I originally posted the following:
And I was met with many questions as to how the "spread reduction" works on Mm specs. Any enlightening answers? Is it all spread variables are multiplied by .67 or is it that recoil per burst is also effected (AN/M16 burst getting tighter) or something else completely?
Magnum Ammo (MA), is in fact, for tossers. It's true. I believe it is the most overused and most improperly used spec in the game.
Look at what MA does for you in most cases: reduces bullets required to kill by one. This is effective on some weapons, but on some weapons it does nothing at all unless your enemy is far away, or has Body Armor on. More often than not, those two criteria are not going to come into play anyways, you'll usually be engaging at your weapon's optimal range, and rarely will enemies have Body Armor, chances are, they're tossers with Magnum Ammo on too.
Magnum Ammo has a pretty huge opportunity cost too, of Marskman Spec and Body Armor. First, Marksman Spec (Mm). I am of the belief that Mm is a far better alternative to MA in most every case if you're looking for an offensive perk. This is because of how the two multipliers differ between MA and Headshot damage, primarily. Mm, by reducing effective recoil makes a weapon easier to handle, and therefore easier to score those headshots (You ARE going after headshots aren't you?). A headshot is worth at the very least 1.68x your normal bullet damage. That is the equivalent of 2 (and almost 3) bonuses from MA:
XM8 deals 20.9 damage, 26.1 with Magnum ammo, so the benefit is 5.2 damage per bullet. An XM8 headshot however is 35.3, the benefit being 14.4 damage. I am of course assuming then that Mm does increase one's propensity to get headshots, though, even if it doesn't, I believe that it STILL is at the very least equal to MA on automatic weapons, simply because of the way recoil functions.
How often do you fire into an enemy and not miss a single shot? I'd wager that it isn't that often, and those times that you do, you're getting that kill anyways. On those times that you don't, Mm has an identical effect on your TTK as MA does, as it essentially allows for you to more easily land enough shots to kill, even if that number is one higher than the amount if MA were used.
Essentially, MA is X to kill, Mm is X+1, but every one in Mm is easier to hit, and makes headshots much easier as well, 1/3 less recoil on automatic weapons is nothing to scoff at!
And second, Body Armor (BA). Body Armor increases the chances that you're going to get from cover A to cover B without a death added to your stats. It gives you more time in decision making as to engage or run from a fight, and even better, it will REALLY mess with MA tossers who think they're going to drop you in X bullets, when it is really X+1. I can't tell you how often I get hit twice in the chest by an SV-98 just to laugh it off and steal that guy's gold, girlfriend and Mcom.
Here I've provided a list of weapons I find it acceptable to use MA on, and which one should NEVER EVER use MA on.
Acceptable uses of MA:
M14/M1 Garand
SVU/QBU
M95 Acog/Red Dot
F2Billion
SAW/MG3
Sega/USAS-12 Slugs
Thats it.
Horrendously terrible uses of MA:
XM8/AUG/M416/M16/AN-94
9A-91/SCAR/UMP
M60/PKM/XM8LMG
M24/GOL/SV-98/VSS
G3
Anything not on those lists I would leave up to user preference, though I would still call you a tosser if you use it over BA or Mm. Always consult the Weapon Stats page for more info on each weapon and how they change with MA.
