Longtime gearshead here, the beta is incredibly smooth with dedicated servers and quite a different take on weapon balance from Gears 1/2.
Gears 3 has much more of a focus on assault rifles, with shotguns still being useful but not overpowering and dominate. As it's Xbox exclusive, I doubt a chart will be made, but when retail is released in September, a community get-together to figure out how damage works with all of the starting weapons would be awesome!
I'm interested to see if damage is effected by range at all, and the # of shots to down/kill with various weapons would be extremely useful. Other stats like rate of fire shouldn't be too hard to figure out, either.

The beta is awesome. There was a tweak yesterday that buffed the lancer, which is great; I really like using it now.
Still, I do have some issues. The Sawed-Off downs me a lot, which it shouldn't, and the retro is a bit too strong up close. Some small balance issues like the snub, gorgon ink etc And the scorcher, my fav weapon, is terribad.
Too bad servers have been down all day. It's a different game without servers (in a negative way)

I'm interested in Gears, but can't really afford to catch up. I loved playing the first one in co-op, though never really played online, and sadly never got the second. I'll get it before 3, just to play through co-op someday. But I dunno when. My girlfriend loves co-op games, but she didn't dig Gears. The whole third person move around, and cover thing was just a bit too complicated. But maybe someday. We've been doing FPS's and she's certainly gotten a lot better. (She should have done, we've played through both L4D games, 3 Halos, and about 1/3 through Borderlands together. I desperately need more good co-op games she'll play since nobody else seems interested. heh Sadly none of the games she's really interested in like Bioshock and FEAR seem to have co-op and that makes me sad panda.)
Good luck with Gears 3. I have fond memories of ducking behind chest high cover and shooting things. lol Makes a decent change of pace from pure run and gun. In fact I really love cover mechanics. One of my fav features in Mass Effect and Red Dead.

I'll totally play Borderlands with you guys. Not a huge fan of RPG's usually but I love this game.
On topic I'm probably not getting gears early as much of my time this year and next will be spent hitting 15th on BO and playing BF3 and MW3 (if they actually release the darn thing...)

So I'm curious, any idea on what the framerate is? Based on the videos I've seen it's very smooth, but I'm not sure if it's an uncapped/raised cap(ala CoD) framerate or the old Crysis 2 trick of motion blur.

I think I've had some frame rate stuttering in the beta, but very very little; It's pretty smooth

Gears runs at 30 FPS and has motion blur, which is perfectly fine IMO. From a gameplay standpoint, there's absolutely nothing wrong with 30 FPS other than looking slow. It's a different game without servers (in a negative way) The official forums are bursting from the seams with weapon balance issues, but I think things are perfectly balanced (especially compared with black ops and its notoriously aweful weapon balancing). The retro lancer was certainly meant to appeal to CoD players - it reminds me of the TAR-21 from MW2 as the power rifle with tons of recoil. Devastating up close and it gives the shotguns a run for their money, which is perfectly fine IMO as I was tired to hell of the one-gun-gnasher-only GoW 1/2. Still, the more reasonable people on the gears forums suggest a reduction in hipfire accuracy, which is perfectly fine and should probably be implemented. The power on the retro should not be touched, though. The sawed-off has been getting tons of flak from the 'veteran' crowd, but I have little problem with it, the range on that thing is pathetic and it's quite easy to avoid. If it loses the downing range, I won't be crying tears for it though. The Lancer, Hammerburst, and Gnasher all feel perfect and shouldn't get any major tweaks. An analogy to CoD weapons (In MW2 where I feel weapons were the most diverse and balanced): Retro Lancer - TAR-21 Hammerburst - SCAR Lancer - ACR Gnasher - SPAS-12 Sawed-Off - Ranger

I was always more of a Hammerburst fan, but I never really played Gears too much. Judging by the MW2 analogies, that's pretty much affirmed, even though I have more kills with the TAR (used to be TAR, now SCAR). Hopefully it's good enough to hold a decent fanbase for a while, I don't plan on buying it when it comes out. But I will eventually, my sister thinks the single player is pretty funny, watching a bunch of chunky frat boys sawing people in half while talking about manly things.

My problem with the retro is, and I'm saying this as both a hammerburst/lancer as a gnasher user, that it totally destroys what Gears was about; CQC With the gnasher, you had to combine movement (evading) with aiming; it took skill. Both the dbs and retro are designed to simplify close range battles, but the retro totally destroys everything up close (even the scorcher) and with the dbs, you just can't miss. ------- I really hope they do some major tweaking to the retro, and some small tweaking to the dbs; last day of the beta pretty much only contained people with these weapons. I mean, I didn't see a single hammerburst and that's still easily the best rifle (as in, best suited for competitive players) Oh, and I'm all for a Gears 3 chart in september. There is a Gears 2 chart flowing around the web somewhere, that could be used as a basis kind of like how the MW2 chart was based on CoD4's. Just add me on XBL, tag is the same as here

Scorcher, Inks, and Gorgon need buffs. Retro may be too strong up close, but its so horrible at long range I dont see the issue. The Sawn Off is annoying, I debate whether its OP, I dub it the Noob Gun. The Longshot is much improved, and the rifles and shotguns are in better balance.
Im enjoying it more than any other beta, ever. Looks to be a definite buy.
