You are my bro, bro.
Hey Den,
I've been experimenting with different values for cg_fov in CoD4, and it seems to me that the melee charge will lock on much easier with a wider field of view. Is this true?
On your CoD4 page you mention that a stab will register if the enemy is within the center half of the screen. Is this 'half of the screen' always the same or is it dependant on the fov (i.e. the area of the screen that the knife will hit becomes smaller with a higher fov)?

That's exactly right. The "aim_automelee" (as seen in the image with debug mode on) is based coordinates of the screen rather than a space in the game world. Because of that, a wider field of view than the default 65° will lead to having more in that area. If any part of an enemy soldier is within that green box, the player will turn to melee lunge. The green box stays the same size in reference to the screen itself and does not scale to the field of view.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'll switch to 80 degrees then because I knife a lot.

How is this relative to resolution. For example, I play on 1280x720 on a 1920x1080 screen with 80 FOV. How does this work out? What if I was playing on a non widescreen resolution?

Resolution has no effect, though the Ratio... It's virtual coordinates in 640x480 units across the screen based on whatever the cg_FOV is. The AutoMelee area is 320x240 of that space. Since the coordinates are a 4:3 ratio and these screenshots are in 16:10, the far edges of the screen aren't in the AutoMelee range, even when I change the Width to the maximum 640. If I changed to a 4:3 ratio, the green box would extend all the way to the sides. But then the aspect ratio does not change the space that is covered in the area (4:3 cuts off that part of the horizontal field of view that can be seen in 16:10 or 16:9). Also, zooming in will not affect the area covered; the box will expand to stay equal to the hip's Field of View.

I'm a little confused as to why the aim_automelee green box is bigger in the second 80 degree shot than it is in the first one above. The FoV is the same and the aspect ratio appears to be identical.
Also is it the same in MW2?
I would really like a visual reference so I know how far off center I can be, although I play on xbox rather than PC.

The second image is the width increased to 640 from the 320 default. The AutoMelee area is the same in MW2.

In my experience, have a wider FOV isn't necessarily a good thing. I've missed more knife lock-ons in 80 fov than 65 fov.
