I just noticed that I haven't really seen any discussions or information surrounding on what I think to be the most useful item in the game: The Assault Shield.
Its utility is beyond amazing, and I am going to present an argument for wider use of the equipment, and try to expand upon broader use for it. It can be used as an explosive monster class, a LMG's best friend , or even as an objective capturing king. Regardless of how you choose to use it, if used properly should always result in a positive K/D, and always will be a great teamate to have in objective games. I have an assault shield in almost all of my classes.
First of All, the AS is a must have with Fast Hands in almost any setup. With fast hands and a C4 double pressing your plant button on console games will instantly destroy it. Its good for a free kill almost every time. Fast hands with it also switches out your secondaries almost immediately. Having dual pistols with the AS is a great combo because it creates a some kind of weird psychological effect on opponents when they see the shield that some run away or don't shoot. As soon as they run just whip out the secondaries and it should be another free kill.
If used with Flat jacket and smoke screen you are basically impenetrable when capping flags in Dom. In search you could just plant the bomb face a wall and wait they really can't do much when they see you and even if they do its probably too late as you can C4 them or whip out the secondaries.
Its also a LMGs best friend. As I was saying before just plant the shield down and you have excellent cover. You have to waste a point in overkill for this tactic however, but its clearly worth it.
Finally, there are not many counters to a riot shield user. I would say a good Semtex or RPG user are the only true counter but that's where 1) Flat jacket comes in handy and 2) I rarely see anyone with Semtex or Rpg anymore. And if they do run Semtex/rpg usually they are out of ammo anyways.
Ultimately I am not trying to say to add all of your classes to AS but I do think that you should try it if you don't already. I always thought a master riot shield user is almost impossible to take out. I wanted to discuss any other forms of use of the AS that I haven't thought of or listed and I wanted to share some of the ways that I use it to the community.
I know for a fact that there are some people who do some crazy theroies with the Assault Shield and don't use them. Please Share!
You are my bro, bro.

I had the pleasure of TDMing with a guy who used the assault shield and I stood behind him, strafing side to side and I think I stole 15 of his 20 kills.
He didn't seem to mind as others were doing it and I think he ended up with 25+ assists that game.

Especially good for domination with trophy system and flak jacket.

I used the shield the other day. It was really fun. You can make a nice explosives class using scavenger and fast hands.

Shield is epic win in Domination. I got mine to Gold Camo probably more quickly than most people, and call me crazy, I even had fun doing it. Only problem is that despite dedicated servers, there's still enough lag in the game so people can sprint past me and knife/hip-fire-spray me from the side while they're still in front of me in my screen . Same problem I had in MW2 and MW3... I really hoped it would get better on dedis.

When a defensive shielder is followed by a competent, stealthy gunner....... magic happens ... and when it is done in a pickup game (ie: a TDM where you don't know anyone and just bounce from lobby to lobby) ... it goes from being magic to "super dope $hit that kids in school get holidays at the end of december and and religions are founded of"

It is not a copy-and-paste of the MW2/MW3 riot shield, that is for sure. Or they accidently left out a few lines of code. In particular:
It does not deflect/absorb any explosive damage. Explosives seem to completely ignore it. My instinct when a grenade falls on the ground in front of me is to crouch and point my shield straight at the grenade. I did this all the time in MW2/3 and while I would still take some damage, I would always survive. I could even survive a direct claymore explosion this way.
Also take note that I only play hardcore search and destroy. I would survive these explosions in hardcore.
In BO2, it is as if you have no shield at all when explosions are concerned. The one exception is that the bug still exists where if the front of your shield is stuck by a semtex or crossbow (immediate death upon detonation), if you rub your shield up against a wall you have a chance of surviving (if the semtex fully clips itself into the wall).
Also, it really feels like I get shot through the front of my shield frequently. This is probably just due to the lag issues of it being a new game, but it's really annoying when you play hardcore, have your shield pointed straight at someone, and they shoot one bullet and it kills you. A strafing, hipfiring enemy killing me doesn't bother me, I know my ass sticks out the side of the shield. But the game winning killcams show them aim down sight at the middle of the shield and pop one bullet.

This is probably just due to the lag issues of it being a new game, but it's really annoying when you play Touch Football, have your shield pointed straight at someone, and they shoot one bullet and it kills you. A strafing, hipfiring enemy killing me doesn't bother me, I know my ass sticks out the side of the shield. But the game winning killcams show them aim down sight at the middle of the shield and pop one bullet. At some point during the first week after release, I asked about this in a random public match (I know the credibility of that source to be about as low as it gets, but it can't hurt to try, can it?), and someone replied to me that you can indeed shoot through the windshield part of the Assault Shield. While I don't really think that's true after extensive use of the shield, I get knifed all the time by what looks like stabbed straight through the glass. In reality, though, I'm afraid they have indeed copy-and-pasted the brilliant (<- watch out for sarcasm) design by IW which allows enemies to knife my head when I'm crouching - through the lunge animation, it looks as though they're hitting my Shield, but apparently that's not the case.

