Heyo, Tribes Ascend, currently in "closed" beta, is available for all who "like" them on Facebook. That gives you a key (don't worry, you can tell it not to post on your wall/block it afterwards as well) and then all you have to do is download it. It is a F2P shooter with a lot of old school mechanics. PC veterans will know Tribes I however do not, as I was mostly console before BF3. Anyway, was playing with a friend and I think I am starting to enjoy it a great deal. The system that they currently have in place is you buy ANYTHING, you get free 1.5x XP for life, not bad. You can also buy passes ala MW3 (I think) to get double xp, and most every upgrade that I have seen can be bought. However, looks like everything can also be earned, and I believe that this closed beta will NOT reset your xp, though I could be wrong. Sorry for punctuation, capitalization, and spelling mistakes (I'm tired), but any other bros playing this one or have interest in this one?

Game runs somewhat okay on low settings for me, though I gotta go windowed to get a low enough resolution without stretching the image to fill my widescreen monitor. heh I did the target practice tutorial and just dicked around for a while. Man it felt good to fire a spinfusor again. Nervous about going online, though. I know I will get completely and totally destroyed in 5 seconds flat... >,> I don't think I stand a chance in hell right now. lol
Note: There was only very shallow water in that level, but I did notice that the discs did not skip across the water. ;-(
Still, looks fun, though I miss some of the Tribes 2 gadget and stuff. I think literally my only complaint about that game was that vehicles were a and a half to drive, pretty much everything else was amazing IMO. Tempted to reinstall it. heh heh

If you think you'll get pooped on online, try it. I can get about a 1:1 K/D with NO background in twitch/movement shooters. Try heavy, picking battles in closed areas (center of the maps usually have a structure that you can lob mortars from and dominate close range). I have to unlock all of the classes, anyone have a suggestion as to which one I should unlock first?

Played my first match. I REEALLLY need a video card. I have to run the game in 800x600 in a window (because there are no widescreen resolutions lower than 720p) and still don't get a great framerate... but it's marginally playable.
I'm pretty ass. lol I spent my 250 gold on the spinfusor for the soldier class. I just had to have it even if I'm gonna suck with it.
I managed to kill 5 people and only die 3 times, though I don't think I helped my team much. Hell I prolly would have only died once if I could have figured out where to go to get ammo and/or health in time without running into the dudes nuking our generator. lol (I did make things a little tougher for them while I was down there and suicide grenaded one of them to death. heh)
Anyway... I can see this becoming massively fun and addicting, but I really do need an upgrade before I can play seriously. Though I might play some on the side even with the crappiness of my vid card. Especially if I can find any way to dumb down the graphics enough to eek out some more FPS.
I think I better focus on defense and try to learn the layouts of my own bases before really doing anything offensive. heh
PS. Yes I saw all the icons on the hud but when the shiz is inside buildings it's kinda hard to tell which entrance you gotta go in and how to get to things once inside. Just gotta learn it by playing or go open the maps in training and roam around... which I might do.

Found some help tweaking the ini file and made a HUGE difference, plus let me set custom resolution so I can play fullscreen... YAY!
I'm still pretty suck, but this game is pretty damn cool, and I haven't been pwned like I thought I would. (Though I've mostly been playing it pretty safe and doubt I've really contributed much to my teams, though I did defend and repair our generator in the last game.)

