Because neither my SPM, K/D or entertainment could bear to max out more than 2 rifles, which is the best semi-auto and which is the best bolt action sniper rifle?

best bolt is still the M98B, and the high damage semis are about equal, except for the ability to raise the roof with the QBU

The L96 is probably the best bolt action for its fast rechamber time and fast bullet speed. Personally, I like M40A5 and M39, but that's more for aesthetics than anything else.

L96 is better than its peers, the SV98 and M40.
M39 EMR has a faster bullet velocity than other semi-autos, MK11 has fastest reload, so it's more of a tossup.
M98 is still the best of the bolt actions for long range, due to suppafast projectile.
SKS is its own beast, some swear by it.
apparently I don't know the dif between it's and its

Close Range: Mk11 (fastest reload time) Medium Range: L96/M40A5 (good mag capacity, quick bolt action) Long Range: M98B (best damage and range, fast projectile)

I am a n00b sniper and I recently started sniping.... however I agree with what "phale" said.
I do not see when / under which conditions semi automatic sniper rifles are good on large maps - because if you can put a 6x zoom on your M16a3, this also takes only a couple of bullets in medium distance (one more?) .... but your not helpless in shorter distances.
Using a sniper rifle means (for me) I have to stay away from the action and operate from distance. Having no clear vision of my surroundings (scope) makes it hard to survive otherwise - so long distance means using L96/m40 or even M98 once you have it unlocked. (straight pull bolt helps a lot)

Yeah I don't get sniper rifles really. Trying to unlock recon now, I just use 870/ump (no val until next levelup (I am a casual disgrace)). Been using the snipers a little bit to do those assignments, ughhhh. The semi autos fire so slow. What's their ttk like one minute. They also come with either a much too magnified 8x scope or an array of the ugliest irons in the game. Bolt actions are a non-starter, at least until they bring back body 1hk. I never won a game by being at least 30m away from everyone at all times. I play best fast and close, neither of which could be described as a sniper rifle trait. Also my irrepressible desire to steamroll the enemy and always win gives me an innate knee-jerk hatred for the 'sniping minigame' engaged in on the big maps, where snipers lie down so far away from anything, the only thing they can hope to hit is other people doing the same thing on the other team. Whenevr one of my squad says they're going to switch to recon to 'take care of those snipers' I tattoo their name on my chest as a reminder of their poverty of character

I found playing a recon funny - to some extend - when - fights are static (Metro conquest - B tactical loitering) when you know exactly when the enemy is showing up somewhere. Simply because people do not know that rushing wont work without smoke. On large maps I am lost.

Yeah sniping is actually extremely helpful on Metro. RU players love thinking that they're all safe hiding in the back of B.

I'm starting to get into sniping. At first I thought it was really worthless compared to the other options, but I have been doing better. The thing to keep in mind is that Dice balanced the sniper rifles around the hard-core elite competitive players. Those guys who would sprint into rooms with sniper rifles and railgun everyone. Sniper rifles have historically been some of the most versatile weapons in FPS games if you have the skill to pull off the twitch dragshots. They are just now starting to take measures in balancing that out. The thing is, 99% of people can't play efficiently in that play style. But when that 1% of players ends up in your lobby, it makes the game feel unbalanced and you pretty much have to use a sniper rifle and be a crack shot as well.
With that in mind, the sniper rifles aren't *too* bad in this game. I've been making a habit out of walking around with a bolt action and just aiming for quick scope body shots as if that would kill them. And once I get the hit I just pistol them down. Most of the time players tend to panic heavily after getting hit and go prone behind cover, allowing me to just walk up on them and lazily hipfire my pistol for an easy kill. If they try to fight back the suppression from your shot is usually enough to make their bullet spread out of control, giving you time to pistol them. The snipers are still viable, you just will be racking up a bunch of kills with pistols is all.

Completely agree natsu, a sniper that is actually good is a tremendous asset. Secondaries like the G18 make you more than viable when you're thrown into CQC. In CQ Metro I love to land a MAV near B so it scans for everyone, and I snipe people in the back. I average 5k points doing this and my team usually wins by a landslide.

I was no hard-core elite player and I'm sure I'm not competitive, but that was the only way I've ever had sniper rifles 'work' for me: 'gamey' abuse and railgunning and all that. That stuff being mentioned, like chokepoint, indoor sniping, I can get into, I'd imagine I could give it a whirl in BF3 too. And I'm certainly no stranger to using my pistol.

I know the stats say that the L96 should have only marginally less drop than an SV-98 but I noticed it seemed closer to the M98B. I haven't had a chance to test it myself but I found this video that confirms what I've seen. I play on PC but this is a PS3 video...

The L96 only has slightly less drop than the SV98. The M98B still outclasses it at range.
