Anyone play? It's a city builder, but really, really good. Been out for a while; I play it in bursts. I may struggle to get population numbers over 50k in non-mod cities, but damn it, I will get to 100k pop one day. The mod/asset community is amazing, and is constantly adding obscene amounts of customization, style, maps, etc, which alongside continued content drops from the devs, really makes this game last for the creation inclined. I haven't even used mods for a city yet, and I'm having a really hard time abstaining from trying Rush Hour Beta.
April 11th edit: Reached 100k pop tonight boys! I play on an old notebook, so it won't look that pretty.

I don't have it, but I'll say that competition is a wonderful thing. They built their success off of Sim City's failure and good timing. Now you're telling me they allow their buyers to compete against them too by modding??? :D FeelsGoodMan all around.

My girlfriend got this on sale and has been playing it after being disappointed in some aspects of Simcity 5... though she didn't play the old ones so kinda for different reasons than I was. (I didn't buy it, because other than looking nice it seems like a step backwards from previous games. Hell the last one I played was Simcity 2000, and it seemed bigger and more interesting.)
Anyway I haven't tried Cities: Skylines, but it looks cool. I kinda really want to try it now, but meh... I don't have time. I'm already splitting my little free time between BO3, some Battleground, and I'm trying to actually beat Fallout 3 since I never did.
Everytime I watch her playing and arranging all those roads and things it makes me want to play it pretty bad. So much OCD satisfaction to be had there. If it got much cheaper than it has I'd pick it up, but I get really stingy unless I'm actually ready to spend the time playing a new game. I've bought way too many games for full or even half price that are now like $2 and I still haven't played them! heh heh Fuck that! That's my new gold standard, not how good the game is or how cheap it is, but the question, "Will I play it?" Or if it's a really god sale, "Will I play it before it's this cheap or cheaper again?"

Without a doubt, this is the absolute best city builder of all time. The traffic chaos is real. And they've done such a wonderful job of fighting piracy by simply offering better service via the Steam Workshop and modding community. I originally pirated the game when it was in Beta, and once I realized how dedicated their team was to continually updating it, and how quickly people were making incredible mods, I bought it.
The three must-have mods are: First person camera, auto-demolish abandoned/burnt buildings, Tweeter removal.

Sounds like good mods. I think my girlfriend's biggest complaint is that even when running for US the game tends to look a bit European, particularly the house and building designs don't look very American, though there are some she likes, and she's trying out some mods. Not all the mods work well together, though.
Personally I don't think it's as much an issue for me, though I'd probably change the roads color like she did. I like a nice clean blacktop pavement look. ;3 She also hates all forms of fog, passionately.

I don't know if it was Maxis or EA that dropped the ball with Sim City 2013, but I'd like to think it was EA's fault more than anything. The only other time Maxis dropped the ball was with Marble Drop. The game wasn't bad or anything- the whole point of that game was to drop balls.
I've only heard good things about Cities Skylines. It sucks when any game genre gets snuffed out. Though I'm completely ass with city builders, like Sim City 2000. I built a small industrial city, and I was doing well until everyone died from a fire. It turns out you need fire stations.

I like Spore's concept, and I believe it offers something interesting and new to the medium while still being a work in progress itself. This is a title where you can either replicate Pokemon or make a creature that can (literally) kiss its own ass- that's a great hook.
Spore is a bad game because... it's not a game. People assumed it was a game, and who can blame them? Nobody said otherwise. It has all the elements of a game, except without an explicit end-state or mechanics to master. That makes it a toy. Many artsy games tend to offer themselves as both a toy and a game to keep everyone satisfied. Is Minecraft is a toy? To many people, yes. People who build artsy stuff are using this game like a toy. They make creations, and people judge those creations. Then there are PvP's or PvE's who play the game. There's a demand for this sort of thing, but Spore's problem was player retention. Is anyone creating things now? Does anyone care if you recreate Donald Trump's butt in Spore and post it on the internet?
Okay, maybe there are mechanics to master, but you can't get a computer to judge that sort of thing. At least not yet, anyway.
EDIT: OH JESUS. HOW MANY SPORE GAMES ARE THERE?! EA- WHAT THE HELL.

Spore was probably the most insulting thing i've ever played, thinking about it. So much promise and all that was delivered was the most hollow framework of shitty minigames to showcase genitale-like creatures. Facebook games have more substance
just looking at its metacritic score actually makes me angry lol.

All the themes have a European feel, I agree; you always have European style trains no matter what unless you turn to mods. I was actually looking at custom themes and even the "American" ones don't seem that American. Well, whatta gonna do. I've seen a guy in the workshop making American assets for his American city though.

I love Colossal Order. 1.4 patch hit today, and it introduced lots of beautification, "mild" terraforming, mod stability, expanded, more precise control of previous mechanics such as road building, and it all works. The terraforming mechanic is actually really strong and flexible. Didn't feel restricted in the slightest. Only restriction is a bar that "holds" dirt for you to terraform with, and I didn't mind that too much. The patch made about 4 or so mods obsolete, which is good. Making a huge sinkhole and watching water flow into it is very satisfying, and so is creating mountains. So many new things to be done now, and much beautification to do and thanks to the leveling tool, building is less of a hassle. The time sink is real.

Kay, long time since I last posted about this game. I've mastered Vanilla easy mode (except for the lack of traffic mods), and have transitioned to using mods, and detailing. I'm gonna share an amusing clip.