I'm still pretty suck, but this game is pretty gosh darn golly gee whiz cool, and I haven't been pwned like I thought I would. (Though I've mostly been playing it pretty safe and doubt I've really contributed much to my teams, though I did defend and repair our generator in the last game.) Pretty much that. I heard about this game a while ago, but only started playing in the past few weeks. Never played a Tribes game before, so after hearing how "elite" it's supposed to be, I was kind of scared of getting into it. It really isn't that bad, and it reminds me of a more fast paced UT. It's really fun, and I can usually rambo freely since I can jet the hell out of dodge at high speeds (except on heavy classes, I hate them so much). I love how the music changes when you're carrying the flag, and how half the enemy team is trying to gun you down. Really tense, in a good way. This game pretty much mandates gold purchase. Maybe not a lot, but some classes really need a better weapon. For example I'd never want to play Soldier without Spinfusor, Infiltrator without Stealth Spinfusor, or Technician without Thumper. This game is way too fast paced for non-hitscan rifles, SMGs, etc. Plus half the pistols are hitscan (or at least really, really fast projectiles), and even outdamage the automatic weapons. Here are some tips from someone who doesn't really know what he's talking about: -Outside of the weapons mentioned above, I'd seriously recommend not buying anything until you're sure you know what you want. Some things may look shiny and good in theory, but they aren't worth it. -Don't focus on spending all your XP on a single class, unless it's a decent all-rounder. You may think you like a class now, but after spending all your time and XP on it, you may find it doesn't meet your expectations. Better to play with everything, until you have a good idea of what you want to do. - XP/Gold is best spent on classes and perks (or whatever they're called here) in the beginning. The default classes are all good, but there are a few fun ones that are locked. Perks are global, so it's never a wasted purchase. -Never play Sentinel, ever. I mean it. If you're expecting a sniper, prepare to be sorely disappointed. -If you're not sure what to upgrade, your class armor is always a safe bet. -Don't forget about your packs(powers) and belts(grenades). I see a lot of people who never use them. Grenades are pretty powerful, and some classes are downright scary when they use their packs correctly. -And finally, the most obvious of all...don't ski uphill.

Downloaded... turns out my video card does not support alpha blending with floating point render targets, which is [apparently] required to run the game. No Tribes for me, I suppose. Oh well.
Edit: turns out I just have a shitty PC that can't play on "very low" settings. More incentive to upgrade, I suppose.

It may simply be required by one of the features the game has turned on be default. There's a lot of stuff I had to edit the ini to turn off. Though with the recent patch they moved some settings to server side so I don't know if that works anymore. If it forces me to run on default settings then the game will be unplayable for me again. ;-( I found a version of the ini that was edited to pretty much minimum graphics settings online and based my changes on that. I think I just searched for Tribes Ascend tweaks or something. Also it is the tribes.ini file and it's in your documents folder, not where the game is installed. Worth a shot, anyway. didjeridu I played some Tribes 2 back in the day, though I am by no means a tribes veteran. I don't think I'd say never ski uphill. Obviously you want to ski downhill as much as possible to gain momentum so you should be landing your jumps on the far slope near the top, but there are times when it is appropriate to ski uphill, or rather to ski/jetpack uphill, it will still slow you down, but not as badly with the jetpack going, and it converts forward momentum into vertical so you can literally use hills like ramps and that can have it's uses. I think the game definitely has a high skill margin, but unlike CS it's more survivable. So it's a lot easier for new players since you can just pick up and gogogo if you're in a rough spot. The more skilled players are still going to be contributing more to the team especially if they are skilled enough to hit targets at long distance, and midair, but you aren't just automatically dead in 30 seconds if you aren't top tier in this game, which is very nice.

Eh, it was mostly a joke. I've tried to ski uphill to do some u-turns, and it worked okay.
The great thing about this game is there's plenty to do that doesn't involve being a god at projectiles/flying/skiing/etc. You can spend all day in your base as a Technician and accomplish a lot, and even the heavy classes can sit around planting mines and forcefields, and even body blocking the flag. And then there's my personal favorite: being that dick Infiltrator who never leaves the enemy base. I can hit people fine with a disc or two, but I'm pretty bad at actually killing them. I can run for my life with the flag as a Pathfinder, but I don't have the skills to evade the better enemy chasers. Being more support oriented is more my thing, at least for this game. I'd rather defend/harass and gradually get better at killing than just throw myself at it and hope for the best (which is what I do for most other games, heh).
I think the most surprising thing I've found about Ascend is how friendly the players are. I've yet to meet your typical FPS player. The worst thing you'll ever come across is:

