The internet's pretty cynical about this game AFAIK. Jimquisition covered it saying "I have no reason to hate it, but I have a really bad feeling I'm going to hate it" An article on /r/gaming up to 3900 upvotes talking about Battlefront 3 being a potential flop. nerdgasmicblog.blogspot.ca/2015/04/star-wars-battlefront-is-starting-to.htmlPlaying Devil's Advocate I would argue: 1) The lack of a singleplayer campaign may cut down a huge chunk of Battlefront 3's potential sales straight away, but to say any game is any worse off for it is silly. 2) Galatic Conquest sounds like conquest where the points exist on different planets that players would have to mount one-man fighter jets and travel through space. With only 40 humans in play at once the density of players would be so low the game would probably be unengaging no matter how many AIs are on the field. Not having this sounds like a good thing. 3) If DICE thinks 40 players with/without bots is suitable for their given game and given maps I trust their word on it. A lot of Battlefield fanatics might look at this as undercutting the 64-player large-scale battles offered by Battlefield titles, and they have every right to reject the game on that basis. 4) No space battles? I have this feeling that space combat was a major part of previous Battlefront games, and somehow the formula managed to somehow interact with the ground battle going on down below? 5) 4 playable planets is a bad thing? Counter-Strike has lived off of 3 maps for decades; if your map pool has at least one good map you've done your job. 6) Units from the original trilogy? Good. I don't even know anything about Star Wars' expanded universe; let alone from the prequels. This a is sequel coming back after a long hiatus; the last thing we need is an alienated audience looking at the franchise they like but seeing nothing they're familiar with. 7) You want to control an AT-AT? Are you high? In Star Wars: Rebel Alliance there was a mission where you get to pilot one of these things. It was boring. There were enemies constantly engaging you within your cone of fire all the time, you were moving forward in a straight line the entire mission. By the time you were on an elevator that could conveniently hold an AT-AT the suspension of disbelief is long gone. From a design standpoint AT-ATs are the stupidest thing ever. Don't make a human pilot those things; just don't. "Battlefront is not about creating a tight, tactical and realistic military shooter, it is about recreating the sprawling sci-fi chaos of Star Wars battles." I mean- I guess. But Star Wars isn't renowned for the intrinsic nature of its combat. It's a universe designed to make dramatic fights happen over ones that make the slightest lick of sense. You think laser weapons should fire projectiles so slow they can be deflected by someone 50 meters away along with subsequent shots? Why is the Millenium Falcon the only ship smart enough to have a cannon that fires backwards in case of pursuers? Shouldn't there be more than one of these waffle ships and less a/b/x/y-wings? I get that it's pointless to watch a puppet show to observe the strings, but the Star Wars franchise in video games has always carried very thick strings in their games. On that basis alone I just can't get into them.

Going over those, I'm with you on some of it, but...
1. The lack of singleplayer (not necessarily a campaign or anything, but rather the ability to play any map and gametype alone against fairly capable bots) is a huge blow to the size of potential customers. I've seen many discussions regarding BFII where lots of people hardly if ever touched the multiplayer and treated the game like a solo/small group coop shooting gallery experience. I would argue that the lack of singleplayer is a grossly underestimated element of a video game. The focus on MP-only is a poor decision as the game's life is then entirely reliant on other players rather than continuing to be a game one can play years down the line.
2. That's not what it is at all. Galactic Conquest was simple turn based strategy system that transitioned to a map&gametype whenever one of your fleets moved to an enemy fleet or an enemy planet. There is no real-time transitioning between planets; everyone is on one planet, one fight at a time, the round is played, the winner takes the planet or destroys the enemy fleet, and fleets are moved around again until there's another conflict that loads the next round. Round after round will have a back-and-forth until one side is pushed back to their home planet and is completely taken over. It was one of the cornerstone systems for the singleplayer experience (as mentioned in 1, not a story driven campaign, but something like a very very simple Civilization game module on top of the shooting. Simple resources almost zero customization, made to establish a strategy of the where and what - the benefits from planets you own, the fleets you've manufactured and credits earned from battle to build more fleets or buy units/powerups).
3. Got no problem with 40 players if there are competent bots to fill up any empty slots. However, this is DICE. They've never made competent bots. Hell, their bots are barely capable of moving.
4. Space Battles were rad. BFI didn't have them. Only a few maps had "aircraft" and they were mostly just ineffective taxis. BFII had space-only battles where the objective was to take out the enemy carrier by landing in the enemy dock and sacking the instruments inside or taking down the enemy fighters, whittling down the capital ship's shields and breaking the ship modules outside. It was what 2142's Titan Mode wished it was, before 2142. The PSP Elite Squadron had the prototype version of what BFIII would have had - transitioning between ground and space on the fly, a battle with differing objectives taking place in both simultaneously, and players could spawn in space in a fighter, in the space carrier or on the ground as a soldier. One very important thing regarding the existence of starfighters in BFII and the PSP titles was that the starships had very little interaction with ground units; they weren't bombing them willy nilly but instead focused on fighting other aircraft and attacking objectives. ANOTHER important thing is that unlike Battlefield's limit of only one or two aircraft per map at a time (and players had to wait for someone to crash for it to respawn), space battles in Battlefront were all-out, everyone could be in a ship at the same time if they so chose.
5. Pretty sure a PR guy mentioned there are more than four planets and more than a few maps. Number of planets isn't important, there can be more than one map on a single planet after all. There just needs to be more maps. BFII had a buttload of maps, many of which were good. Also, to hell that noise, one map is not enough. Counterstrike didn't survive because of one map or good gameplay; it survived because Valve kept pushing it as a packaged product with the eighteen re-releases of HL1 over several years and hyped it up as "the most competitive shooter".
6. A focus on the original trilogy is fine, and the loss of the Clone Troopers is no big deal (their infantry and vehicles were almost identical to the Empire, so no loss there), but the Droids were actually pretty interesting and unique gameplay wise. Also, though everyone may point to the original three, today's target audience for this game is probably just as if not more knowing of the prequels simply because they're more recent.
7. Yes, AT-ATs were extremely limited in BFII, not the kind of thing that could fit into general play. In Battlefront II, they were serious business on the one Hoth level they were were in. Slow, powerful, took a long time to do a 360°... The open field they started in allowed them to approach with a bit of cover/concealment from the terrain when approaching the Shield generator. This bit of wiggle room allowed the ATAT to suppress the openings/spawns that rebels could approach from on the frontline rather than move on, letting the stormtroopers move in and pushing the fight underground. Whatever DICE is doing with AT-ATs, make it into a mobile objective, letting it be player controlled would be a bad idea. I've no problem with it being a semi-automated on-rails vehicle.

