I'm switching from console to PC. Just wondering what most prefer to do with additional buttons on their mouse instead of using the regular keyboard key for. Reloading, switching weapons, going prone etc.

I, uh... I just leave it alone.
Oh, wait! I did map melee to mouse 4 (thumb) because I hated reaching over for V or whatever it's defaulted to. And I do occasionally change speeds on it if I'm driving a tank, but that's basically it.

Depends on the game. For BF3, I use (ignoring M1 + M2 for obvious reasons):
M3 (middle) - grenade M4 (bottom thumb) - flashlight/laser toggle M5 (top thumb) - fire mode toggle
I always use Ctrl for prone and R for reload. They're as natural as Space for jump. Gun controls, and possibly equipping weapons/equipment are all I'd put on the mouse. Mouse buttons are sacred, and should be reserved for something you need quickly and/or often. While I don't use fire mode often, I liberally make use of my laser/flashlight toggle. I try to keep blinding teammates reserved for special purposes, like telling Supports I need ammo. For a game with only two weapons (aka CoD), I'd definitely have switch weapons as a mouse button.
Is it possible to map M-Wheel to something besides weapon switching? I hate scroll selection, and I use the numbers anyway. Although I can't think of anything off the top of my head that I'd put on it. Maybe 3(up) and 4(down), since sometimes in the heat of battle, I'll miss them.

ESDF movement scheme. weird, i know, but hear me out!
- it frees up a fuckton of keys left of your grip - you can easily and quickly find your position due to the little mark most keyboards have on the F key
i have further set up my layout thus that i never have to take my fingers off esdf, exept for entering and exiting vehicles (R) and switching laser/flashlight on/off. however, i use an 11-button mouse (logitech g700) so that might not be possible for everyone.
my layout in detail:
ESDF - movement M3 (middle) - grenade M4 (bottom closer thumb) - OH SH*T!-button (switch to primary weapon when i have something other than it out, switch to pistol if i have primary out, flares/smoke/countermeasures in vehicles) M5 (bottom further thumb) - firemode M6 (top closer thumb) - gadged (medkit, ammobox, ect) M7 (top further thumb) - other gadged! (defibs and such) M8 (closest index finger) - spotting or knife, i'm changing arround yet, not sure what i really want there M9 (middle index finger) - launchers of whatever kind M10 (furtherst index finger) - reload
< (the thingie left of Z) - crouch toggle shift - prone ctrl - sprint
i have all the gadged and launcher stuff doublebound on the F, G, capslock, A, X C and ALT shebang, lots and lots of keys that are unused or double bound.

however, i use an 11-button mouse (logitech g700) so that might not be possible for everyone. That's the mouse I ordered. From the videos I saw the extra buttons on it seem easier to feel/push compared to the G500 because of their size. Your logic for ESDF makes perfect sense, but it would probably be a big adjustment for me because WASD is such a habit! Depends on the game. Switching to primary, secondary and the two gadgets are probably the most important things to map on there. I'm considering using the left/right scroll wheel buttons for gadget 1 and 2 and two of the thumb buttons for primary and secondary. R seems easy enough to reach for while on the move, so I doubt I'll map reload to the mouse. Regarding the scroll wheel, I was thinking the same thing. I'd rather have the up/down act as 2 buttons. Eg: scrolling downward to switch to pistol, scrolling upward to switch to primary.

Totally forgot I had a Logitech G13 in my closet. There's a story behind this thing lol. A year ago I ordered a $10 logitech gamepad from BestBuy via in store pickup. When I was walking back to my truck with the bag I noticed it felt kinda heavy, I looked inside and it was a logitech g13. It was worth around $100 at the time.
The main usefulness I see from this over a keyboard is that my left thumb has easy access to 3 buttons and a D-Pad/Stick. I will probably stick with the keyboard though and maybe give this a go later for giggles.

Normally I'd feel bad about something like that, but it's Best Buy. They're terrible. Only place that's worse is Walmart. when i do play PC, i always try to map fire to the mouse wheel, so i can get an artificially high semi-auto fire rate I didn't know people still did this. I can shoot semi-autos pretty fast on my own, and I got banned from many CoD servers for it. They all thought I was using mouse wheel or macros, until one server had a plugin that checked for both. I laughed when the admin came on and said I was clean, then continued to G3-spam the people who were crying. But BF3 has some really low fire rate caps for semi-autos, so it screws me up. I can only dream of how nice the M9/443/G17, or even the Rex/.44 would be with a high cap...

Well demize said the caps are being increased for some of the pistols and the 'jamming' bug that slows fire will be fixed as well, in the next patch. it's a good time to be a pistol wielding badass

Wonder if the SKS and the other semis will feel different (hopefully faster)
A fast semi auto with a red dot / holo would be pretty awesome and fun to use

I have mouse wheel up to Toggle Primary which will flip flop between main weapon and sidearm. Mouse wheel down is reload.

I have a g500. Button 3 is crouch, 4 is reload and 10 is prone. Those are the three buttons on the left side. In find this easier than using them on the keyboard.
Would love to remap the scroll wheel but haven't seen how.

I have mouse wheel up to Toggle Primary which will flip flop between main weapon and sidearm. Mouse wheel down is reload. I experimented quite a bit trying to use the mouse wheel to melee (up) and reload (down). Found it more trouble than it was worth, though; when I melee'd by pushing the wheel forward, I would invariably pull the wheel backwards as I returned my finger to it's original position, resulting in an unwanted reload (and shortly afterwards, my death). What did work for me was assigning sprint to M3 (pressing wheel down).
