Been doing some movie going this past week.
The Martian: 5/5 Sicario: 4/5 Everest: 3/5
The Martian is a must see, no question. Doesn't matter your taste in film. Sicario appeals to a much narrower audience, but is excellent nonetheless. Everest is solid, but unspectacular, and falls short of the documentaries and books that cover the same events ('96 Everest tragedy).

"Pentagon Wars" is a 'dark comedy' movie about the development of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. The Military-Industrial-Congressional-Complex at its finest. Also I found this: www.dote.osd.mil/Also the F-35 Lightning is hot garbage.

Anyone here see Mr Holmes? I just did, and I loved it. It's not exactly the normal thriller detective movie you'd normally find in Sherlock; this one takes it slow. Ian McKellen acting as an elderly retired Sherlock is enough to sell this movie on. Even when he's witty and energetic, you can still feel the weight of his age slowing him at every encounter. If you want to see solid storytelling, convincing character development, and Sherlock Holmes do what he does best, I recommend this.

The church scene was what sealed the deal for me, it was a good movie up to that point, then it was a great movie after that.

I'd say this movie pays homage to the old-school bond films with its elements of humour mixed in along the way. Because those elements never go overboard we see people like Samuel L Jackson's character play someone who can't stand the sight of blood, yet can be intimidating when the time calls for it. Overall the concept's just well-executed.

Honestly the only problem I had with the movie was how often they kept referencing Bond films. Once, okay, Twice is pushing it, but they did it what, 4-5 times? We get it you're a "not Bond, Bond film".

I managed to watch the Karate Kid reboot. It turns out Jackie Chan can do drama, and Jaden Smith isn't that bad at acting.
They also learned kung-fu; not karate. Kung-Fu Kid.

Watched Star Wars: The Force Awakens twice so far. Star Wars is good again. Not perfect, definitely had some issues, but overall a solid film and easily on par with the Original Trilogy

I've heard nothing but good things. On one hand I have a hard time getting into most sci-fi that isn't utterly gritty and dark, on the other hand I run the risk of having spoilers run my way.
I recently watched a documentary called Cowspiracy. The butt of this documentary's argument is that cars and fossil fuels aren't the largest polluters of the environment, moreso the expansion of agriculture. The growing population and size of cattle with their by-products contribute to global warming because of the kind of pollutants they release. A cow is a creature that can easily reach one tonne in size, or at least 600 lbs depending on breed and gender. These things eat more, they poop more, and in general they take up a load of resources to feed until they're ready for slaughter. Until then you have loads of methane and nitrates polluting the atmosphere, and supposedly equals volumes of each gas contributes to global warming by a factor of 25 times and 300 times that of CO2 respectively over a 100-year period. It's a really significant claim; Wikipedia's sources on Global Warming Potential 404'ed, and I can't be arsed to find another source. I don't know if that's accurate.
The documentary goes on to suggest that many agricultural organizations are unwilling to talk about this matter. This idea was pushed that the industries are so big that their influence went unregulated as they lobbied in the government. This was convincing for developing countries like Brazil, but I'd assume no government officials in developed countries perceived this to be a problem in the first place.
The second half of the documentary gets... preachy. It goes on to pose potential solutions in case cattle really are a significant contributor to global warming, then it pushes veganism out of nowhere. Maybe veganism rubs off on me the wrong way, but the idea of eliminating all meat from our diets seems like we're no longer taking advantage of our omnivorous nature. Our cerebral evolution was only made possible through meat, and discontinuing that may cut off options in the future if we need them. That, and vegans are all crazy.
Overall there's a lot of interesting stuff put forth, and so long as it has me thinking I'll give it credit for that. It would be nice to see more investigation on this matter; I'd like to know how much of this is true.

One small thing, unless there are transgender cows, all cows are female. Male bovine are bulls.
And the first half sounds interesting, can't stand Vegan dogma so I probably won't watch.

Finally saw the gosh darn gee willy wonking movie.
All things considered the storytelling is brilliant. Many characters were strong, maybe one or two were a wet blanket, some turned out to be a red herring after seeming like promising badass, but I enjoyed the ride anyway.
Are the homage scenes too much? Maybe. Would a movie that leaned in on the "expanded universe" stuff sit well on its own? I don't know. That doesn't sound like a risk worth taking. EDIT: As the Nostalgia Critic puts it- Abrams knew that in order to continue the Star Wars franchise he needed to establish what Star Wars IS before anything else.

I'd say the Kung Fu Panda trilogy is pretty good. Dreamworks is stepping up their game.

Also the F-35 Lightning is hot garbage. You literally have no idea what you're talking about. Over budget sure, not garbage. Also The Revenant was fantastic.

it was fine but they couldve been a bit more subtle with the homage scenes ^ LEGO Batman in a nutshell.

blackbarney ... iF KFP3 was a worst, then Finding Dory has to be a worst as well. They were both horrible and a total cash grab. But I agree with most of the others on the list that I saw

I thought KFP3 was a real snoozer. Finding Dory, I thought, was really good but SUCH a disappointment from the first one. Also, my daughter HATED it. She thought it was super sad, and I think she's right.
We got really spoiled this year with animation though (Kubo, Moana, Zootopia...)

My daughter found the plotholes in FD... That says something about a movie when a 6 year old knows that that's not how echolocation works.
Agreed that this year was great for animation... I even liked Secret Life of Pets too. Finding Dory was just such a huge disappointment, much like KP3 or the last few Shrek movies. It deserved a much much better script and ideas that were beyond "How can we rip off Finding Nemo as much as possible?"

If it's a Batman movie that acknowledges very obscure villains like Polka Dot Man, Egghead, and Condiment King in any degree- you're probably more Batman than any Batman-related piece of media ever.

LAIKA, MAKERS OF CORALINE. So... I finally went back and watched Coraline. This movie fell under the RADAR when it released. I can see why. Nothing really grabbed at me about this movie while starting it up. I didn't know what to expect, and that's probably why it seemed so glossed over on release. The aesthetic is very deliberate for this kind of movie. It doesn't mimic Disney's way of doing things on purpose, and it's hard to tell if this movie was meant for kids. Maybe it just tipped people off as an "amateur aesthetic". That being said, not expecting anything was exactly what opened the way for this story to be incredible. Don't read ahead unless you have no interest in seeing or if you've already seen it. Otherwise just find it somewhere and watch it. At first the protagonist is getting everything she desires, but every now and again something quirky happens to tip that off. You have no idea why, but despite everything going her way you're not sure if this Wonderland is all that innocent. This is not a kind of horror done very often.
I guess the one part that clicked with me was when Coraline revisits all these places in this magical world of hers with a new perspective. I'm a sucker for those moments. Things that once filled her with glee and wonder are not all they appear to be, and every time the movie reveals such a little thing her heart sinks with yours every time.
