"Following earlier reports and rumors that firing a weapon without a suppressor would flag you on the game's mini-map in Battlefield 3, the game's community manager Ian "Crash7800" Tornay has come out with an official statement to debunk the rumor.
According to DICE, which is developing the upcoming multiplayer-heavy FPS, only spotting will cause you to be flagged or marked on the map. Firing your weapon without a flash suppressor or silencer will not reveal your position to other players on the map—although the muzzle flash will certainly reveal your position visually."
I've heard a rumor that its true only in Rush and Conquest. With all due respect, tha data in the Mini-Map Visibility does not make much sense. Can somebody test this?
You are my bro, bro.

This has to be false, because the whole furore with the silenced weapons was that they made you show on the minimap when they shouldn't have, compared to normal guns.
Unless the unsilenced guns actually don't either, in which case that bug is even more hilarious.

I play rush all the time. And I think conquest does the same too - it does show them on the minimap. I used a mortar and it shows them for a normal amount of time - probably the amount of time they fire their guns (1-2 seconds usually), and there is a notable difference between a true spotted enemy and an enemy revealed by firing. Spotted enemies last longer (around 10 seconds or so), which makes a huge difference when mortaring and knowing the enemy layout.

To my understanding, in BC2 you don't show up on the mini-map if you fire without a silencer/suppressor.
In BF3 however, you will always show up for a second or two if you fire without a muzzle. It doesn't matter what game mode you are playing in. You will always show up.
After reading the new gun stat on the spreadsheet (http://denkirson.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general2&action=display&thread=3222), I am a bit confused. On it, it says some guns(with a suppressor) won't be visible on the mini-map but some will. Can someone who worked on the spreadsheet clarify please. If you will always show up on the mini-map using, in example, A-91 + suppressor, what is the point of the suppressor. I always thought not giving your position away is a decent trade off for bullets unable to travel as far/do more damage, but if the listed guns will always show up on the mini-map doesn't that make a lot of guns + suppressors obsolete?

I just thought of something... maybe the guns + suppressor combo will make you visible on the mini-map for a shorter duration? For example A-91 + suppressor will still make you show up, but instead of being on the map for 2 seconds, you are on the map for 1 now. Can anyone verify?

By experience, when there's suppressed fire, you don't show up at all. The part where you're visible on the map with that silenced gun is basically the list of glitched guns which are supposed to be silenced like any other gun (and therefore, not show up on the map), but do not carry that trait to due to an error.
In other words, it's just a list of bugged guns with glitched suppressor effects.

But then why would somone from dice make a clearly incorrect statement?

I only play conquest and rush and i have noticed that on both if you fire a gun WITHOUT a silencer then you DO show up on the mini map but only for a couple of seconds. SILENCED guns do not show up on the mini map UNLESS a player on your team has seen this other player shooting then the enemy show up on the map for a couple of seconds.

With the incorrect statement, it fits the bill for the beta. In beta, you can fire all day and you wouldn't show up. The actually game however is as we described above, you will be visible if you fire without a suppressor. As nukei explained, certain guns are bugged so even with a suppressor, you'll still appear. It doesn't matter what game mode you are in. I verified this with my roommate not an hour ago. Check the spreadsheet for which guns are suppressor friendly and which aren't.
We need that patch because currently a lot of guns + suppressor is useless!

You can't really blame popping up on the mini-map for this. If you have reasonable knowledge of the map, pay attention to where your damage is coming from, and take a look at the killcam, you can usually figure out where someone was when they killed you.
