At least it doesn't have hyperinflation.
#shots
Out of the games and paths I could choose to go, I'm very conflicted, but PoE is on the table for one gaming route I'm thinking about.

Played the hell out of the beta, to the point where I was burned out. Odd that's it's on Steam now, but whatever. It's a decent game, and you can't beat free.

Starting playing Path of Exile today with a Templar; it's not bad. Two hours in and the lack of fast-travel points combined with a small inventory really kills the pacing of the game. Everything else is fine as far as I can tell, but I will give credit to sheer size of the skill trees. They're more like skill circuit boards; it's ridiculous. The combat feels kind of boring ATM; I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt that it gets more interesting as the player count and the level count goes up.

I've played with a few friends up to level 20ish and have no idea what the story's about; is that bad?

Uh... Mousey? We found your hail of arrows that you fired in PoE a short while back.

I'm getting back into this game because I feel like I didn't give it much of a chance as a solo experience. I'm going in as a Ranger with heavy focus on bows. How long is it before I start dying to everything?

You know that mission where you have to go into the sewers to get at some general? I kept thinking I had to go into the Marketplace Sewers to get past the Undying Blockade. That was the weirdest screw up in any quest-line ever. Also Piety is a weenie. You have this decked-out Boros-themed hall, and you're just going to pile bodies everywhere in the middle of wherever? Seriously? "Hey Hitler what are we going to do with all these dead Jews?" "Awww we'll just let them lie around in the Reichstag in massive piles" No; all of the no. That's just unsanitary.

To prevent confusion in the future I would recommend referring to any modifiers as "product" and "sum" values. "Increased" and "more" can apply to both compounded and piled-on amounts.

*sum, sum for a product, compounded effects- on second thought, never mind.

So let me get this straight. Cut-Throat League is where you make a new character, play a new game, and try to out-level everyone else in the league within that 4-hour period of time?

Oh. I should try that out once I max out my character.
I'm on act 3 of cruel. The game isn't that much harder, but I've noticed that literally 95% of my deaths are coming from either lag or lighting-based mages that one-shot me despite holding 31% lightning resistance and sinking a lot of points into evasion rating. This is heavily reminiscent of Borderlands 2 on its second playthrough. At some point the equipment you get matters a lot less and you often find yourself in un-winnable situations where your net combat effectiveness takes a ludicrous dip. Rare items worth scavenging are rarely worth equipping, and a lot of enemies can just drop you in one shot if your health was low but your shields were up. The 5% loss of leveling progress doesn't seem that big of a deal, but it sure makes things feel like a a massive grind at times.

Cold arrow? You got to be high; I used that all the time on my first failed ranger and it barely gave any AoE or utility in return. Puncture and split arrow are pretty much the only bow attacks that do work for bow-focused characters; especially in act 3 where everything resists elemental damage. Puncture and Poison Arrow just melt boss characters away in alternating shots. If they follow you around puncture gets them, if they don't the poison cloud and puncture gets them. Point blank on puncture makes things even worse for those yellow-named baddies wielding hammers.
Split Arrow on its own is definitely the go-to for AoE on bow-heavy characters. Pierce, bonus accuracy, flee; all the things. You don't need chain, or multi-projectile lightning shot, or anything that drains your mana in three shots. All you need is Split Arrow and a lot of kiting.

But when the yellow dude's bleeding out and I have a window to punish him some more, why not send another arrow in his direction? Fire shot sure as heck didn't do much for me; it doesn't things as much as I would like it to burn things. And yes poison arrow is kind of ass at level 50 but it's not like I have anything else worth using.
I tried Rain of Arrows- it's an odd skill. It seems like the sort of thing that only works if your micro is godly or if you're heavily armored. Beyond that I prefer the mobility options that split arrow offers.
I said "Three shots" as in "my mana ball looks like the gas tank of an SUV after rolling 50 kilometers out". High int and mana leech on hit can only get you so far when Chain can chew through your mana quickly; it kind of defeats the purpose of using Split Arrow to gain back mana. DPS is a non-issue in this case.
Iron Grip is a neat gem to have. I might lean towards a more armoured build later down the line.

Frenzy is baller and I quickly replaced Poison Arrow with it, Chain still not so much, Faster Attacks is the best thing since diced bread, Explosive Arrow is so useless it feels like a gimmick. Here's what I might do with my Ranger

idk. i feel like kind of an ass here though thats not my intention. the games just kinda unforgiving. the main priority change there would be to work a lot more % increased max life into it though. Nope. That's what I'm looking for. dude this stuff makes dota look easy is this more like a theorycrafting game or is stuff actually harder to execute than spamming buttons? It's a case of "How do I build my character so that I can survive anything and kill everything". Micro helps, but at some point your character evolves a playstyle and it's as natural as breathing, and at some point that isn't enough. It's like Borderlands 2 where the object of the game is to die less, and the ultimate submission is partying up with other players who probably screwed up their solo builds as well.

I hate fighting Dominus not because he's a hard boss, but because my game tanks to 3 frames per second when fighting him in his second phase.
EDIT: Never mind, I forgot to install some drivers. Now my laptop overheats instantly shuts down after getting 100+ FPS in the game.
