(BC2)
Are you supposed to get a new item every 3 hours? It's terrible... will they make it better in BF3?
Anyone wanna pick my ass up? I need a team that does work, I pretty much understand everything but this game... (Like spotting? Do I have to stare at someone at a certain range for 3 seconds? And I'm genuinely confused about why it takes so damn long to unlock some perks and shit!)
My tag is Shifter xd6. I don't have too long left of xblive either.

Well, it does take a while to get that G3... I only hit 22 a few months ago. I'm coming home from vacation today, so if you send a friend request on xbox live I might be on tomorrow or later. GT: Diffinity

Yep levelling up's not fast. I've got 180ish hrs and I'm level 37. If you want to farm levelups, play medic, they seem to rack up score the easiest. Those squad revives are meaty. No idea why they decided this, but there you go.
Spotting - within a certain range you can hit 'back' to tag them even if you're not looking right at them. At longer ranges you have to be pointing directly at the guy. But it's inconsistent at best, often you won't be able to tag a tank in full view and other such enjoyable failures.

I dunno man, I hit level 25 after 30 hrs of play. What's your score per minute? Should be able to find that on either statsverse or bfbcs.

Yea, that is probably me... Please don't ride me for not being leet. I play the game like it's ghost recon because that's what I like, very slow play, and also I tried both HC and core. I simply don't know what works. That's kinda the help that I need, but I'm sure if I could unlock some good doo-doo that I'd be much better, but I get like one gun after 3 hours? Lame.
With all this "help me I'm bad" going on I got into a party and got to ride shotgun in a tank and I got more rank up points in that one game than I had collected in my entire career. Whatever, I might just give up on the game for several reasons...
I mean, I know sticking to cover and such works, but I feel like I am spending all my time trying to do something that I should be doing with an actual setup. Also, the inner deadzone on the look stick is huge compared to cod's, I almost feel like I'm playing hunted; the demon's forge.

Actually, I found that after I unlocked all the weapons, I went back to weapons unlocked earlier instead of the late unlocks.
Some of my favorite weapons are the ones unlocked earliest, like the AEK, the M249 SAW, and the XM8-c.
There are definitely some sweet weapons in the late unlocks (and you don't get magnum ammo until what, level 17?), but there are no magic guns you unlock that automatically make you better... just try all of them and find out what you like best (except bolt actions, where the SV98 is obviously superior).
And yes, you can rack up lots of points in tanks and whatnot... that's why engineer is my favorite class.

Yea, what Kirby said. While I can't speak directly to console gameplay, if you want points quickly for your overall level (remember, individual classes need experience if you want the better gear too) go with a medic or an engineer and just either throw out heal kits and/or repair vehicles. It's seriously easy exp.
And as far as weapons go, I told myself that I just needed to level so that I could get better gear so that i could be more helpful etc., but the honest truth is that once you get Body Armor, you can contribute fully to your team winning. Now, Magnum might suit your playstyle more or something, but as Kirby said, some of the best weapons/options are unlocked very early.
A few examples to try (remember, one life isn't going to give you the feel of a gun, these play distinctly different to each other when compared to Black Ops for instance, and it will take you 100+ deaths/kills to really get a feel for the gun):
Assault: I love the AEK and if you can be really disciplined with your firerate you'll do well with it. The XM8P is also a very good gun, and I know a lot of people like it as well. Aside from the M418 whores (me included) most people use one of these two guns. You can also cheat and use the M16 that you get with the SPECACT DLC since that's unlocked from level 1. Also a very good gun.
Medic: Seriously, the two best LMGs are the first two that you unlock. The PKM is a BEAST with tap-fire, and the M249 is borderline overpowered if you ask me. Don't forget to reload cancel, it cuts the reloads on these guys by 30%+
Engineer: This can be a tough one, because all of the early unlocks are of the "power SMG" variety, and if you prefer the "speed SMG" guns you're kinda screwed (although I personally do VERY well with the XM8c and it's an early unlock). If you are diligent about fire control you can do very well with the 9A-91 at all ranges. Engineer is one of those classes that most people tend to use when leveling as it provides easy exp in repairing, and is AT LEAST average when it comes to anti-infantry work, and the early guns are quite good.
Recon: Not much to say about this, other than DO NOT try to snipe, you will not get any points. Your best bet is to play aggressive using motion mines for assists and points (can be EXTREMELY good exp on maps like Cold War where the "front" is very narrow and fighting confined to a small area that you can cover with a motion mine) and use the pump shotties if you're good with them. Otherwise I would bite the bullet until you unlock at least the T88 and then play aggressive that way. Shitty thing here is that pure sniping won't get you shite for points and you don't get the really good "other" options until you get unlocks like the VSS, SAIGA, and of course the G at level 22.
Aside from that specific advice, the one thing I would say is resist the temptation to focus on what you don't have unlocked because you'll do two things; Build it up so that when you do get them they won't fulfill your expectations, and because it's better to focus on what you DO have and how you can apply it to have fun and help your team win.
Just my 2cp. If you were on PC I would offer to help you, but...

I dunno if it counts, but I love the M1 garand as well. Just an overall good weapon, though you have to watch your ammo.
And yeah, if you just wanna grind points for unlocks, do what rubi said. I'd be more than happy to play with you if you want.

K. Thanks bros!
I'll probably finish off the campaign. I feel it's decent and worth playing. Which is more than what I said for any cod campaign - Don't really see the point to them for some reason.
I'll go online just to mess around with stuff and try to have fun with what the game gives me. I'll ask on Gfaqs maybe when BF3 comes out how fast the level ups are and how precise the controls are... K peace bros.

It just has a steeper learning curve than cod because there's more going on. Unlocks don't matter except magnum ammo really, and even that not a lot. You're just getting frustrated because you don't know the game that well yet. You have to put a few hours in to work out how to play, really. You already worked out that being in a tank is a lot better than not being in a tank. That's a good one to know. Get about 10 more of those nuggets of wisdom and you'll be good to go. As a console player who came from cod, I'll give you one that might help, especially since you've complained about the "precision" or w/e: you probably move around too much whilst shooting and shoot too many bullets too quickly. The increased recoil, increased health and increased engagement distances vs cod mean it's less about getting the most bullets in the right area the fastest. Stopping and aiming, and pacing your shots all help.

Yea, what Rax said. Unless you're using the F2k trying to circle-strafe or whatev will just get you killed.

Once you have some hours into the game and know the basic strategies, leveling a class all the way should not take very long. All the weapons are pretty usable, just pick the one that feels the best and forget about stats. Actually most of the guns feel kind of overly similar to me, but that's just my opinion.
It's easy to be in the mid 20s levelwise, with every class specific gun and perk unlocked long before then, in under 100 hours. Those hours are a conservative estimate, and if you are very points conscious, it will go significantly faster.
I have probably about 300 hours in BF2, and I'm probably ~100 hours from unlocking the last 2 guns if I were to continue on. For us BF2 and BF2142 vets the level up and unlock rates in COD/BC are very generous, as are the weapon handling characteristics.
