You can't hear the other team anyway. Weird enough, my own teammates make a clunk clunk clunk noise, really loud

So your character won't shout out horrible one liners after every kill.

I'm going into combat training to play with Awareness to see if it even does anything

Yeah the enemies' footsteps literally make zero sound. This game kind of sucks.

Well that sucks. In CoD4 I could sound-whore without a headset, or surround sound assuming I had dead silence. None of that in this game I guess.

Are reloads and weapon switches loud or can you barely hear them do anything?

this is bullshit. i am a prestiger and all i can say is that awareness is good only if no sound from bullets etc is made. so you can use it only in search and destroy.in every other game is useless. also it is nothing like sit rep pro in mw3. its shit. i unlocked claymores after i prestiged thought before the game i wanted to unlock awareness. dead silence is useless

I'll be using Dead Silence just to counter Awareness campers. I'm fine with that. Footsteps are fookin stoopid. They never should have been such a big element of CoD gameplay.

Truth be told, I think Awareness is a little too nerfed now.
I was using awareness in combat training and parking myself in high traffic areas. And I was still surprised that bots would come RIGHT UP ON ME without me having any idea that they were there. I feel like the footsteps in MW3 without any perk at all are still louder than what the enemy in BOII sounds like with awareness.
I actually like the idea that SOME degree of situational awareness should be rewarded. Either that, or when you run the perk, you get full awareness of an enemy's footsteps if you're crouched or motionless. That way, the soundwhoring is countered not just by crouch-walking or dead silence, but by the MMS sight, too.
As for the "sound isn't just footsteps" angle that Vahn's brought up, I don't think it's anywhere near as helpful as he thinks it is. There might be a few callouts here and there that might give away a position, but it's not enough to justify a perk slot. An isolated sound isn't enough to let you try and triangulate position or basic movement direction. And as for gunfire, unless Awareness muted every gunshot that came from your team (which would be weird, but useful), the rapport of the enemy team is going to be mixed in there with your own dudes rounding off.
If the days of easy soundwhoring are over, that's fine: everyone's on equal footing. However, if that's the case, we've got two useless perks lying around.

I like that Dead Silence and Awareness are broken because I don't have to worry about giving up Engineer.
Just like how Ninja was broken in Black Ops--it made using Hacker a no-brainer.

I guess we've either got a difference of opinion, Mousey, or it really does become heavily dependent on the surface the other guy is walking on. Because even straining to pick up any noise with the perk and over a set of headphones, I had a really hard time with it. It's not like I was trying to play BOII and listen to Metallica at the same time, for christ's sake.
If it is surface-based, then the lesson behind Awareness would seem to be "stick to patrolling louder areas filled with crunchy leaves, broken glass, and that bubble wrap that pops when you apply pressure to it" or "Awareness only works the way you want it to some of the time."

I actually don't have too much a problem with sound in this game. If they are in range to surprise me, I am in range to hear them, turn, and kill them.
I can't wait to permanently unlock awareness.

I'll try it again, I suppose, but these early efforts to utilize the perk well have not been encouraging. :/

That said, my one and only distinct phsyical advantage is my above average hearing ability. Many of my friends have far better headsets than I, and they constantly complain that I can hear people they can't (Blops,MW3, and Blops2).
It's the price to pay for sucky sucky eyes.

I'm really surprised by how many of you don't think that the sound in this game is broken. It's not just that the footsteps are completely silent... even when enemies are jumping off of buildings right behind you they make no sound at all. The sound of enemies' guns is also broken. People will be shooting at me from 5 feet away with no silencer on and yet it sounds like they're across the map. They really need to fix this shit, I'm not playing multiplayer until they do.

I like the new quieter footsteps, if only because it opens up more interesting options in the 3rd perk slot for SnD. I always suggested in previous COD titles that they make an option in private matches to turn footsteps on or off so that way we might see some variety in the third perk slot rather than necessitating that the user use DS.
Most people who are complaining are just mad that they no longer abuse new/bad players. They act as though it took some tremendous amount of skill to soundwhore (there is, perhaps, a small amount of skill in soundwhoring). God forbid that now they actually have to be aware of their surroundings.
What exactly is the argument for the loud footsteps beyond being able to distinguish noob players from moderately competent ones anyway?

Marvel was testing guns and I joined him, crouchwalked up near him, then sprayed into the air around him. He said he heard me coming but I scared the piss out of him. That being said, ill say this again: HEAVEN FORBID PLAYERS NEED TO BE AWARE OF THEIR SURROUNDINGS WITHOUT IT BLARING IN THEIR EARS I dont really understand what you mean. Sound doesnt need to be super loud like MW3, but there is a need for sound to be useful. It's impossible to be aware of much without sound. You could look behind you every 3 seconds and still get flanked repeatedly. Its a past paced game.

Being a soundwhore since MW2, I was very much anticipating Awareness and planning to unlock it permanently after prestiging. After grinding through 50 levels, truth be told it is the most useless perk in the game. Amplification and range of enemy movements are simply abysmal compared to previous Call of Duty iterations. None of your own footfalls are lessened, meaning using it in an aggressive manner is completely out of the question. None of your teammates footfalls are lessened either, meaning you're just as likely to mix in teammates movements with the enemies when moving with the team. On maps with high engagement areas, or just plenty of gunfire overall (which is about 99% of maps and modes, save SnD), you will not hear anything at all. Going Perk 3 Greed with Dead Silence appears mandatory to circumvent the effects of hearing yourself, but even then the perk is nigh-useless when coupled with its other marginal disadvantages. My advise: time to trash the Sennheisers.
