Just started TF2 and have limited time to play. This thread is basically a plea for advice . There are 3 big areas that I would like to get some help: 1) pilot loadout customization, 2) titan tips by chasis type, and 3) boost selection. This thread is about Pilot loadout. will get to the other 2 topics a bit later.
To kick things off I'll start in the form of questions, but feel free to share in any manner you like.
1) what are the primary components of your loadout? (e.g.: Primary Weapon + Tac Ability)
2) how would you best complement the above with secondary elements (Secondary Weapon, Ordinance, Kits)
3) what game modes is the loadout mainly designed for?
4) How do you effectively use the loadout in game?
Thanks!

Grapple or holo pilot, depending on the map. Grapple for the crappy, wide-open ones that I need the extra movement. Holo pilot for everything else (it's quite effective, and has a super short cooldown, like the grapple). I had a ton of fun with phase shift too, able to easily fool enemy pilots and kill them - But I don't want to be a stupid robot. If they let me be a human with phase shift, I would use that all the time, it's probably the best ability.
Any weapon - all are good. I lean more towards the SMGs for their laser-good hipfire accuracy, specifically the Volt and Alternator. Gun Runner is REQUIRED, and I usually like fast reloads in the 2nd slot.
My favourite ordinance are electric smoke and firestar, for quickly and quietly taking down groups of grunts (I mainly play Attrition)
Secondary varies, but usually thunderbolt or archer.
Kits I use are always health regen, the silent rodeo one (everything in this slot sucks), and of course the grand theft pistol sexecution.
the other weapons have some use in attrition I guess. But I think its best to either just go hitscan for pilots and limit yourself to using anti-titan loadouts for titans, rather than being cute with grenadier weapons if effectiveness is what you want

Top Tier: Amped Weapons, Backup Battery, Map Hack (until they nerf it) Mid Tier: Everything else Bottom Tier: Smart Pistol (it locks on so slowly, you will lose just about every head to head gunfight)
I was going to create a separate thread, but that seems to be excessive so I'll just change thread title and ask here:
What do you think about Boost choices, and in what order do you recommend?
Map Hack is the obvious choice, as even after the nerf it still wallhacks for your entire team. The pilot-killing sentry is also really good against less-able players, if you get it set up in a good spot. Ticks require no effort on your part and can rack up kills for you at times, they are super effective in CQB as players are tempted to shoot them, killing themselves if they are within a certain radius of it (and that radius is HUGE).
Personally, I use Dice Roll (I paid to unlock it), even though it's probably the dumbest choice (sure, you unlock the boost "earlier", but you still get the same number of boosts in total in a match as it's tied to the titan timer). I use it because I like to keep the game fresh and interesting for myself, and it's fun to approach situations differently depending on what boost I have ready (I've had some nice moments with the phase rewind). Holo pilot burst + my normal 2 holo pilots = 5 holograms of me, hilarity ensues.
I have leveled up every weapon to lvl 4 in my first generation.
Now I have stuck with Hemlock, alternator, good old R201 and sidewinder.
Hemlock is great for bigger maps, esp if you run amped weapons. Alternator is my SMG of choice (specially because they can have the AR sight) R201 on smaller maps but with lots of rooftop campers Sidewinder on inside maps. This gun is really amazing. Might have been the lobby I used it in, but the games I ran it in, oh boy. It felt OP to be honest. Was probably the map/players I guess... (179 attrition game)
Use Exmag (fast on alternator) and gunrunner on all weapons, although tactikill is really really nice to have. I use it sometimes on the hemlock. Charge rifle with extra ammo and charge hack for days. Feel almost cheap using that. (pistol for sidewinder)
For the rest: Stim all day. Whenever I use anything else, I feel so gosh darn golly gee whiz slow.
Phase embark and the stealth perk.
I think map hack is hugely overrated. It is like half of a UAV in cod. it only lasts for like 10 seconds? I prefer amped weapons, extra battery or even pilot turret.

qupie I have been trying to find out which level I should rank up weapons / titans / factions to, to take advantage of early leveling rewards for the purpose of maximizing merits production. You are saying level 4 for weapons? What about titans and factions?

