I think Mousey's right about the SP being a factor for Doom too. Btw, that Cliff Bleszinski game your referencing is LawBreakers, right?

IDK how good Doom 3 was (at the time I know it was praised alot, but I don't think it really holds up well) but if the level of gore and weapon variety in the vid is anything to go by for SP, i don't see a purpose for this game other than bearing the name doom. Id rather play those wolfenstein reboots which were genuinely good from what i've read
Yeah I think LawBreakers was the name. Its way too early to tell if that has any potential but generally Bleszinski knows how to please plus I'm interested in seeing his transition back to pc

Doom 3 was all about a single player shooter that played a bit more like survival horror or something. It was meant to slow things down and scare you. It definitely doesn't really hold up now. I only played a little of it because I got tired of the enemies hiding in lockers and vents and only coming out when I passed them and turned my back. (In other words the game literally scripts enemies to spawn behind you after you've cleared an area, so no areas are really clear until you've been through them forwards and backwards. On top of that ammo is much more scarce as well. It's not so much an action game as a survival challenge with shooting. heh That's the impression I got anyway.
This version of Doom I think harkens much more back to the original, hence the rebranding instead of calling it Doom 4. It looks like Id is trying to become king of the sci-fi action FPS again, but we'll see how it goes. I've seen some promising stuff, but nothing that totally blew me away. Having said that, I always liked the Doom franchise more than Quake. heh The Quake setting was always a screwed up, strange little franchise held together with duct tape and bubble gum. Quake 2 basically retconned Quake 1 completely, then Quake 3 was something else all together. I think you basically have to assume Quake3/Live is non canon. There's really no actual story, just competition. They made some more stuff based on the Quake 2 setting, but I mostly don't care. Of course Doom 3 was also a retcon, more remake than sequel, though at least still more or less a retelling of Doom 1 rather than a complete scrap of the setting.
Of course Id never was really known for narritive. Their golden age mostly occurred before Half-Life changed the way people look at storytelling in FPS games and Quake 3 just did away with single player and narrative completely. Since then I think Rage and Doom 3 are the only games they've done with any real attempt at storytelling... with mixed results. I'm not sure how much storytelling they'll actually do with Doom. Seems like, mebbe not a lot. I'm kinda okay with that. The original sort of just set you up then sent you into a string of levels for you to murder everything in sight within and solve a couple of puzzles and traps. As long as the action is fun this could be pretty cool.

Since people are also reporting fan issues with the PS4, I'll steer clear of this one.

Collected everything from every other shooter and does nothing new. Just feels like another shooter set within DOOM. Online side of things was given to another studio which done halo/CoD content it feels like clone with arena maps. Just does not work...... Shame oh well thank you for the beta and time to avoid it.

So I bought it on a whim. I figured, hey Wolfenstein was good, maybe Bethesda could get ID to do Doom right.
First impressions on the PS4 version. Settings. Pretty nice, especially for a console game. No button remapping sadly, but the ability to turn off things like the compass and objective markers and notifications is nice. Gives it that old Doom feel of having to actually explore, but even with those enabled I didn't even realize I had a compass for the entire first level, because I didn't need it. You can turn off "Look smoothing" or set it to whatever percentage you want. That quickly was turned off. Audio options are standard, but it was the Video options that really excited me. Motion blur can be turned off and the default FoV is 90, but I turned it all the way up to 110. FoV slider on a console game? Thank you based ID.
Story wise I haven't really progressed much, but it seems pretty typical of Doom. UAC summons demons. Not sure if it's a remake or a sequel, kinda feels like both at this current point.
Gameplay, the bread and butter of the game. It's great. The movement speed is pretty fast. There's no stamina. No sprint button. Just move fast. Which brings me to my next point, and favorite. You can once again dodge enemy fire. They're projectiles which means you can actually move around the map, dodge fire, and use the environment around you to manipulate the enemy to do what you want it to. The guns are solid, the starting pistol can OSK Possessed with a headshot, has decent range, infinite ammo and no reloading. The shotgun is decent, able to OSK weaker enemies up close and still useful at more medium ranges. Sadly it's not quite the Doom shotgun of yesteryear, but it's solid so far. It has Upgrade systems for both guns and your suit, and so far they're not that bad and they don't take away at all from the game. I currently have the 3 round charge up for my shotgun, and it's pretty dann effective. Maps return and are better than ever. It's both a 2D map like old Doom, but at the press of a button becomes a 3D map showing you the different levels of each map, though generally I prefer the 2D map. As for difficulties I went straight to Nightmare, the highest difficulty by default. Normally I hate hard difficulties, but with Doom, the harder difficulties always held a place in my heart. Probably because it's a game that rewards moving, using the environment to your advantage and collecting health and armor to survive. And this Doom does not disappoint in that regard. With full armor and health the most hits I can take is about 2 from Imps without dying, and it makes the game challenging and fun.
Overall from just the hour or so I've played of the game I would recommend it, even if you just wait for it to go on sale.

