Any of you guys have any games in particular you would recommend for 3DS? I currently have a 3DS with zero games. At the moment I'm leaning Pokemon X or Y and have really no idea what else is good. I considered Fire Emblem as well but all the different versions of the games are confusing so I'd have no idea which one I want. At least with Pokemon its just either or and they are pretty much the same. Also... no fighting games. I don't like fighting games on portable systems. There's not really enough buttons and the controls aren't ideal for it. I'll just play Street Fighter on my PC.

start with fire emblem Awakening. Its a great place to start for new players to see if they actually like the series.
Next, there is the fire emblem fates (trilogy?). Each edition offers something different and they all branch off into their own story at chapter 6. If you wnt a challenge then you should buy Conquest. If you need something casual you should buy Birthright. Both have tie-in stories. If you really like the story then I highly recommend buying revelation which provides a satisfying ending for either route.
I love me some fire emblem so I bought them all (and some extra dlc).

Most of my list is JRPGs becuase that's what the 3DS library mostly consists of so I hope you like them or you're mostly out of luck.
Pokemon Sun or Moon: Like Mousey said, the next Pokemon comes out November 18th so you can skip X and Y and get one of these. This is Pokemon so you should know what to expect. I'm getting Sun personally and I'm gonna play the fuck out of it so we can trade and stuff if you get it.
Bravely Default: Basically another Final Fantasy game. Has a cool Job system and A LOT of playtime. Really pretty, too. Highly recommend it.
Mario and Luigi Dream Team: A light-hearted JRPG starring the world's most famous plumbers. Very fun and engaging combat compared to other JRPGs thanks to Action Commands. Bright and colorful with excellent characters and humor. Notably one of the few games that make great use of the 3DS's 3D and built-in accelerometer. Pretty good playtime on this one, too.
Code of Princess: A spiritual successor to the Sega Saturn classic Guardian Heroes, a lane-based beat 'em up. This game is VERY anime so if you don't like that then I suggest you give this one a pass.
Animal Crossing New Leaf: Doesn't really fit into any genre. Pretty close to not being a game at all. It's meant to be soothing and cathartic, you basically do whatever you feel like, there isnt' any goal aside from ones you set yourself. You're just a guy who lives in a small town. Walk around and fish, catch bugs, plant flowers, buy stuff, sell stuff, get to know your neighbors. It's kind of a sim in a way. You'll have to look it up on your own to see if you'll like it.
Kid Icarus Uprising: An action-packed shooter like Star Fox but with much more freedom of movement. Has air and land combat like Star Fox and lots of different weapons to use. Has a cool difficulty system where you bet hearts (this game's money) on whether or not you can beat the level. More hearts wagered means harder levels. VERY hard if you want it to be.

I haven't played a Pokemon since Gold and Sun&Moon look kinda... weird to me. I also didn't want to wait a month. Trading my old GBA:SP and some games to my bro for a game. He got me Pokemon X. I think I'll pickup some more games later though.
I was looking at Bravely:Default and Bravely:Second. They look pretty cool.

Super Mario 3D Land and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds are both fantastic, though keep in mind A Link to the Past on SNES might be my favorite classic era console game, and it's very much a love letter to that game. Ooh I see there's a Rhythm Heaven game that came out a few months ago, the one I had on the original DS was pretty fun.