It's hardly fair to compare a reboot with a direct sequel to what was at the time a company's most successful game. It's totally understandable that the relative budgets are not equal because a franchise who's last game is a decade old isn't exactly a reliable thing to sink money into for a AAA studio. I think it's totally fair to knock Dice for their total inability to leave their comfort zone on this project, but to do so for the sheer amount of content is stupid. It's not knocking DICE so much as it's knocking EA for killing studios and thus killing BattleFront. Any who I just liked the site for the Komm, susser tod and thought it was more funny than anything else. Also the nostalgia for the defunct studios.

Sort of looking forward to battlefront but EA. Could be a fun game DICE had a rocky history when it comes to titles over the past couple of years.

This game is looking more and more intriguing to me. Just as Mousey was saying, I too can sympathize with DICE's reasoning and decisions with regards to their development of this game; I believe they will manage to create a very fun and extremely atmospheric game.
I'm exited to hear that there will be at least 6 and possible more dedicated online Multiplayer modes as well as 4 online/offline so-called Mission modes too; ranging from large-scale 40-player battles to much smaller ones too.
1. Fighter Squadron may not be the return of epic space battle combat that many wanted to see, but a 10v10 dogfighting mode looks like a ton of fun to me.
2. Walker Assault, involving 20v20 players, will likely be a fantastic game mode.
3. Blast will provide a more traditional-like team deathmatch mode to the game, but apparently with a twist. I look forward to hearing more about the supposed "twist" for this 10v10 deathmatch mode.
4. Supremacy hasn't been officially announced, but I've seen speculation saying that it might be similar to Conquest or maybe to Domination.
5. Drop Zone has been officially announced and it'll be a 10-minute 8v8 mode where teams are battling over drop zones. Once these zones are captured the drops provide power-ups for the teams which captured it.
6. Cargo is yet another online multiplayer mode that hasn't been officially announced and I again haven't looked for any speculations.
7. The Survival Mission can be either a single player or 2 player co-op mode about fending off 15 waves of Imperial Forces. Will the AI be of any noteworthy quality?
8. The Battle Mission will supposedly pit a player in a head-to-head battle with another player (1v1) while both are supported by AI assistance. I guess the real question with this mode may be how useful the AI bots turn out?
9. The Hero Battle Mission will allow players to face off against each other with iconic characters.
10. The Trials Mission is unknown and I haven't looked for any speculations.

I appreciate DICE's gesture of offering the beta to all players. I was determined to NOT get this game (at least not at the launch), but now I reserve the right to change my mind pending beta impressions

Watched a twitch streaming of Walker Assault for 10 minutes:
1) no reason not to choose 3rd person over 1st person, for better views of the battlefield;
2) no need to ADS unless your target is very far away;
3) rebels never win;
Not a big fan of Star Wars and 3rd person, I see very little appeal from this game. I will play one game session in beta and that is probably all there is to me.

I think it looks like a fun game, but not too interesting or complicated. That's fine though, it reminds me a lot of how the original SWBF games were played
I feel like classes should have returned though, maybe with some CoD/Battlefield style customization.
