I just entered Generation 3 and need to work on regen challenges (to gen 4) related to Plasma Railgun, so I would like to solicit suggestions from Den bros on how to use this weapon more effectively.
My first impressions:
1) The weapon is definitely not easy to use. When charging up, the movement options are severely limited. In Titan vs. Titan battles the only viable tactics I can think of is along the lines of guerrilla warfare: charge -> shoot -> run away. 2) The weapon is pretty fun to use though, especially when used to snipe at infantry and score critical hits on Titans.
Stats related questions:
1) From 0 to max, there are 5(?) levels of damage. How much anti-infantry damage and anti-Titan damage at each level? I read somewhere it is 300 increment at each level for anti-infantry, and 500 increment at each level for anti-titan, is this right? 2) Related to #1: against Grunts / Spectre / Pilots: at which damage level is the weapon OSK? If the above is correct, then level 1 is good enough? 3) Related to #2: with critical hit multiplier of 2.5, a max charge critical hit damage = 500 * 5 * 2.5 = 6250? 4) What's the damage level of Instant shot? the txt file says charge_leve = 1, does this mean it is 300 / 500 damage per shot? Also, looks like the critical hit multiplier is dropped to 1.5. Looks like this is only good for anti-infantry?
Strategy related questions:
1) What class setup do you find most effective? Chassis, tactical ability, ordinance etc. 2) What combat strategy do you find most effective? hit-and-run?
Of course, any tips are very welcome.

For this challenge I used the pre-charged railgun, electric smoke, and cluster bombs on an atlas titan. The entire goal is to strip off their shields, then spam out shots onto crit points.
Don't be afraid to be a vulture. The railgun has range. Abuse it.
I think the regular railgun is a OSK on pilots with only a tap, I'm not positive.

With Instant Shot mod, do you still have the option to charge up the weapon for much great damage?

No, you lose the ability to charge, but it becomes a much easier to handle weapon.

1) There's 6. 1 is the uncharged shot (hipfire or a quick shot after ADSing) then you can charge up 5 more levels while ADS. Your damage numbers are correct. 2) Yes. 3) 500*6*2.5=7500 4) Instant shot has 1 charge level. So it would do the base + 1 charge damage after charging for 0.05sec. So it would do 1000 against titans and 600 against infantry. It's still very good against titans.
1) Stryder, Railgun w/ Instant shot, Multi-Target Missile System, Electric Smoke, Regen Booster, and Survivor is my preferred loadout. 2) You want to use your ordinance to take out the shields and most of the health so that you'll have a full mag in your railgun, and then use your railgun to doom the enemy titan. Utilize the Stryder's speed and dash capacity to out maneuver enemies and stay away while you hit them. Regen Booster will help keep up your relatively low health. You may get doomed before you're able to kill them, but that's what Survivor is for. I often will go down with the ship so that I can get that last shot in for the doom. Also, don't even bother shooting at infantry, just crush them.

I have a similar setup to N1gh7 but different strategies: Stryder, Railgun w/ Extended Mag, Multi-Target Missile System, Particle Wall, Dash Quickcharger, Big Punch
You want to be patient and only fire fully charge shots. You should be charging all the time and using the Stryder's dashes to pursue and escape enemies. I typically use one railgun shot to pop shields and then use small bursts from the MTMS to keep resetting their shield regen timer, allowing me more opportunities to land railgun crits. Particle Wall is perfect for protecting yourself while lining up a shot while Big Punch improves the already impressive melee capabilities of the titan allowing you to dominate in close quarters with the Dash Core (which unfortunately doesn't synergize too well with the railgun.)
Fun little factoid: a fully charged railgun crit shot by an Atlas with Damage Core active is enough to kill an unshielded Ogre at full health.

@night7 and Lexapro: thanks a lot for the tips. Both of you mentioned Multi-Target Missile System, which I have not used yet. (Although it might be a little off topic) can you give me some insights on how this ordinance works and how you use it? BTW, Regarding shooting at infantry: of course crushing is the best way, at least against minions. However, I like to shoot them from time to time for completing the weapon challenge Another question on Plasma Railgun: does hip fire have spread or not? In other words, if I want to snipe a pilot on the roof top, can I do this effectively from the hip?