Bring about 8 guns to be 1 or 2 merits away from leveling up (make a class with each one), and 3 titans the same. THAT is when you pop a double XP (assuming you went to Walmart and took pictures of the codes on 100 bags of doritos like me)
You then proceed to: - level up all 8 of those guns (1 kill = 1 merit, thus the gun is leveled. Suicide and switch) - level up all 3 of your titans (assuming you get 3 about titanfalls per game) - along with completing the match, winning the match, and getting a 3 kill streak
That's 14 merits, double XP = 28 merits for one match, and you only used up 1 of your 100 stolen doritos codes. Play a few matches to get all your guns and titans ready to go again and repeat.
I live in Winnipeg, Canada. Every single bag of Doritos I have seen in about 20 different stores had the codes on them. Walmart, Safeway, Sobeys, Shoppers, etc.
That's where the number of kills (or whatever else contributes to leveling up) needed to increase the weapon/titan/faction's level hits the highest point. I think it's 2 to go from level 1 to 2, 4 to go from level 2 to 3, and 7 to go from level 3 to 4. Every level after that is 10 kills (or whatever else counts) to level up. Every weapon/titan/faction level up gives you a merit which contributes to your overall pilot level, so taking everything to level 4 is the most efficient way to get the merits and increase your pilot level quickly. If you don't care about efficient leveling, then just use whatever you want, whenever you want.
SMR (micro rocket launcher) is the most straight forward anti-titan option, but the key is to hit the critbox. Softballs (6 GL) good too but I think that one can't crit. The EPG fires slowly and doesnt seem to do more damage/round than the softball and the 4-burst cold war seems more pilot-oriented to me
firestar is the anti-titan nade primarily (anti-firestar tip: electro smoke removes it), but you can also use it to sorta lock off a doorway if you're being chased. doesnt one-bang if you direct hit with it
gravity star can be pretty cute for locking people into position and it looks cool as balls, but ultimately i think it's a worse arc-nade since they mostly accomplish the same thing (screw with positioning), you get 2 arc nades and arc nades are effective vs titans on top of that. theres some oddball things you can do with the g-star like completely stopping a salvo core but thats gonna happen so rarily, I recommend just runnin arc nade if pure effectiveness is what you want
frags are awkward since you need to cook them to be of any use which is time not spent on shooting guns, and holding the grenade key Foxtrots with your movement on pc

2) tips on using the new grenades? namely firestar and gravity star. General tips are also welcome.
Firestar is my favourite anti-titan weapon, because you can stick it into the titan, they can't dash away from it. It takes out a full bar of health, and will also damage other nearby things. If someone firestars your titan, pop your electric smoke, it will destroy the firestar. Almost nobody knows this though, so you are free to keep using it offensively yourself (and those that do know it - well you made them waste their electric smoke, so now you are free to rodeo them).
Gravity star is neat when paried with any projectile weapon. I like it with the L-star. You fill up the vortex of the star with L-star energy balls, and when it bursts it shoots them out in all directions, good for taking out a group of grunts. But TBH, an electric smoke grenade or firestar just does a better job at that.

I am still not sure if I completely understand the leveling system, are the following true?
1) Regeneration re-locks all weapons, ordinances, titans, abilities, and boosts, except for the ones bought with credits; 2) Weapon/Titan level unlocks (mods, kits, etc) will NOT be reset by regenerations. Once something is unlocked (say sights for primary weapon, or kit for Titan), you have them forever. None of the regens (pilot, weapon, or titan) will reset them; 3) Various Titan kit options can be bought with credits; 4) Various weapon mods can NOT be bought with credits;
If the above are true, credits are useful when:
a) you want to have certain weapons/ordinances/titans/abilities/boosts unlocked throughout regens; b) you want to use a Titan kit option sooner before they are unlocked;
Yes?
With the above confirmed, the next question is: how do you prioritize your credit spending?

@witty - yes, all of that is true.
Honestly, I've been spending my credits on skins. I don't think there's any tremendously strong late-level unlock that completely outclass something earlier. Since you can't get duplicate skins, I figure buying them well help my completionistism. Siri is telling me that isn't a word.

Thanks guys. I have been wondering when I would use Phase Embark, yeah, use them for LTS sounds great. Perm unlock Phase Pilot is also intriguing.
So far I spent credits on some pretty silly choices: 1) 3 Titan-Specific Kits, before I realized that these never get re-locked (good news is that they are relatively cheap, and I do get to use them a little bit earlier), and 2) Dice Roll, just to introduce a bit RNG excitement.
My most favorite YouTuber on Titanfall, FrothyOmen, just released this video of his opinion on "tiering" everything:
That's frothyomen bro, though it's possible we may have scared him off . It's nice to hear you're cured of your mancrush on GameSager though. You didn't even seem to notice that G. Sager is the #1 entry in the Gauntlet, good on you wittyscorpion. Good on you.
I bought phase embark and never looked back. It is such a nice counter to being rodeod. But now, how often do you actually lose your battery? I might have to go back to another option, but it is just so usefull when you need it...
