Horizon zero dawn by far.
Overall though, past year was a pretty big letdown for me personally on the gaming front, or at least the shooting front. HZD is problably the only game released in 2017 that really surprised me.
Best shooter I played past year? Titanfall 2, a 2016 game.... 2nd best? Probably Overwatch lol
Fortnite is a really good game though, but I have only played it for a few weeks so too early to see if it stays fun after a while. Huge skill gap though, which is nice coming from games which dumb down every single mechanic for the casuals (COD, Destiny).
Overall I really hope TF3 is going to be huge (if it is going to happen at all), like it should. Between Overwatch, PubG/fortnite and a new Titanfall game, I think I would have all my shooter needs filled.

It’s the whole package.
A shame there’s no multiplayer though but I don’t know how they could do that.

My top games:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I didn't have high expectations going into this game. Skyward Sword was the only Zelda game I didn't play past the first hour because of how terrible it was (I did get back around to beat it last year though, even though I bought it on release). And even before that, Twilight Princess was the most disappointing game I played for a long time. So imagine my shock when Breath of the Wild turned out to be a fantastic game. Removing all the garbage hand-holding of the previous game, forgetting the stupid motion controls exist, and removing the start of the game, 2 hour tutorial, make the game great. Sure, there's problems with it, but none that prevent it from being the clear best game released this year.
Super Mario Odyssey - Unlike Zelda, I did have high expectations for this game. And that usually means it's going to disappoint me. Somehow, this avoided doing so. It could debatably be better than Breath of the Wild, but I'd rank it lower simply because I put much less time into it. 50 hours and you'll have done everything unlike Zelda. That aside, fantastic game that ends up feeling like a modern Mario 64. This is legitimately the best Mario game, hands down, and it's hard to find a bad one that isn't a spin-off.
The Binding of Isaac - Afterbirth+ - Yeah this barely came out in 2017, but it did and I probably have spent the most time on that game simply due to it's consistent replayability. It also helps that a Switch version came out so I could play it daily wherever. Yeah, it's a DLC for a game that came out 3 years ago, but whatever this is my list. Buy this game, specifically the Switch version if you have the option.
HITMAN: Game of the Year Edition - DLC for my top game of 2016. If you haven't jumped in, do it. The new campaign is really good. It's not that big, but each level plays so different from the original campaign. My favorite mission is the sniper one which is great.
Metroid: Samus Returns - Best game for the 3DS this year by far (god gosh darn golly gee whiz Ultra Sun and Moon were garbage). Easily the most hype and unexpected thing shown at E3 as well. It's only been a decade since the last Metroid title, so the surprise announcement and release of this was perfect. It's also not a bad game either. Definitely better than AM2R considering both remake Metroid 2.
Also, how about some don't buys:
Splatoon 2 - Holy Foxtrot Nintendo still has no idea how to run an online game. Literally got this to play with friends and ended up never playing with them because of how convoluted the online was when playing with friends. It's actually a great game if you just want to play solo. The multiplayer is okay, and the real star is the co-op mode. Unfortunately the co-op is a timed event that switches on and off every other day for literally no reason. Even if that stupid design choice weren't there, playing with friends in it actively punishes you for being better than your friends. You lose rank while being unable to gain rank if your rank is too high compared to your friends. The competitive multi also can only be played together in a ranked mode that you need to unlock by playing solo ranked and achieving a certain rank. The casual multi can only be played with friends as if you ran into the same lobby in an attempt to prevent parties from "ruining" the mode. It's asinine how bad these decisions are.
Arms - It simply lacks in content. Otherwise a good game with solid multiplayer. It's like the first Titanfall, there's just not a lot to do.
Destiny 2 - Hey I heard you like that sense of pride and accomplishment associated with opening loot boxes instead of playing raids and shit for rewards. I bought this also to play with friends. The core gameplay is fine, but I'm one of the few in my group that still plays the game. 80% of our clan stopped a month ago. The devs claim they'll fix things, but I'm not counting on it.
Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon - Holy Foxtroting cash grab. Of all the things Pokemon needed, it wasn't a return to making not one, but 2 "third versions" of a game that literally released a year before it. It lacks entirely in all content. The changes are very minor until the post game, where they simply replace the entire post game story with a new one where you fight all the old bosses from previous titles. It's hot garbage, and insults the last 3rd game titles of Black and White 2 which actually changed the games significantly.
And that's that, anything I didn't mention I didn't play probably, or I forgot, or it wasn't good or bad enough to be on here.
Oh yeah, older stuff I got around to:
Phoenix Wright 1-3 and Apollo Justice - Good games, I need to get around to the later titles soon. I stopped because the next 2 titles are slightly spin offs, and one needs you to mod a translation because it never released in english. Apollo Justice was the worst of the 4 games, I probably liked the first title the best so far. Fun games to play a bit when you have time, they're on literally everything now instead of just DS like they used to be.
Titanfall 2 - Great game that I'm disappointed I missed in its prime. Fixes all the problems the first game had. Shame it gets shoved aside for all the garbage shooters hogging the spotlight right now.

For 2017 releases it seems like an easy call. PUBG. I haven't played much of Zelda or Horizon. Hollow Knight was fun but I might be a little burnt out on Metriodvania games, I stopped 3 or 4 hours in and haven't gotten back.
Oh, I forgot about Cuphead. That actually kind of makes it tough. I'll go with it just because even at 1.0 PUBG needs some tweaks and even though it's Early Access, the way it runs on original Xbox One hardware can be considered a crime against humanity.

Super Mario Odyssey actually surpassed my already sky high expectations, which I can't say for many other games. I was debating it when it first came out, but I think actually think it's better than Super Mario Galaxy which too is an incredible game. My personal GOTY by a landslide. I can't say the same for Breath of the Wild, though. That game was a disappointment through and through. 99% of it is probably stems from my fatigue from open world games & my general disdain for the genre. I also hated the weapons constantly breaking.

I really didn't purchase or play many games this year. My purchases were Destiny 2, Overcooked, and Wolfenstein 2. I haven't gotten around to playing Wolfenstein 2 yet. I played Overcooked for about an hour with my girlfriend a couple of weeks ago and it was a blast, we just haven't had the chance to get back to it. Destiny 2 is a good game with some major flaws, but I still don't know of any gaming experience as fun or rewarding as doing a raid for the first time (with the same true for everyone in the group). I have 26 days played of the game, so it would be hard for me to honestly shit on it too much.
