MW3: need advice on a network problem
« Thread Started on Jun 19, 2012, 7:33pm »

Since last Saturday I started having a weird network problem every time I play a MW3 MP game: from time to time my connection will suddenly drop from 3-4 bar to 1 bar, and cause the game to be completely unplayable.

BTW, I am on XBL and my NAT status is "open". Also, I have not noticed any other network oddities besides this.

I attempted to unplug and re-plug my internet modem and router multiple times and that does not fix the problem, even after I left them unplugged for an entire evening.

Any bros who had the similar experience and have suggestions on what area to focus further investigation?

Thanks in advance!

Down/Up/Jitter/Packet Loss?

What you describe sounds similar to what happens if you bottleneck your connection by maxing out your upload. I've gotten similar results accidentally seeding torrents while playing, for example. What other network activity do you have going on? Devices? If you remember, run a speed test next time while it's happening.

My wife streaming Netflix has given similar symptoms. Also torrent activity, as mentioned. QoS settings on your router should be set to prioritize gaming.

If your router is wireless I would also make sure it is not open. A neighbor hopping on could cause problems.

Make sure your Router doesn't have a firmware update. For some reason when I had a firmware update, I would drop to red bar at random intervals. Updated firmware, problem solved. Also, try manually plugging out your Modem. I did that and my speeds jumped from 5Mbps to 22Mbps. I NEVER lag anymore.

Good luck!
