When I compare the Medic against the assault I see two main differences
Medic Massive clip High power Revives Unlimited Health
Assault Unlimited ammo Better sights Grenade launcher Less recoil
Other than because you need assault for ammo and occasionally to grenade a building, I see no reason to use the assault class for actual assaulting, Am I missing something?

I often use a medic with M60 (come on, who doesn't?) when I want to enter an area with my team. I do often feel gimped if the enemy is in a destructible building or vehicle though, since one grenade probably won't be enough to take one down.
Though I can't explain it, the assault class is more likely to get me a high KDR (I know it doesn't matter much in this game, my overall is about 1.5 from my many suicide runs on M-COMs as an engineer). Maybe I'm more liberal with my bullets since they're unlimited? I don't get too many 40MM grenade kills, that's for sure.
And as Den pointed out, if I want C4, I go with the Saiga and Assault, not the Recon class.

yes, the c4 + ammo crate is pretty damn good.
one could also look at it like this:
Medic -more recoil -medic pack usesless, health regains by self -no way to destroy walls, mg turrets -limited ammo
Assault - c4 + ammo pack - 40mm shotgun = ownage at close range - faster reload

I know everyone raves about C4 assaults, but the grenade launcher is an absolute beast. I played mostly engineer and medic at first, but assault's pretty much my favourite class now. My favourite part of the grenade launcher is that it is basically never not a good time to shoot the grenade launcher at whatever is infront of you.

Does anyone else make killing fields with their assault class? I don't know the names of all the levels yet because my group of friends makes up dumb nicknames instead ("Aw man, 'Spanish Lighthouse' again?") but that dusk snow level is amazing for this. Fall back behind the current M-Comm lines and use C4 and an ammo crate to blow all the trees down wherever the map narrows before the next M-Comms. You can singlehandedly cause the other team to just stonewall there for the rest of the game because with 3 minutes work, you've made the entire access to the next part of the map one enormous open killing field.
....for anything else, I use an Engineer or Medic.

I love that tactic. Used in in the demo on Port Valdez. Leveling the trees makes the Lorax cry, but also removes cover for the attackers.
