Here is my VGC13 team that I am bringing to Gillette Stadium Regionals. I've got it pretty perfected atm....my only enemy is the clock which is why I was considering subbing Thudurus (my least used mon) for a psych up Suicune. While gimmick teams are generally frowned upon, there are a few that stand out as undeniably game changing and powerful.
the combo I am aiming for here is Shuckle using guard swap on chansey. Chansey can then minimize up and toxic/stoss stall its way to a victory (thus why the clock is my #1 enemy). Chansey with guard swap is indestructable by combat attacks. It calculates the defense boost under evolite as well. Critical hits also do not work because guard swap boosts the original defenses. For infos sake...a scrafty drain punch will only do 14% damage to chansey...and that is if it hits...remember minimize.
So how to set that up? Well besides just leading with chansey/shuckle (which I almost never do) this team is designed to take out all counters of the endgame strategy. Gengar almost never sees play, but he is immune to both toxic and seismic toss....warranting a hard counter. Little things like that.
I almost always lead with Hariyama paried with one of the TR guys (chandy or Bronzong) They set up TR, Hary Fakes out an opposing threat to the TR and I suicide my mons as fast as possible. Shuckle and Chansey come in (moving faster under TR than any opposing mon because of their terrible speed). Chansey Minimizes up and sweeps. If chandy happens to still be around it can psych up off of chansey's minimizes. Bronzong has explosion to deal unbelievable damage to any teams lacking a counter. Thundurus is a great counter to rain teams, usually forcing a switch. He makes a great pairing with chandelure to set up TR in that situation.
If I have successfully brought my opponent down to 1 mon by turn 20 I win via VGC time rules. Keep in mind VGC rules is 4 v 4 with your opponent able to see all 6 mons before the battle.
And before anyone says stall sucks....my win rate with this thing is reconckulous. The only real fight here is setting up TR. If that is successful then it is GG. Set up TR-> suicide the two leads -> win with the most annoying Chansey ever. However, utility wise the pokemon here can work well with each other anyways. Shuckle can pass to almost every mon here for good effect (of note is Haryama who boasts top tier HP stats) I'm also packing two weather ruiners to prevent Vaprion/Lapras/Toxicroak from using their status/rest healing abilities.
Please enjoy, but not too much.

I'm stream lining my original design. If I'm going gimmick, I'm going dedicated gimmick.
I replaced Hary with Kangaskan. Its ability lets me hit ghost fake out users (namely sableye). It ensures that I will be able to get TR up at all costs. I replaced thundurus with a Blissey with the same EVs as chansey. The only difference is its offensive moveset. (charge beam, ice beam, softboiled, minimize) and ability (serene grace). This ensures that depending on the team, I will have the right key to winning. I.E. A team with a roost scizor will wall chansey, whereas a team with Calm mind/magic guard mons will wall blissey.
I'm also beginning to seriously consider wailord as the defense/offensive alternative. It began as a joke, but the guy actually had a ridiculous HP stat. He also has curse and makes great use of rest.
Key point being.... the main team is Chandelure+Kanga. In the back I have shuckle + stall wall of choice.

Status actually matters a bunch, which is why I was running Hary for over a month. He counters all the top status effects (flame orb + guts + fake out). There is no sleep OR evasion clause in VGCs.... (evasion clause for those who don't know meant that one could not use a move that strictly raised the users evasion, while sleep clause disallowed the use of a sleep causing move if the opponent had a mon already asleep). This, if your fighting type can't handle an amoongus...you are pretty screwed.
The key point I'm trying to make is the first two mons only need to be on the field for one turn. If they both last for two turns they are inefficient at their job. Keep in mind that I need to win by turn 20. Therefore, bulk on my two starters are not a concern at all. I get what you are saying though. Versatility is awesome.
Hitmontop is an option I have been considering. Fake out + Intimidate support + amazing defensive bulk. It makes Chansey useable outside of a shuckle combo. I am fond of a chesto-resto set on him.
Wailord is definitely up on the chopping block. I can see myself having an alternative fake out user (prolly hitmontop).
The reason I use chansey/Blissey I already explained and it is paying off. The specific pokemon that wall chansey, blissey will take out. The specific pokemon that wall Blissey, chansey will take out. It is the difference in the movesets
(Chansey is toxic/seismic toss AKA constant damage and status damage) Defeats all but steel types, gengar, anti status effects, and resters. Requires less turns to win. 2 turns for set up 3 for evasion 15 turns to toxic/stoss a victory.
(Blissey is charge beam/ice beam AKA constantly increasing damage with no status damage) Defeats all but ground and psych up users. On average requires more turns to win. 2 for setup 3 for evasion 6-7 for attack boost 9 turns to win
. Note that I get a good look at the opponents team before my choice and get a period where I can take notes. I then make an educated choice between blissey and chansey.

I know all those strategies, I know how to play well, I understand the tiering system. But for some reason, I'm just terrible. My poor luck surely doesn't help (missing attacks with <10% chance, flinch chains, hurt in confusion 1000 times in a row.)

Well it looks like you are taking advantage of the usual spinners in OU. If you are having trouble sweeping... You could turn Snorlax into a phazer set w/ whirlwind to really force them to make that choice to spin. He could also benefit from curse. Alternatively you could run one of your guys as "set-up bait" and simply run a ditto w/ scarf. Let them set up. Steal all the buffs. Profit.

Yeah I didn't mean to put those two whirlwind/curse ideas together. Together they are terrible. I was just offering two ways of playing that snorlax in a more offensive role.
Also didn't know you were running a uu team.
When I played mainly singles I ran gimmick teams anyways. I was never one for playing by the rules people gave me.
Hell my two highest rank teams were one concerning durant-entraintment and a hail team with a U-Turn core.

Anyways....regionals in Gillette Stadium. Wish me luck next Sunday.
My team is feeling pretty solid. Going with a bunch of buddies who also have solid teams.
3/4 are running shuckle.
It's a craze.

Recently stumbled upon a fun little doubles combo in one of my recent moveset studies ( I was looking for users of explosion). Chandy and Jellicent as trick roomer setters can set this combo up pretty easily, especially if they have a focus sash.
Swagger up a Normal gem Lickilicky. -> Use explosion -> profit
Lickilicky's own tempo lets to not be confused by swagger...and the end result is some pretty insane BP that comes out of literally nowhere.
Surprisingly simple, but very effective. Especially, if your ghost setter is hurt, they opponent use much less likely to protect or double protect.
It ends games even when it hits for "not very effective" damage.

I don't know what I am doing when I play this game, I liked to play these games, but I never really did vs, and just played against the regular enemies in the games. I only won a battle because my enemy switched into a huntail before I could attack his previous one(bulbasaur or something) and it got frozen by an ice punch, then they left.
I'm going to try to get better at this though, or just play it a bit more. it is pretty interesting to look at the strategies people use
