Lol, and that's pretty much how the Swarm Host from Starcraft 2 works.

I need to go back and finish Xcom:EU so I can get the new one.
...I also never quite beat the original. I got damn close, but I failed to capture a sectoid leader and didn't get to research the psi stuff until WAY late game. (I didn't know what I'd done wrong for a long time.) But I didn't want to start over and lose my soldiers so I plugged away at it. I got all the way up to the max number of bases, though I've only got a full setup with soldiers and all at about 3 and the others are still ramping up, but several have ships at least. I've had Avengers for a while and I make serious bank every month by shooting down battleships and raiding them. Unfortunately, I've only just started psi training and literally nobody has any psi powers.
I used some savescumming, though I largely broke myself of that and only savescum my prized early soldiers now. Really I survived by learning a particular strategy I could use. Basically once you know psi attacks are coming everybody drops the heavy weapons and pulls out laser pistols. (I generally pack nearly enough for the whole crew and only skimp when I have to due to 80 item limit.) I found out by trial and error that flying suits are actually nearly impervious to laser pistols, but most aliens will still get hurt. So everybody has flying suits and laser pistols and 1/2 to 1/3 have med kits. A few have motion trackers and some odds and ends. And every single one has a flying suit. Then it's just a tedious sweep. where you try to spread people out a bit so they don't chain control your soldiers too much. The weak ones that get attacked a lot drop everything, including the pistols if I get a chance, then they just get to wander off and soak up psi attacks while the rest of my crew picks off aliens one at a time. Originally I started carrying the pistols more to clear terrain without wasting ammo, or as a backup when I wanted to switch someone over to a tracker, but not leave them unarmed. But the laser pistol + flying suit combo is a somewhat usable psi defense.
It's good enough that I survive base attacks, battleships, and I can take on alien bases as well. But it's not great against Ethereals so I get torn up on Cydonia and as a result have never beat the game.
Granted, all I have to do is survive a couple months of psi training and I would probably be good to go, but going through battleship after battleship of Mutons with fusion launchers has gotten extremely tedious. (I usually bring but don't use 1 fusion launcher myself, as a last resort, but I hate to blow up UFO parts and corpses, ect...) You really have to spread out and hide your soldiers well on those missions or you'll get a fusion missile up your arse pretty quick. (On the up side they are hilariously bad at getting the missile out of the UFO without blowing themselves up... though that sure costs me a lot of resources when the do it.)
One thing that's nice is a lot of my tactics actually carry over surprisingly well to the modern XCom. So it's easy to get into, and very fun. It takes getting used to the TU's coming out, but it kinda makes sense and it's a lot easier to plan your moves. Although I also miss my trusty old laser pistols. They were highly underrated. Not terribly accurate, and lower damage than the alien weapons, but the TU cost was soooooo cheap! Burst firing laser pistols was crazy. If suppression fire were a thing in this game it would really be insane. As is one or two soldiers with laser pistols could shoot their way through most non UFO terrain and have TU's to spare. If I knew aliens were in a building I could just poke random holes in it from a distance and set one soldier to overwatch with a heavy plasma to snipe him as soon as he moves. Anyway... good times.
