Having unlocked it amidst the tide of blood and dead nubs that followed me getting the M14, I started using the M14 and can't say that I (entirely) understand all the hate it gets.
While I've yet to reliably hit choppers with it, I haven't been hurting much for antitank/personnel capability with it - I find the wire guiding to be useful in regards to counteracting the lack of blast radius by simply hitting the enemy in the face with it, and the blast radius is just large enough that an enemy will be killed through a wall if they're pressed against it when the rocket hits it.
Likewise, while unreliable, I can sometimes curve a rocket around behind a rock or terrain feature to hit the camper behind and potentially kill them if I have wounded them already.
Admittedly I don't run tracer dart enough to experience the advantages of the RPG, but with the M14 as my main weapon I don't really benefit from the increased blast radius very much as I barely use the launchers for fighting non-entrenched people.
The short blast radius also makes it somewhat hilarious to use in CQB, as you can basically shoot your own feet when an enemy comes near and kill them while coming out unscathed yourself.
Since I'm still relatively new to the game, however, could somebody elaborate for me on what makes this weapon crappy compared to the other launchers?

Who said this weapon is crappy? It's my favourite pick when it comes to launchers.
Its high damage is even higher because of the fact that you can curve it in order to get tank with the most desireable angle. Against infantry it's ok, it's just hard to kill people in the houses sometimes. The main downside of this launcher is that you have to expose yourself much like if you're shooting to the enemy, and this will get you killed more often than the RPG/CG. But against a skilled Heli, that will be running V-Smoke without a doubt, it's your only chance!

a lot of people think it's crappy because it's hard to use efficiently.
once you've got the hang of it, you'll never go back.

High-risk, high-factor redemption of lethality in a gods messenger arrow of heavenly accuracy to bring the hell your fighting to the unprecedented demonic missionaries of aerial sage mastery that recreate a crimson hemisphere of fear and Pb in the form of hypocritical diving retribution cylinders leading slithering dragons of torn air in their waking charge.
Translation: AT4 is good, real good.
My two cents, I prefer I CG since I'm better with it, but only for that reason. AT4 is better statistically though.
I also hate every weapon in this game.

I prefer the AT4 due to it having the highest damage of the launchers. I dont need expl upgrade quite as much so therefore can use magnum ammo making the primary smg more effective.
The ability to guide the missle is a nice feature, though sometimes having a non guided, faster moving missle might be ok too.

I'll be honest, if I hit a chopper with an AT4, it was pure luck.
I can't guide this missile for jack squat.
you know why I use it?
2 shots to the bank of a tank to kill it. if somehow that doesn't finish him, I kill the tank with my repair tool.
I can get behind most any tank. If it's parked somewhere I can't get it, it's not a threat to my team so I let the tracer jockeys do their thing.

effiecently using the AT on moving helis has a veryyyyyyy awkward learning curve - watch some videos of people using it , try and get the hang of it the first tip " if it looks like it's close enough to hit it, it's not" It's very hard to distingiush distances when projectiles are in mid air, especially a flying rocket facing the opposite direction. Always lead your target heli, atleast as much as the heli being on the edge of the scope, and do it REDICIOUSLY. even if it looks like it's guna hit, KEEP LEADING. Dont stop until you get those numbers. Once you get the hang of it, you'll never wanna use another launcher (except for CG if u feel like anti- infantry)

Saddaminsane is very right, and I couldn't find any better words to explain it. Just to sum-up
AT4 vs Chopper: - If it looks like it's close enough to hit it, it's not. - Always lead your target. - Even if it looks like it's gonna hit, KEEP LEADING.
Like everything, it's just a question of practice.

Yeah the AT4 used to be unpopular but the buffs + time/experience have made it pretty popular. And yeah you're right, it's actually perfectly decent at killing infantry. Blast radius is overrated for that imo. It's only weakness there is the wire guiding. With the rpg/cg you can pop out, even literally jump up to peek over cover and shoot off a rocket that will hit and kill people. Not possible with the AT4.
Personally I use all three of the launchers, but RPG by far the most. Guess it's just what I learnt with + best reloading animation/noise (you see that shit a lot so might as well get a nice one). Haven't checked the stats in forever so I forget if AT4 is stronger or same as RPG, but the wire giving you some control over the angle of impact is a good point. For me the difference/choice between rpg and at4 is speed vs control.
Thanks for the chopper tips btw guys. Finally got that wing clipper achievement with the stationery at a few days ago, sick of it sitting there and taunting me so I set out to get it done. And man I'm terrible. Played heavy metal for maximum choppers and still only got it right at the end of the second round.

I had some REALLY bad times trying to kill a bird with the AT4, I wasted 12 rockets before someone else hit with an RPG. Not much going for me there.
AT4 also makes a terrible flanking weapon. You can't shoot a rocket at a tank and then run for cover immediately after the shot.
You also shouldn't try to hit an ATV with it, it just spells RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE and you'll find yourself rage-quitting when he runs you over.

Reminds me - today I joined a 24/7 Isla Innocentes server (mostly because it was the only server that wasn't full or empty - why the hell does anyone play this map? Why is it in rotations?) and chose engineer/AT4.
Immediately after spawning, I turned around 180 degrees and clubbed a blackhawk with an AT4. While reloading, I turned around again to head to B which had been planted on, but saw another blackhawk so dropped that one as well.
Chat was not pleased.

i used to hate that map too until i learned AT4 . ususally down atleast 3 black hawks every game on that map (unless the pilot is a drunk ass protard on ecstasy) then i steal one of the tuber boats (they just leave them around, so i steal them) and go under the cliff to kill them from behind. Usually the snipers don't even realize you're there

And sooner or later half their team is going to go on a rage-hunt looking for "that tactical loitering Foxtrot-Bravo that's not defending the objective (read: being an easy target)"

But only if your desperate, only.

my buddy filmed me shooting down choppers with AT4. I've started to get the hang of it.
I average about 8-10 hits every game on Isle Innocentes and Valparaiso if the full map is played (all MCOM stages).
sorry if music is bad, his choice not mine. quality is also bad, we're noobs at making videos.
all filmed chopper hits are my shots, 1 or 2 falling choppers are not mine but you can tell because you don't see me shooting at them.
some annotation: 1:28, that is a stolen friendly chopper (I took it down so enemy could get it back) 1:38, that is a UAV take down with an AT4 missile. 2:42, amazing shot if I may be permitted to pat myself on the back 2:51, another stolen friendly chopper takendown 3:11, proof V.armor will prevent 1 rocket from exploding a chopper but still knock it out of the air 3:50, my favorite shot 4:00, another UAV take down 4:08, flares will not save you! (also another example of V.armor)

I got one of those 'flick hit' AT4 kills on some annoying noob in an Apache on Heavy Metal yesterday. I don't think anything ever will be as satisfying as that - not even sniping an enemy out of their chopper is as good as blowing up the chopper and taking out all onboard for a multikill.

Shooting choppers down with tank shells is far, far easier and at least as satisfying.

Shooting choppers down with tank shells is far, far easier and at least as satisfying. (opinion) no way! I love shooting choppers down with tanks too, but there's nothing like the feeling you get when you guide a missile into the side of a strafing chopper. (/opinion) That video I posted has a shot that was just about the most epic thing I've ever done. I slammed a rocket into the side of a chopper on first stage Valparaiso and the impact sent the chopper sideways into the right most (defender side) cliff face. It impacted the rock and exploded in a giant fireball. It was like a scene in a michael bay movie. I almost fell out of my chair laughing and wishing I had been recording instead of my buddy.
