes. There's a lot of tactical play, sneaking around, checking corners. But still very fast paced, with lots of surprising Assassin+Dead Silence flanking and such going on.
I've played maybe 40-50 games in 2v2 over the past couple days and my take on it is that it's a great environment for fun competitive play. What I mean is it's kind of intimate (for lack of a better word) at the end of the game people are usually respectful; saying good game well played etc. Similar to Zombies mode on Black Ops. People are generally friendlier in my experience when there's only about 4 people in the lobby for some reason.
You have to be on your A game. There's plenty of cover, corners, head-spots, and counter-head-spots. Nearly everyone uses Assassin+DS, and powerful guns like ACR, MP7, PP90m1. People don't mess around too much in 2v2. If you can keep up it's really engaging and a lot of fun. Almost everytime someone gets killed you hear them yell out OH SH*T! Everyone tries, it's great competition.
I'm really hoping that they start coming out with new Face Off maps every month or every other month. The first 4 are great but it's just not enough to keep such a great playlist alive for long.

@malgato: I am curious about how you played you Face Off 2v2 games:
1) Are you playing with random or with a buddy? 2) When rushing, are you rolling with Assassin+DS?
Due to the small map size, I can totally imagine that a rusher will have very hard time running around without both Assassin & DS, and/or play alone against 2 enemies who communicate. This is because the easiest way I can imagine myself play is to be a bit campy with the help of PR+SitRep, maybe HBS. If the enemy does not have ASS+DS, this would be like having eyes everywhere.
If on the other hand everybody is gravitating towards ASS+DS, I can see being campy is not such an idea. Small map size also means easy revenge kill through flanking.
Since Face Off came out I have not been able to find time to play much MW3 yet. Should have some time tomorrow evening and plan to try out 2v2. Based on what I read so far in this thread, looks like it would be fun to play, but requires some tailoring to both loadouts and play style to be effective.
Even more intriguing: when 2 good pairs go against each other it can create interest matches with intensive mid-game loadout adjustments to counter each other (and for teammates to complement with each other).
If you are interested and have time, maybe we can try to pair up.

Witty, regarding your post.
I've played a bunch of games now, just recently played one before work this morning lol (snuck it in!!!). Here are some thoughts, a bit more detailed than what i posted above.
1. One's playing experience with 2 v 2 can be very uneven. When it works, it's awesome. But when it doesn't ...it can be annoying.
2. Focusing on the negative first....one, the dashing rate is higher (based on a limited sample size i've seen). Two, if you play with a randoms, watch out. You can hide a bad random or two in a group (6 v 6, 9 v 9)...but with 2 v 2? You are screwed. Get a bad buddy, your experience could be lame. Three, regardless of whether your opponents are good or bad, ...expect tactical loitering and hiding.
3. More on the last part. Lots of tactical loitering. A lot of people sort of pictured these games as this run & gun, happy free for all shoot-fest. Uhhh.....t's not. It won't be. The maps are new. People hide on new maps. Two, what people immediately also find is ....quietness. Usually in bigger team games, you can always count on some opponents to be firing, to give at least a general idea, of what part of the map they are in. Here? With two opponents, and tactical loitering...there will be 30 second stretches were there is nothing. No sight of them. No radar on them. Nothing. This is disconcerting to many people...and makes the tactical loitering happen even more. People hunker down. This can make the game crawl to a snail's pace.
3a. Yes, the maps are small...but....two people can hide ANYWHERE on a small map.
4. Now...that all said, the good stuff. When the game works...it's really fun. The game i played this morning, with a random. He had a mic. We talked. Awesome time. I went 18-10, he went 10-11, and we won (clock ran out).
5. I ran with the AK47 (kick and silencer), ScavP, AssP, DeadSilP. My killstreaks were set to high, forget to change them ..I goofted up there. One should run UAV and low streaks. Using this morning as an example of a good game.....both players need to be visual and look around. Talk. You have to assume everyone is going to run UAV, Silencer and AssassinP....so things are negated, and the quiet patches are inevitable. Basically, imho...it's a game of .....
...."who sees who first"
That's all it really is. So both teammates have to look around, spot the opponent, call out the area (need to have your map lingo down)...and then stalk if you can't shoot. Hunt them like prey!!! The game this morning...the opponents were two clan guys (lv 23, pretty high)...and they were doing a riot shield/sniper combo...riot shield distract, their sniper shoots. Uhhh...I didn't think that's particularily effective, but they tried.
6. Again...communication wins games. If you die, you need to call out where that opponent was. It's definitely not good to run together, close to each other. To much risk at giving the opponents a two kill.
7. There is potential for tons of strategy here. Circle the map, 30 meters apart? One person locks down a side, while the other circles? Both guys flank the sides? Control the middle? Lots of options, but at a min,...if you want to win, i think you have to have AssassinPr, as well as Silencer. Anything less and you are giving away points.
Re: Face Off: Your Opinion « Reply #27 on May 17, 2012, 11:31am »
Played it last night and liked it. Played with randoms but we won all the games and tied one (where my teammates constantly quit on me.) Some intense matches, and the 2v2 definitely has that "hunting your prey" feeling which is awesome. I like the fact that you can really control the match.
It really reminds me of old Doom days, where it was 4 players max. The typical FPS experience now is large, crazy games with tons of action and killing. This is more old school and, I think (if you are playing someone good) tactical, since you've really got to hunt down your enemy and play smart if they are playing smart, since you cannot really rely on your teammates.

I've only played TDM so far, the games I have played. I have yet to get a Domination one. I'm still reserving judgement on that one. Not sure how that's going to work. I would have to think it will open things up quite a bit, in terms of movement, hiding, tactical loitering, etc...If you are down, two flags to one....it's only going to be one or two guys guarding a flag.
Re: Face Off: Your Opinion « Reply #29 on May 17, 2012, 12:33pm »
I only played KC and TDM myself. I got tired of playing the same maps so I only played about 4 or 5 matches, and I kept being shuffled around to new lobbies.