Generic multiplayer aside, DOOM's one major sour point is it running Denuvo, an overbearing anti-tampering system for piracy. Modding communities are flipping their shit because the Doom franchise is a known giant for user content -- this DRM effectively kills that.

I did the campaign on the default difficulty. It was the first single player campaign I've completed in god knows how long; other games I typically get bored of and quit. I thought the campaign was great, tons of exploration, just enough hand holding that I spent tons of time exploring and finding out where to go but never got frustrated and just quit or looked it up. The worst thing I can say is that boss fights seemed a little uninspired.
The MP - I played a lot during the beta and have played a bit since launch. It might not be something that I end up with 20+ days played in, but I found it enjoyable. I don't know that they could have come up with something that felt new and unique and fresh, was really good, and satisfied purists. It's certainly a better MP experience than some other well-received AAA shooters of late.
The realities of the PC market are that piracy is rampant and many of the consumers that do pay wait for sales to buy games for significant discounts. It's where a relatively small portion of the revenue comes from. Rather than spend a lot of effort engaging a small percentage of their revenue to create mods for a relatively small audience, they built Snapmap, where anyone on any platform without the technical expertise required to make mods can create and share custom games. Based upon some of the examples they put in, the system seems pretty robust. With the right curation, I think it might be amazing.

Here's all the rage today for gaming journalism.
To more a personal side, I feel Polygon dealt a big disservice to not only themselves, but id Software; their footage is fucking deplorable, hardly worth displaying the potential flair these game developers are trying to sell with this title -- or of any major profession, for that matter. You don't chronically miss the barn's broadside and expect people to take your word seriously.
Really, it's just another nail for Polygon's coffin. The realities of the PC market are that piracy is rampant and many of the consumers that do pay wait for sales to buy games for significant discounts. They are losing a much bigger revenue of the PC market, as again the Doom franchise is huge. You still have people -- including John Romero -- producing content for the old Doom as of twenty years today. SnapMap has also been showing rough edges, like the fact you're regulated to non-geometric building and two-weapon load-outs.
Dumbed down to hell even within basic standards, essentially.

Dumbed down to hell even within basic standards, essentially. But even if they were to build it, it's unlikely that it would see that level of success. The market is different now. How many recent cross-platform AAA titles owe a significant amount of their financial success to the modding community? I just looked at the Steam top games list - I don't know about the modding community for GTAV, but given that PC wasn't even in the initial launch, I can't imagine it's a significant portion of the game's revenue. The only one that stands out is Skyrim. Why wouldn't they go the route that they have? They provided a product that provides access to UGC to all of their consumers, not just 10% of them. They'll end up with much more, because anyone can create and publish content. The rough edges of snap map can be polished, and they can focus their development efforts based upon feedback. And there's nothing stopping them from opening things up to pc modders at a later date. It's the gaming community on the internet, if they don't get exactly what they want they'll complain vociferously. They're not going to have reasonable expectations for a beloved franchise. The Internet is generally devoid of moderate voices. It's filled with Curt Schillings - people unafraid to boldly share their opinions regardless of the fact that they're terrible and/or reprehensible, that given the opportunity would drive a game company into the ground.

Don't forget Fallout and I know the modding community is pretty important to ARK as well. I don't know if I'd call it AAA, but it's become major player. The XCOM games have lots of mods as well and they definitely are AAA. That's just going off the top of my head. Modding is still very much alive, if perhaps, less visible.
Personally I don't begrudge Id too much for the DRM thing, but if this turns out to be a permanent situation then I don think they will lose out on more sales than they are preserving by making it harder to pirate. Id used to make the game engines that made the FPS world go around. A lot of modders have been waiting to get their hands on it and hoping Id might have provided a top notch engine once again. But if they aren't going to have access or tools then many of them will just skip the game.
There's nothing immoral about that. If Id just wants to release a game that people enjoy for the game then that's fine. But if they want to build a community around it like they used to have then this is not a good start, and I can see why many people would be genuinely disappointed.
