So this game is a bit annoying for me when it comes to choosing weapons. In Call of Duty 4 I would always go for a weapon that was the best at either damage or rate of fire. It is strange to do so on this game. For example, the weapon that does the most damage in the entire game is the 40MM Shotgun. If I want rate of fire, my assault and recon classes would constantly be carrying around the burst pistol. There are so many variables when it comes to accuracy so that is a tough decision. And frankly I suck at determining "balance".

the mark of a good game is when it is balanced enough that you have a hard time choosing your gun.
the way I chose is just trial and error and that is working well for me. just test guns and see what ones you like. For instance I really like the scar-l, I love that gun

I have been rattling through my brain to try and decided which of spread, spray, and recoil were the most important. Leaning towards spread which would have me using the Thompson on all classes except the engineer which I would be using the PP-2000 on. It has the same spread as the Thompson, Uzi, and UMP, but lower spray.

If your FPS style is to fire precise, high damage shots in quick succession with decent magazine sizes, then in my opinion there are only two weapons worth using in this game:
Assault: AN-94 with AR specialisation (essentially pin-point accuracy with highest damage in class, head shots are consistently achievable with good aim, arguably the second best gun in the game)
Medic: M60 with red dot and LMG specialisation (lowest TTK and highest accuracy when firing full auto, arguably the best gun in the game).
I suppose you could also attach a red dot to one of the rapid fire semi-auto sniper rifles, but I find that they can't compete with the magazine capacity of the M60, nor can they compete with the magazine capacity and 40mm grenade launcher of the AN-94.
If your play style is similar to my own, then you should be able to dominate with these two weapons.

Assault: M16. Performs almost as well as a fully automatic at close range, otherwise it performs admirably at longer ranges.
Engineer: Either the AK-74u or the UMP. AK has lower recoil, UMP does more damage.
Medic: XM8. Good, clean gun.
Recon: I really like the M24. Trying to get used to the M95.
Favorite pistol is the MP 443. Bigass clip, little recoil.

here's a tip
Try to use specilizations to improve on a weapon's weakness
i.e.
ump .45 - A great smg with terrible iron sights, use a red dot.
M16 and m249 - Great ROF, and accuracy but bad damage, try magnum ammo
m60 - Bad sights, high recoil, try the marksman training and red dot

"ump .45 - A great smg with terrible iron sights, use a red dot."
That would be great! If it wasn't an engineers weapon, you should always use the extra rockets spec.
"M16 and m249 - Great ROF, and accuracy but bad damage, try magnum ammo"
M16 is guaranteed 2 burst kill, magnum doesn't matter. (XBOX)
