Hey Denbros, 2013 is coming to a close, so let's talk about our favourite game release of said year. This thread isn't a poll or anything, but a place to share your enjoyment of that one, amazing game like no other. Some honorable mentions would be nice, too.
So to start, this is mine. By far.
It felt as though these games come far and between, what with a new IP delivering the brutal punch of atmosphere and emotions as much as The Last of Us did. Some of the scenarios come across as haunting, some others bitter as you weave through the hellish landscape. Despite that, though, there are lulls in such madness and one could actually find traces of humanity in this crazy world. Never felt that way in a long, long time. Hell, this is the first game that actually made me cry -- and I'm a grown man (who types in pink, lel).
This title is most certainly worth playing, time and again. Now it's your turn. :3

Most of the traditional GOTY contenders have been pretty lackluster. Most of the year's big releases are dissappointing
Dota and other games like it aren't really games I would put on a GOTY list. They're games you have to invest a looooot of time in just to play decently. When I think of a GOTY, I think of this new SP game or even an MP that has a clear point where it's over. You could argue that every MP doesn't have this close end, but let's be real, most MP games do.
I didn't play that many different games this year, so eh. My GOTY goes to either outlast or rayman legends (even though I liked origins better). Maybe last of us. I don't even have a freaking PS3 but I hád to watch every single cutscene.
Most dissappointing goes to a machine for pigs for obnoxious indie story writing and battlefield 4 for not getting its shit together

My GOTY would be GTA V. Looking forward to getting it on PS4, but the visuals were still stunning on PS3. I enjoy open world games where you can do you own thing for a while before getting on with the main campaign. I've found myself enjoying sniping eagles from the moutain tops to watching the sun go down, and even doing yoga over looking the sea. Assassin's Creed 4 is also quite good. It reminds me of an old PS stealth game called Tenchu Stealth Assassins

see I was never a super fan of zambies. Movies. Fiction. The Walking Dead TV Show. Meh. But wow. Two years in a row and my favorite games have both been zombie games. The Walking Dead Season One was just plain incredible. This year we got The Last of Us which I've raved about already. I think there are alot of parallels between the characters and the emotions both games elicited. Also, I just finished Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 1 and it was really really good (if not a tad on a short side). Lol is it possible for the same game to get GOTY on two non-consecutive years.

The. . . only game I played that's relevant to the time is PlanetSide 2, everything else is old. I would say A Link Between Worlds, but I only played 3 dungeons of it Oh, besides the Wii U stuff, that's rad too. And I played The Last Of Us, but that was a coop playthrough, was funish. I would say Project: Melee but I've only had it for a day or so~ So, yeah, PlanetSide 2.

I know the real reason why UrbanVirtue likes the Last of Us.
Hmmmmmm. There was no Bethsda RPG this year as well as Batman Arkham Cash-in being lack luster. I really can't decide.

Metro Last Light and GTA V are the only games from 2013 that I think I've played, but I have only played GTA V a little bit. I guess Metro Last Light, it's a pretty cool game, but I still haven't gotten around to beating it

Enjoyed TLOU and Bioshock a ton. Metro was a pleasant surprise, even more so since if I recall they had some pretty shitty working conditions or something along those lines. DayZ SA just went into alpha but it's already a ton of fun aside from the fact that the game still doesn't run all that great.
If I had to throw in biggest disappointment it would probably go to BF4 or Ghosts (on the PC). Also while Splinter Cell Blacklist's SP was actually pretty enjoyable SvM was an utter disappointment.

I know people are bemoaning this but I have to say I'm fekkin' loving playing Warframe. Good fun combat: play-as-you-like F2P but for a very small initial outlay you can get slightly ahead of the curve: just enough. Insanely complex leveling - which I like! Currently LOKI-Braton-Seer-Skana. Mastery rank 2. WF lvl 29.

I haven't actually played any games from 2013, but holy Foxtrot The Last Of Us was amazing (watched a Let's Play). Only game of 2013 that I wanted to buy, but couldn't because of my dead PS3.
EDIT: Oh, I did get Rayman Legends (PS3) for Christmas, but again I've not actually played it. Can't imagine it would be GOTY-worthy though.

