No, I'm not asking Den to post them (it'll be a while before Der Riese is available for the PC). I'm posting everything that I've figured out so far, starting with the weapon upgrades.
How the Pack A Punch machine works is that it takes whatever weapon you feed it, chews on it for a couple seconds, and then spits out a BRAND NEW WEAPON. It can upgrade anything from damage (Double Barrel) to clip size (FG42) to total capacity (Browning). Since the upgrades are so random and sometimes counter-intuitive, I figured I'd start a list of what every upgrade does and whether it's worth it. Please add your discoveries and thoughts as you play the map and I'll update this first post to keep it current. Also worth noting- if the base weapon is available on the wall, you can buy ammo for the upgraded version, but it costs 4500 points instead of the normal ammo cost. Since upgrading itself costs 5000, it's almost cheaper to just buy and upgrade a new weapon, instead.
Single Shot Weapons
KAR > Armageddon[/b]
Clip: 8
Reserve: 60
Other features: I guess there's a damage boost... I guess.
Is it Worth It? Hellz to tha no. It's not even a guaranteed one shot kill at round 13, and it's still a bolt action. What a worthless gun.
Colt > (weapon name unknown)[/b]
Capacity: 5
Reserve Ammo: 40
Other features: Fires explosive bullets, much like a Panzershrek, but with a significantly faster RoF and reload speed (as well as the ability to fire 5 shots before reloading).
Is It Worth It? If the damage scales like the Panzer's, then definitely. It's basically like a baby Ray Gun. You even keep it when in last stand, which is awesome.
.357 Magnum > .357 Plus 1 K1L-u[/b]
Clip: 8
Reserve: 80
Other notes: Despite the fact that the gun is named the "I Kill You", it actually kind of sucks. Just a damage upgrade, not not a fantastic one at that (if you want a 1-shot kill weapon, get the Trench Gun). Also, if you have the Ray Gun and the Magnum and you go into last stand, you'll use the Magnum and not the Ray Gun. Lame.
Is it worth it? Absolutely not. Terrible, terrible gun- I'd prefer several UNUPGRADE guns to it.
Double Barrel > (name unknown)[/b]
Capacity: 2
Reserve Ammo: 6
Other features: Despite the fact that the upgraded DB has the word "longrange" in the name, it does NOT get a functional range increase. It might remove the maximum distance at which the pellets disappear, but due to the nature of buckshot, it will not kill enemies any further away. It's pretty much strictly a damage increase.
Is It Worth It? Absolutely *NOT*. No more ammo, no larger clip, no faster reload speed... unless the damage boost is ABSURD (i.e. we're getting 1HKOs into the mid-20s), there's no way this is a worthwhile upgrade.
Trench Gun > Gut Shot[/b]
Capacity: 10
Reserve Ammo: 60
Other Features: Major damage boost- the Gut Shot gets easy 1-shot kills at LEAST to level 21. When you reload, you wind up reloading two shells at a time, which is very handy.
Is It Worth It? You can buy it off the wall, and the "two shells at once" reload means it reloads much quicker, which basically just makes it a much more useful Trench Gun. Outside of owning Dog Rounds, it's also great for windows and still very useful for hallway duty. So far, it's the best upgrade you can buy off the wall (which means buyable ammo).
PTRS > Penetrator
Capacity: 8
Reserve Ammo: 60
Other Notes: Haven't tested this, so is this a strict damage upgrade, or is there a RoF upgrade as well?
Is it worth it? Probably not, except for fun. The PTRS is a 1-shot kill for most of the game, and by the time the PTRS stops 1HKOing, you're in the 20s and it's time get a serious (read: automatic or multi-target) weapon. Would be a lot of fun to line up some multiple kills with, though.
Fully Auto Weapons
MP40 > Afterburner
Capacity: 64
Reserve: 192
Other features: Seems to be strictly a damage upgrade.
Is it worth it? No way- way too little ammo for what you have to pay. The majority of guns you buy off the wall will be better choices. Heck, even the starting pistol would be a better choice.
Type100 > 1001 Samurais
Capacity: 60
Reserve: 220
Other Features: Like the MP40, it seems to be a strict damage upgrade.
Is it worth it? Like the MP40, no way. The ammo supply is pathetic, and the gun is wholly outclassed by several guns you can buy off the wall (the Trench Gun and FG42, for starters).
FG42 > 420 Impeller[/b]
Capacity: 64
Reserve Ammo: 400
Other Features: In addition to the damage upgrade, the FG42 gets one of the best capacity upgrades in the game, although the recoil is a lot more noticeable when you're not reloading every 2 seconds.
