So I'm understanding what you want to do now. If you want to go Atmos only then purely as an external dac/amp solution the schiit stack is going to sound great. Not knocking it by any means, you will be very happy with that purchase and you can rest easy that the Magni 3, in particular, is a beast of an amp for its price. It's a good idea, I think, to take advantage of this new trend for baked in surround DSP to forget about external DSP solutions. Schiit makes fantastic bang for the buck stuff. As you said though the X7 is for those games where that doesn't work (which right now are a lot of games.) It's a real all-rounder, do it all device, and again that EQ function is great. And, if you stick an "audiophile" amp on the end (like the Magni) then you've got the best of both worlds. I think DAC wise, the X7 beats the Modi primarily because of its huge feature set over the Modi. I guess I'd sum it up as DAC: X7 > Modi; Amp: Magni > X7. Hopefully this isn't making this decision more complicated for you:) (Also you can roll the OP amps which is essentially the same as buying a better amp for it). There is a very in depth review of the X7 here were it compares favorably to some quality audiophile gear.

Won't get the Smyth until Spring, most likely.
X7 is on sale for $299 on Amazon and Massdrop, currently. It periodically goes down to this price, not anything unusual but just in case anyone is on the fence.
