Played with this map a few times, my impressions:
1) This is also a map that follows the "doughnut" pattern: an indoor central building surrounded by outdoor circular routes. In this sense it is similar to Grind, but larger.
2) The uneven terrains offer interesting game play. Also, there are a few elevated vantage points on the map that offer good line of sights. IMHO it is a good map for AR. Not sure about LMG & SR though because the spots are not easily defensible.
Do I like the map? Yes.

The area around B flag on this map is a brutal combat zone (i.e. death zone). It makes a lot of sense to control A & C on this map and let the enemy spawn at B.

B flag area seems to be a magnet for snipers. A and C does seem to be the best bet for Dom.

Played a few times last night and this is now one of my most favorite maps. IMHO The B area is well designed for mid-long range combat among AR/LMG/SRs. Although the line of sights are longer, the fighting is very intense, the intensity level is not that different from CQC.

Mirage is the best map out of the new 4. Actually, I think Mirage is my favourite Black Ops II map <3 I don't know what it is, but I really like how Mirage plays. I can use an AR or SMG and still beast it out. Yesterday I got the '20 killstreak in TDM' challenge on Mirage using the SCAR. I love Mirage so much. Mirage, Mirage, Mirage, Mirage, Mirage.

Update: added overhead map to OP.
With the overhead map, we can now discuss more details. The B flag area is at the north, you can see the long line of sights pretty clearly from the map. The east zone is a great combat zone as well. The zones at west and south are normally used for passing through. The building in the middle is great for flanking when the main combat is happening outside.

I like the map in most modes, but it is ridiculously not fun in FFA so far.

I like the map in most modes, but it is ridiculously not fun in FFA so far. Have you tried tactical loitering spawns? It's much more fun in FFA if you spawn camp. In particular, these spots have been quite good for me. The map generally has lots of spawns in sandy areas with relatively little cover which happen to be visible from the more defensible center "ring." Picking two or three hot spawns points and situating yourself in a headglitch or elevated position near them I find to be highly productive.

Well, if you recall, I'm not a big fan of spawn farming. Personally I think they should can the revenge spawns and turn footstep sounds back on. Even just to the level they are in other game types.
My biggest problem with this map's spawns is that the couple of times I played it, it felt like Hijacked in that there were two competing games going on on the two halves of the map. As in it takes real effort to switch sides even if you want to. All the action for me was happening on the right side, and I don't think I ever got across to the left. Hydro was playing like this as well.

I find that a "problem" with most maps. The spawn choice doesn't seem to be the "furthest spawn away" it seems to be "the closest spawn to the enemy that isn't directly in line of sight".
That's open for abuse and as you understand the game you understand the spawn mechanics and can just spawn farm. More so if you are partied up.
It's always the problem with coders though, from when I was at university none of them understood maths properly and being a math genius that pissed me off.

That's open for abuse and as you understand the game you understand the spawn mechanics and can just spawn farm. More so if you are partied up. It's not a mistake, but a deliberate design decision. Every time you hear Vondy talk about "getting back in the action quickly," you know what it means. The idea of "revenge spawns" has been in the series for a while, because it fosters the kind of gameplay the devs think the series should be about (people running into each other as often as possible). The fact that people with brains exploit it is probably viewed as an acceptable cost, since they are the minority of the player base.

DV has done interviews in the past where they openly discussed this. With their map design, they have a goal of having people respawn and 'find' action in like a certain amount of time. Five seconds or something like that. Ok...wait, i found the quote
"Vonderhaar explained that, ideally, a player should never feel so far away from the action that he or she needs to run miles just to get back into the fire fight, but one should never just be dropped immediately into harm’s way as well. That’s pretty obvious, right? While he couldn’t get into the mathematics, he did specifically mention the “3-second rule.” According to Vonderhaar, data is constantly being gathered during play tests to measure how often someone is shot at (or able to shoot at someone) within 3 seconds of spawning. The ultimate goal here is to make sure that that does not happen. If action is met within the 3-second mark, it might prove a little too fast-paced for most players.Vonderhaar mentioned that, so far, the rate of successful spawning it pretty high, so hopefully that will be kept up after launch. We’ll see in only a few short days when Black Ops 2 drops November 13 on the Xbox 360, PC and PS3."
Treyarch has a crapload amount of rules like the above on their maps. From design, to implementation, to everything in between. I would love to hear more of these rules.

Don't have the maps yet (damn you PS3), but at first glance, the overhead reminds me of Aftermath.

Don't have the maps yet (gosh darn golly gee whiz you PS3), but at first glance, the overhead reminds me of Aftermath. One thing I can assure you is that this map is nothing like Aftermath :-), which seems to be one of the least favorite of the community. Mirage is now not only my most favorite DLC map (judging from what I heard during the weekend, an opinion shared by almost everybody I played with), but also one of my most favorite maps of all time. Keep in mind though that my favoritism is heavily influenced by the map's China elements :-)

I think there are a number of reasons why it's popular. i think the biggest is the color of the map...the sand. People stand out, and don't blend in, that makes it easy to spot people. Two, the map feels very organic, flows in a very circular way, creating more head to head face offs, rather than back-shooting, corner shots. Also, it's mostly just a one level map, with very few second floor windows. And those that do exist, can be reached organically, just racing up the sand dunes. I think people generally like that 'ease' of play feeling.

Grind is by far the worst of the DLC maps. I don't know what it is but I just always suck at it in comparison to the other maps. From best to worst: - Mirage - Downhill, Hydro - Grind

Most of my new map play has been FFA (with not enough moshpit to really form an opinion). I like all of them except Downhill for FFA. The other three all have sweet power positions a la Hijacked, Slums, and Carrier that make for a more structured game (which I like, but some people hate). Hydro is one of the best in the game, to me.

Only played this map once and liked it :/ No idea why it does not come up more.
Quite like how the new DLC plays for dom.