Hold down your ordinance button/key over enemy to make missiles lock one after another and fire all at once when you let go. There are three factors making the MTMS awesome: - Being able to hold your lock wihtout firing often provokes less experienced players to activate and deplete their vortex shield
- All missiles hitting at once allows you to cause massive damage by timing your attack just right
- Missiles replenish piece by piece as opposed to having to wait a full cycle to use your ordinance again. So you can acquire another lock almost instantly after firing, with every missile replenished locking automatically while holding down that button/key.
If it weren't the cluster missile's versetality, i'd use the MTMS all day (i do in LTS though).

Talking about Titan weapons vs. Titan defense, I have another set of questions:
1) What weapon can penetrate Vortex Shield? I read somewhere that Vortex Shield can't do anything against Plasma Railgun, is that true? Anything else? 2) What weapon can penetrate Particle Wall? I assume none?

I thought that the Arc Cannon drains Vortex Shield energy (or something along those lines). Come to think of it, does it do full damage when it "jumps" to multiple targets? Does it jump to all targets within the effective radius?

Another question on Plasma Railgun: does hip fire have spread or not? In other words, if I want to snipe a pilot on the roof top, can I do this effectively from the hip? No, it has spread from the hip. "spread_stand_hip" "8" "spread_stand_hip_run" "10" "spread_stand_ads" "0" "spread_crouch_hip" "7" "spread_crouch_ads" "0" "spread_air_hip" "10" "spread_air_ads" "0" Oh and I forgot to note up there, the instant shot attachment does not change the critical hit multiplier on the railgun.

The Particle shield seems to have 200 health. 2.5 of the health is drained every 0.1 second.
Most weapons when absorbed by the Vortex shield drain part of its charge.

I used it with the Insta-shot attachment with a Stryder titan, using the same playstyle you'd use with the quad rockets and the Stryder. (get super close range and dash circles around the enemy while hipfire blasting him and reloading. Don't forget to spam your ordinance (rocket salvo) every chance you get!)
Don't even bother trying to use this thing long-range. Just like with pilots, sniping is a bad tactic in every situation in Titanfall.

Going back over some gameplay I've recorded I see that on more than one occasion when I score a critical hit (neon hitmarkers and even one time completing a critically conditioned challenge) with a fully charged plasma railgun I'm not getting any critical multiplier. WTF!! here is one example but I've got more ( example ). At first I thought the shields must have been coming back and some latency caused some issues but that doesn't explain all of the instances.

In that video you linked, you may have hit the vortex shield, breaking it with part of the damage, then the leftovers applied as crit damage.

I kept coming up with similar reasons why I didn't get a truly massive hit, 'must have been this or that' but I can't find a hit for more than 4k damage in any of my gameplay. My current guess is that damage from a single hit is capped at about 3500. Going to need to do some testing I think. Here is another example. Just before and after images but no votex shield to get in the way and I'd just landed a couple rocket hits so the shields weren't coming back. /photo/1/large
edit: actually 21 seconds on a ogre would make for something like a 1.23x critical multiplier based on 3k base damage.

To efficiently use the Plasma Railgun it’s all about maximizing its strengths – dealing high damage to Titans from far away – and minimizing its weaknesses – a low fire rate and requiring a perfect shot. A Stryder Titan’s speed is very helpful to make sure distance can be put between an enemy and the Titan Sniper. If a Titan does get too close, the Big Punch Kit can help push them away. Ordnances and Tactical Abilities need to be selected based on fighting Pilots, since the Plasma Railgun is a liability against the quick moving Pilots. The Cluster Missile and its secondary splash damage is ideal for taking out Pilots and the Electric Smoke Tactical Ability will make sure none get too close. If the Titan’s Ordnance is recharging and the Plasma Railgun is the only way to take out a Pilot, wait for them to use their second jump, so they can’t evade the shot.