The OP mentioned that the assault shield can be planted in the ground for cover. I wanted to mention three things related to this:
1) 3arc made it impossible to plant the shield in places that impede travel. So you can't plant the shield in a narrow hall and block other players from coming down that hall.
2) When the shield is planted it becomes a piece of 'equipment' just like a mine or shock charge. If anyone is running engineer the shield shows up like a Christmas tree on the map. I've played against some snipers that tried to use it - but it essentially just gives away their position before they fire a shot. If someone wanted to have some fun they might try planting it as a decoy since it will draw a crowd - it's so big and obvious.
3) Two knife swipes will destroy the shield when planted. It's pretty durable when it comes to bullets though. You can also stick just about anything too it when planted (C4, shock charges, etc...). But again, I'd only think that would be useful if you were going to use it as a decoy. When you pick up the shield any equipment comes off of it - just in case you had aspirations of walking around with an electrified or explosive assault shield.

I haven't seen it mentioned here yet, but there is a method to bump-cancel (AKA melee-cancel) with the Assault Shield. Perform your first bump, and then if you are in an area where the shield is NOT plantable, press the plant shield button. This will shortcut the recovery animation and allow you to perform a follow up bump more rapidly.

When you pick up the shield any equipment comes off of it - just in case you had aspirations of walking around with an electrified or explosive assault shield. Which is tragic and unfortunate. Plant shield. Toss shock charge at front. Pick up shield. Charge poor fools. Scavenge another charge. Repeat.

Fast hands with it also switches out your secondaries almost immediately. This was true with the riot shield, but is painfully slow with the assault shield. I wasn't intending to unlock the assault shield until I found a switch cancel that worked fast enough with the shield. The equipment cancel from black ops 1 that someone posted in these forums still kinda works. It is a little different, but faster now. Switch > Tactical Equipment > Switch [ > Switch > Switch ] The part in the brackets just cancels the quick raise time of your other weapon, which with fast hands is usually incredibly fast, so this is optional depending on what weapon you are switching to.

I'm on PS3 and I've tried this in game a couple times without any success. Then I went to a custom game and tried a few maps (such as the houses in nuketown with single doors). I can't get it to plant anywhere near any other object. I can't plant it anywhere where it would make it impassable. I'm not talking about being in the way, but absolutely impossible to get by.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about blocking entrances with the shield while you're carrying it. Which is what I like to do, as well. Blocking the front entrances to either of the houses on Nuketown in HQ/Hardpoint = fun.

Yemen blocking the balcony where the spices are... the side entrance by the planks going into the 2 story building, and on the other side ofthe planks is where I have seen it planted. Overflow in the hallway going up to the baskets, and just by the fountain going into the cafe. Standoff in the mechanics shop at the top of the stairs. Plaza on the top of the buildings and in the coat room by the bar. My understanding is that the rules for planting one's shield are similar to rules for a guardian/sentry gun I'm pretty sure he was talking about blocking entrances with the shield while you're carrying it. Which is what I like to do, as well. Blocking the front entrances to either of the houses on Nuketown in HQ/Hardpoint = fun. I have witnessed it both being done... planting and walking it around... in these locations. Disclaimer: nevertheless, I cannot say without 100% certainty about if and where the shield was planted or raised, as I was too gosh darn golly gee whiz busy killing people to worry about the shielder. Most of those games, I was TDMing short handed (ie: 6 on 4... 5 on 3) and was too busy covering flanks and making sure we didn't get shot from behind or throwing back grenades. Sometimes, my whole team was in the same room as me and I just couldn't keep track of who was the shielder and who was the killer. Best way to test it.... try a custom game with no bots, make a custom shield class, and see where you can plant it or not. I have no reason not to believe that if you can plant in a custom game, you can plant it in a live, tdm.

markopolo - Thanks for the response. I did try it out in some custom games but I just couldn't find a spot where it would work. I'm sure there are some places where this can be done and your suggestions are a good place to start.

Okay... I tested it and for the most part, I was wrong ish about the planted part
It won't let you plant inside a door way... you have to give it a few feet... enough so someone can get around the shield. The best logic to use is think you're planting a sentry gun or a guardian. If you can plants those, you can plant a shield. For me, all I did was hold the R1 button to plant, and had the shield go red. Once it stopped being red, it was plantable. I did this on Drone, Overrun, Plaza, Hijacked, and one more that name escapes me at the moment
But you can not plant it, and plug up a doorway supernicely. That you can do.
Sorry if I mislead anyone

I once died to a shield in the middle of an elevated walkway in Express because there was a shock charge and a bouncing betty hidden on the other side. Couldn't see them, walked by, died. Thought it was just a benign planted shield in the middle of the hallway. I was wrong.

RiotContr0l (youtuber) just stated melee is significantly faster while standing. I haven't tested this.

RiotContr0l (youtuber) just stated melee is significantly faster while standing. I haven't tested this. I haven't tested that either. One thing that seems to happen when you shield bash while standing (not touching the L-Stick) is that your shield bashes seem a bit more accurate. I'm not really sure how to explain it but when I'm moving the L-Stick (an attempt at 'aiming') I can miss shield bashes even at point blank range. Without it I can hit shield bashes more consistently and avoid flying past enemies. This worked for me in MW3 as well.