Hard to name just one GOTY for 2013 as these are all titles I give consideration to...- #1 Multiplatform - Rayman Legends
- #2 Multiplatform - Bioshock Infinite
- #3 Multiplatform - Tomb Raider
- #4 Multiplatform - Grand Theft Auto 5
- #5 Multiplatform - Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
- #6 Mulitplatform - The Wolf Among Us
- #1 PS3 - The Last of Us
- #2 PS3 - Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
- #1 PS4 - Resogun
- #1 WiiU - Super Mario 3D World
- #2 WiiU - Pikmin 3
- #1 3DS - The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
- #2 3DS - Fire Emblem: Awakening
- #1 XBLA - Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
- #1 XB1 - Forza Motorsport 5
- #2 XB1 - Peggle 2
- #1 PC - Civilization V: Brave New World
- #2 PC - StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm
Other notable games to which I've had no experience with this year but have desired to give a play; these might be considered candidates by others...- #01 Multiplatform - XCOM: Enemy Within
- #02 Multiplatform - Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
- #03 Multiplatform - Injustice: Gods Among Us
- #04 Multiplatform - Metro: Last Light
- #05 Multiplatform - Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea (episode 1)
- #06 Multiplatform - DmC: Devil May Cry
- #07 Multiplatform - Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist
- #08 Multiplatform - Call of Duty: Ghosts
- #09 Multiplatform - The Walking Dead: Season Two
- #10 Multiplatform - The Walking Dead: 400 Days
- #11 Multiplatform - Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time
- #1 PS3 - Puppeteer
- #2 PS3 - Dragon's Crown
- #3 PS3 - Beyond: Two Souls
- #1 Vita - Tearaway
- #1 WiiU - The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
- #1 PC - Gone Home
- #2 PC - Antichamber
- #3 PC - The Stanley Parable
- #4 PC - Outlast
- #5 PC - Path of Exile
If forced to pick just one game though over all the quality games I'll pick......with "The Last of Us" as a very close runner up and with "The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds" plus "Rayman Legends" right behind it; lastly, "Civilization V: Brave New World" would round out a top 5 for 2013 for me.

As a ps3 and ps4 player, last of us easily takes the spot. I even really enjoyed multiplayer too. What doesn't deserve GOTY, IMO, is GTAV. Way too pointlessness and blandness. One of the core story missions is nothing but 10-15 minutes of driving and moving around cargo crates. WTF? That said, I did like its humor and loved the heist missions. Option B could easily take a place in a top ten saddest moments moments list (another being the "sam and henry" part in the last of us) , but overall too much blandness to be GOTY.

I'd vote for Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. They cut the fat and grind from AssCreed III, added in Pirates, and made it look great (except for anything round in shape). And it was very well adapted for PCs, even enough filters and lighting options to make it look even better as soon as better hardware is available. Currently the framerate is just too low even on a decent machine to have everything maxed out, won't run steady 30+ fps. But it's already very pretty without everything maxed out, not BF4 but it's still beautiful. And a note on cutting hte grind: now there is a point to visiting all locations and collect stuff, not just free stuff that becomes useless in the endgame. I have exactly one playthrough and reached 94% completition and it was fun. And I am not that kind of guy that just has to get everything, I tend to ignore collectibles. Also very nice: less stuff outside of the Animus, just three or four relatively short sequences that tie in with the actual storyline. No stupid magical island either. There is more to discover on the outside if you want to, but you can ignore it (like I did). Also your crew sings. They are very incompetent when it comes to combat, but it is apparent that they were hired as a shanty choir, so not being awesome at fighting is probably ok. To summarize: 10/10 would bang. Also XCOM: Enemy Within. Was released as a standalone so it counts. Firaxis has a way of changing the way a game is played through addons, which is also true for Brave New World as far as I have heard, but I haven't had a chance to play it. GTA V is very nice, but it feels bloated. Even though technically it is bigger than GTA: San Andreas it feels smaller, but more stretched out. Plus I really miss my antialiasing. It's not really pleasant for the eye, even though the graphics are quite an accomplishment if you consider the hardware it's running on. Will buy it again as soon as it's available for PC, but currently I can't be bothered to finish the story. Not captivating enough to make me look over the lack of filters and needlessly stretched driving bits.

actually I played most of the games on elantern's list. Brothers and Dragon's Crown being the exception...
but I'm serious guys. You NEED to be playing Walking Dead. Not that TV/Game garbage with Derle Merle, but the one with the loveable African American History professor turned prisoner murderer and his 8 year old sidekick clementine.
Season 2 episode 2 is coming out soon!

TWD was/is a fantastic experience, and I really enjoyed the first episode of The Wolf Among Us as well. The actual gameplay isn't for everyone, but you'd be hard pressed to find better interactive storytelling this gen. Oh, and put me in TLoU's camp for game of the year.
