Again. Activision wants to patent a system where the in-game items you buy or earn affect the kind of people you play against. EDIT: They already patented it. Thanks Pachiderm www.rollingstone.com/glixel/news/how-activision-uses-matchmaking-tricks-to-sell-in-game-items-w509288Sounds innocuous on the surface, until you realize they can deliberately match you up against players who have cosmetics you don't. The game will now actively market in-game items to you while you play it. "Oh, but inflation has risen and $60 games need to supplement the loss in-" No they don't. Activision is in zero danger of going bankrupt. In fact you, the average American citizen, pay more taxes than this mutli-billion dollar behemoth Activision. This company, among many other video game companies in the US, have managed to pay zero income tax thanks to a loophole in the US tax code. To sum up the video Activision has managed to set up a shell company in the Netherlands. Because the tax code of both countries claim all the tax revenue generated by both companies it goes back into Activision's pocket. Instead of splitting the money no governments get the money.

Going to see how long it is until Destiny has this implemented.

Just so I understand this clearly: They have patented a system where I am deliberately playing against people who have the cosmetic goodies that I do not have... all in hopes of me wanted to get those?
Am I right?

Am I right? Yeah, that's where it's going afaik. There's a slim chance they'll patent it just so they don't use it and makes sure nobody else does, but I doubt it.

This is like banks discovering they make tons of money of charging you fees for everything, or airlines finally figuring out it's way more profitable to charge for food and drinks or for your bags. This is the new normal, sorry to say.

Comment from a youtube video:
"For this system to work, for any game company to make any money these days, it has to be built in a way that encourages people to spend money"
Whatever happened to just making a great game and then selling it to people? CoD MW3 was a great game, had a great following, no micro-transactions or lottery-loot systems, and it sold 30 million copies at $60. It made money by getting people to buy the game.
These days? The goal seems to be to make a half-ass quality game that's rushed out to soon, sell 3 million copies and then try to milk every dime from that customer base, getting them to spend $60 on the game, and then another $150 on micro-transactions and DLC.

games are more expensive to make and the base price hasnt risen a whole lot, but yeah. its obviously just money grubbing at the players expense. but like this is cod we're talking about so its not like theyve ever been a stranger to that kinda shit. Well, it's a trade off I suppose. Or is it? CoD MW1 was like $60 in 2007. What's the base game going to cost this year? $65? That works out to an inflation rate of about 2.5%, right in line with the US's CPI inflation rate. If MW1 was $55, then the game's annual price increase has been around 3.5%. No price deflation going on. From that standpoint, the industry is right in line so I don't think they can fall back on pricing pressures. The price of games has risen. Especially so with the way players are now given alternative higher priced games to purchase for $75, $90, $100, that come bundled with extras most players don't really need (extra gun, extra map, pre-pay DLC maps, etc..). And are games more expensive to make than say 10 years ago? I don't think so. CoD is still using the same damn menu systems from earlier games and actually removing a lot of things from prior games (combat cards, theater mode, etc..). The developers just reskin it seems to a degree. Does that cost that much more? Costs of programs and other computer equipment has also plummeted compared to ten to fifteen years ago. Especially when considering processing power. It cost me five to six time more fifteen years ago to edit video footage, compared to what's available today. From my end, Activision has risen the price over the rate of inflation, and these CoD games aren't more expensive to make. So it just seems like pure squeezing every dime out of players. Jack the price us, sell games with less than before, AND squeeze more money out of hard--core players who want that extra edge.

Producing games in 4K, with HDR and lossless 7.1 audio is more expensive now, as is labor, and especially promotions and marketing.

It's not like Call of Duty has ever been known for its amazing graphical fidelity like Crysis has always been. I'm looking forward to seeing gamers buy EA Sport titles in 4K+HDR+lossless 7.1 audio. Marketing prices have gone up but I suspect this is self-inflicted by publishers.

Producing games in 4K, with HDR and lossless 7.1 audio For a market that doesn’t really exist yet? Yet every major title coming out now has all of those. It's here, should those things be tossed aside? Not everyone has a surround setup, yet every movie made now has a lossless soundtrack and broadcast TV is almost all DD 5.1. Alot of people don't even watch the HD channel on their HD set, or watch everything in squash-o-vision. Doesn't mean there won't be HD productions. I sure hope things aren't solely produced for the lowest common denominator consumer, like the music business did with shitty compressed sound.

But then I wouldn't fuss over wanting it too accurate because I could just go to the courses for real.
