So, it looks like Battlefield 3 won't be avaiable for purchase on Steam. What do you guys think about this? I won't buy it it it won't be on Steam. Steam is more than a "store" to me, and I don't want other platforms like the crappy Origin. I want all my games on the same platform; the best platform with the best community. And I'm glad I'm not the only one: So what do you guys think? My full post on that forum here. Also they are hiding behind "we want to be able to patch the game ourselves blah blah Steam doesn't allow us to do it" while there are plenty of games on Steam with their own non-Steam autoupdater. This is an EA attempt to get more people into Origin, because if they were to give their customer a choice, nobody would choose Origin over Steam. Imho. Sorry for any grammatical error, as always

I just started getting on Steam because of Shogun 2 and TF2. I don't see what the big deal is. In fact I don't even know why you need Steam in the first place. Don't computers have enough social networking as it is? Steam even has its own web browser for christs' sake.

I pre-ordered last week through Origin. I was holding out on pre-ordering till I got the specifics on the bonuses and they finally clarified it so I thought I would show a gesture of kindness and pre-order the digital download from EA themselves. I do like smelling the box though... but I was so anxious for this game I decided the extra wait wouldn't be worth it. Although honestly it'll probably take longer than the box edition anyway.
They don't allow pre-order on Steam because they will make more money this way. And you know you can just "add a non-steam game" to your library, right? There's no real punishment for not buying it on Steam. You'll be playing it through Steam with all the overlays and community of the regular thing.

Steam is a business model, it's not your friend. I believe Valve gets a 30% cut or thereabouts per game sold. It's really quite understandable that EA doesn't want to pay that 30%.

Doesn't affect me. I prefer to walk in a retail store and smell the box anyway Provided that you play the PC version, you'll still have to use EA's Origin platform to actually play the game. I really do hate this new direction EA is taking: they boycotting steam has already affected Crysis 2.

Seems like EA often pulls something like this because, I'd gather, they hate the idea of actually having to take the effort to learn somebody else's architectures.
Like with their hamassed approach of skirting around using Xbox Live on the 360 versions of its games (leading to having to rely on their much laggier and more unreliable serverlist hosts).
If it's anything like the standard EA effort you can expect the server to crash for at least 72 hours once the BF3 download rush occurs.

why in the fuck does anyone care? go into the store and just buy the goddam disc, can't you just boot it from your steam library once you have the hard copy installed? if not then don't be lazy and just put the disc in, if that's the only reason you're not getting BF3 then you need to stop complaining and deal with some real hardships.

Even if it had CD-check DRM, it would likely be for singleplayer only. And even then, CD-check DRM is child's play to get around. It's no worse than online DRM checks. And if you absolutely must download the game, get it from Origin, D2D, etc. There's no real reason to avoid Origin since you're required to use it anyway.
