Blops 'Kowloon' always reminded me of MW2's 'Favella'. Both were pretty vertical.
I loved both maps. I know some people hated them. But game play on both always seemed to be a bit more on the frantic, high paced side.. so that was good. Both maps got a thumbs up from me.
Favella never ceased to amaze me on Dom. Even in the late stages of the game (Oct of 2011), people STILL hadn't figured on Dom that the B flag could be capped sitting on top of the garbage can in the building next to the flag. So many games, where guys would be spraying the B area...looking for a kill, and i could cap the flag. The opposite is true too....always a blast shooting through the wall to nail people trying to cap!!

Favela is one of my favorite maps from MW2, I loved the verticality; and all the walls to penetrate
...I'm much more aware of "low FPS" in MW3, than in BOps/MW2. Any time there's lots of smoke from gunfire + smoke from explosions, I see the frames drop around ~25 at times; it's really bad for gameplay.

What they really need to do, is bring in Halo's map editor mode. And then let people make their own maps for private matches. THIS is where CoD needs to go, the next step. I'm kind of disappointed Blops2 didn't go this route.
With that, I wasn't a huge fan of Halo Reach, but their 'plug & drop' editor was freaking amazing for a console. One could really make some great maps. No reason CoD couldn't do the same. Give us a menu of 'stuff' to plug in, rocks, buildings, exploding cars, obstacles....and let our imagination do the rest.

Oh god I love forge
I've spent more time in halo forge than playing the actual game. On top of that, so many gametypes from other games can be converted to work for halo, particularly with CoD's SnD
I would love it in CoD, it would be a huge step up.

LOL...same deal with me. More time in Forge, than the actual game. I loved creating maps. The only problem was, I never really had anyone to go in them, and play them. After a while, it kind of sucked making maps no one would try. And toot my own horn, i had some awesome maps made.

The other thing forge did was allow different communities within the game to segregate themselves, to their mutual benefit. Competitive people make competitive maps to play competitive games on, silly people can make silly maps to be silly on, etc. Sometimes it's the same people, sometimes it isn't, but giving them the freedom to play how they want to play without the developers picking sides was pretty cool.

We sometimes do the private match thing on CoD. Have done it with both Blops and MW3.
In Blops, i set up these high speed games, with limited gun sets and other quirky rules (only smoke, carepackages, sentry guns, etc..), then played Nuketown with a ton of people. It was always a blast.
Same deal with MW3. Set up a small map like Uturn, give everyone only one gun like the L118, and get some fun FFA games going. It's a good time. A real nice change of pace. Everyone just has fun, no stress about dying, etc...Just play for fun.
Rather than pushing the Esports thing so hard....i really felt Blops2 could have carried their pick 10, 'play how you want to play' battle cry in another direction too....one towards open maps, create your own gametypes, map editors and all that stuff. That would have fit in too with what they are doing now.
Black Ops 2 may have dropped CoD Points and gambling-based Wager Matches as a result, but Treyarch will still have equivalent "oddball" game modes in the future-set shooter, Treyarch Game Design Director David Vonderhaar has confirmed to NowGamer.
"In Black Ops they were called Wager Matches, and there was the 'gambling' component. But those somewhat oddball, out-of-context, just kind of fun game modes are actually going to make a fairly significant return in Black Ops 2, as what we call Party Games," Vonderhaar revealed.
Party Games aren't part of the official gamescom reveal, because Treyarch "just couldn't possibly get through everything," as well as the substantial first reveal of multiplayer Vonderhaar explained.
"Party games is how we think about that - we think about them as you and I just goofing off, having some fun in this arguably slightly silly game mode. We love making those game modes, and they'll be a part of this game too. They just don't have the mechanic of gambling in them in that way, because there are no CoD points."

BLOPS 1 private matches could be really fun. You could pretty much make a TF2 SnD game... with like the only class missing being medic. I mean you had speed/weight/perk tweaks,,,and of course endurance tweaks.
Gun Game should pick entirely random guns for each tier, every time.
Sharpshooter was funny because of all the nonsensical guns (ex. Uzi ACOG, Death Machines, etc.) that would come up.
Yeah, but for some reason Sharpshooter loved throwing naked guns and dual wield SMGs and pistols in there all the freakin time. Still a fun game mode though.

what about a cliffside / mountainside?
a very long beach map with that includes the shore, the boardwalk, those boardwalk rollercoaster parks, some multi-story shore houses, and maybe some docks. that would be great for ctf.
a cave map? like vietnam with a few above ground aspects but mostly a cave system.
.......... shipment. but with a smaller boat and with more boats. ziplines / cat walks to other ships. one could be the main boat, like maybe a carrier ship, then there would be other smaller vessels and even a submarine.

I believe the reason you don't see maps like the ones the OP suggested is less about hardware, controls, or learning curve and more about how they typically base the MP maps upon the SP campaign. That's why you don't see a city map like Venice with lava instead of water (that city would never be built), or a floating iceberg with an alien spaceship or a bounce castle with walls that spray acid (which would require some questionable plot twists).

Correct me if i am wrong, but didn't Blops do their MP maps first, and then sort of work their campaign around them?
They already did a map on a cliffside. It was called "Cliffside".
oh. quite sensible name.
was this one of the older cods, like before mw2?
World at War. It was re-imagined as a golf course for the Black Ops DLC map Hazard, but was made much larger, turning it into a disgusting snipefest. The WaW map was actually very fun.

it was in WaW. Then Treyarch reskinned the map, made a new version of it that was a Golf Course, called it 'Hazard' on Blops. This was a pretty fun map. Tactically, loads of fun with Domination. Some extremely long sightlines, some of the longest in CoD history maybe.
Edit...hawkney beat me to it...but i don't think the map was disgusting. It was a lot of fun with Dom.

I played Dom almost exclusively, and I hated it, because I always played with randoms, and it's no fun getting sniped over and over trying to take B. On Cliffside, there's at least some cover around B, but on Hazard you're a sitting duck. I also hate sniping and anybody that snipes. It was at the very least extremely pretty.
Also...I'm the Hawk, and I'm from New York. Not Hawkny, Hawk NY.

I believe you are incorrect: I distinctly recall a developer commenting on how Havana was originally a snow map, but it changed as the single player settings were developed more.