Is It Worth It? Yeah, the Impeller chews through zombies extremely well, and reloads a lot quicker than the MG42 or Browning. Probably the second best weapon available off of the wall behind only the Trench Gun/Gut Shot, although I still have a couple more entrants to test.
PPSh > Reaper[/b]
Capacity: 115
Reserve: 700
Other Notes: Haven't played with it much, but I think it's just a damage and ammo upgrade.
Is it worth it? Basically it turns the Reaper into super-fast reloading MG42 with great movement speed. In fact, right now I'd take an upgraded PPSh over an upgraded MG42 (the only major differences are that the MG42 deals slightly more damage per shot, has 10 more bullets per clip, and has 50 more bullets in reserve, while the PPSh deals more damage per second, has a faster RoF, and has significantly better maneuverability). In my opinion, the best fully automatic weapon upgrade.
MG42 > Barracuda[/b]
Capacity: 125
Reserve: 750
Other notes: Two extra clips in reserve, and of course a damage upgrade.
Is it worth it? It's not as dramatic of an upgrade as some (i.e. the Colt, the Trench Gun, the Ray Gun, or the Flamethrower), but the MG42 is one of the best pre-upgrade guns, and either it or the PPSh makes for the best "traditional" (i.e. non K'BOOM or PEWPEWLAZERS) upgraded gun in the game.
Browning > B115 Accelerator[/b]
Capacity: 125
Reserve Ammo: 750
Other Features: Basically the same as the upgraded MG42 with a slower RoF and a slower reload speed (just like the regular browning).
Is it worth it? Sure. It's not flashy, but just like the Browning and MG42 were quality standard guns, the upgraded versions hold up very well against their peers.
Specialty Weapons
Flamethrower > F1W Nitrogen Cooled[/b]
Capacity: Flamethrower
Reserve: Flamethrower
Other Notes: Takes longer to overheat, cools faster, and actually kills zombies! Just like in Shi No Numa, zombies no longer burn until they die, so the days of playing Verruckt or Nacht and just setting a zombie on fire and then moving to the next are over; however, the Flamer got a MASSIVE damage increase per-flame, which means holding the flame on the zombies (as opposed to lighting and moving on) will actually kill at a reasonable speed now.
Is it worth it? I've cooled on the flamer a bit (pun intended). I mean, the fact that you have to keep your stream of fire on the zombies essentially turns it into a fully auto weapon with unlimited ammo... but the other full autos have longer range and kill faster and don't obscure vision. It's a great window gun, but by the later rounds it doesn't have much more use than that.
Panzershrek > Longinus
Capacity: 3
Reserve: 30
Other Notes: yes, you read that right- the upgraded Panzer is a SEMI-AUTO Panzer with a 3-rocket clip size. Upgrading also RADICALLY increases the radius of the blast, as well as greatly reducing the damage the blast does to you (you can stand against a wall and fire a rocket into it and your screen won't even turn red).
Is it worth it? YES! As I said, the blast radius is MASSIVE, and it remains a 1-shot kill. Add in the 3-shot clip and the protection from its damage and the Longinus owns hard. More ammo would certainly be appreciated, but it makes an awesome secondary weapon, and its ammo stretches further than you'd think because, just like with the Waffle, its huge radius ensures you'll be killing 3-4 Zombies a shot (or more). Also, it's the perfect gun to pair with a monkey bomb- monkey bombs serve as a distraction, causing all zombies in the map to cluster around it until it blows up... but the explosive radius is quite small, meaning most of the zombies will survive. Toss a Monkey Bomb and then, after the zombies have clustered, launch a Longinus Rocket into the crowed, however...
Wonder Waffle > Wonder Waffle DG3 JZ[/b]
Clip: 6
Reserve: 30
Other Notes: the projectile turns red after you upgrade, but the arcing electricity remains blue.
Is it worth it? Yes, big-time. Doubles the ammo, but most importantly, doubles the length of time before you must reload. With even more long hallways in Der Reise than in Shi No Numa, the Waffle is even better than it used to be. One of the best guns in the game. Like the Longinus, the total ammo is still on the lowish side, but it goes further than you think thanks to the obscene number of kills per shot.
Ray Gun > Porter's X2 Ray Gun[/b]
Clip: 40
Reserve: 200
Other Notes: Porter's X2 deals less splash damage to you if you get caught in the blast. In fact, you could stand against a wall and fire directly into it and your vision wouldn't even turn red.
Is it worth it? 40 shots per clip is obscene. That ammo lasts forever between reloads. Significantly harder to accidentally kill yourself. Best gun in the game.