BTW my Tribes name is "mannonc" if any bros want to friend up. Be forewarned, I'm still a newb.
tl;dr Yeah I like the community, though still don't see as much common courtesy as in the old TFC days. Have mostly played jug in defense, but I <3 spinfusor!! Some other successes. Really recommend spectating some! There's so much to learn!
lol Yeah I haven't met with any real dickheaddedness.
I think the only thing that's really annoyed me so far (other than joining midgame into a team that is already being pwned so hard there's nothing I can do) is people definitely will ninja the flag return on you. I'm kinda of the mind that if I kill the flag carrier, am like 2 meters from the flag, and there's no enemies anywhere nearby to grab it, I should be allowed to return it as well. But your teammates WILL ninja that flag everytime. Still, it's not that big a deal, though it does make me wonder where the old days of common courtesy have gone. I remember playing TFC and if you got the enemy flag and carried it 50% to 75% of the way back then died, whomever picked it up and brought it the rest of the way would very often just drop it in front of the flag for you to cap it. I myself did that routinely and greatly disliked servers that did not observe this unwritten rule. And that was when there was no persistent XP rewards. Oh well. Of course I've also not gotten on voice with anybody, which admittedly is where 90% of the douchebagery happens on xbox.
I'm having a TON of fun playing.
So far I've honestly spent the majority of my time as a Jug defending. In fact in most games hearing that our generator has been destroyed is like $$! to me because it usually means 1 or 2 easy kills and loads of points repairing it. ;3 Unless it's an enemy jugg down there in which case it means a long protracted duel, but one where I have the respawn advantage if necessary. Generally speaking I've held my own at duels inside the base. I even spent one game on defense as a pathfinder (thought I'd try to ninja repair all the turrets that were down) and dropped right into the middle of two guys down there and still managed to kill them both with my light spinfusor. Then a jugg dropped down and I swear I nearly killed him too. lol Like just one more shot! But I kept getting hung up on the walls and crap. ;-( I think the biggest threat to me indoors is accidentally killing myself either with a snap spinfusor shot a little too close or falling in damn holes as a jug and not having the energy to get out. I hate that. get hungup on one little thing and you can about guarantee you won't make it. That's okay, though. A few suicides are no big deal. I know that I'll stop doing that the better I get.
Indoors I'm pretty good with a spinfusor. It's basically a slow firing quake rocket launcher and I have tons of experience aiming at floors, walls, ceilings and trying to predict targets movements. Though they aren't really fast enough to juggle people like you could in Quake or TFC.
Spinfusor is by far my fav weapon. heh I spend more time using it than the big gun with my jugg too, and I've only used the assault rifle on my Soldier in one game... didn't like it much. ;p
I'm kinda rubbish at anything long distance out in the rolling hills vs moving targets, though. I dunno why I just have a very hard time deciding exactly where they will land and ski, and getting the timing is quite tricky. Also when I'm moving vertically my aim is terrible as I've not got the knack for compensating for that. I have, however, had some pretty decent success hunting down flag grabbers as a soldier on that map with the two ships. Usually I was able to pound them as they got the flag then just chase them down and get one lucky shot on them. Hell I even had the BEST rejection ever on one guy I followed all the way back then I skijumped up onto the ship just above his flag and blue plate specialed his ass as he was jetting up to it. I think that's the only blue plate I've gotten. ;3 My only regret was that I was too focused on dropping down to return our flag. I shoulda grabbed theirs too. heh Though I did score on them as a soldier, which was slightly hilarious because my skiing really isn't that great.
As for flag grabbing... I've had mixed success with that. Generally speaking I'm not too good at it. I've noticed that my success generally depends on whether I manage to get their flag at speed or if I cock that up. I think I have capped a flag I picked up slow, but only once. If I grab it at speed and take off usually I'm able to get out of their heavily defended area and get off to the races. As a soldier I get chased down often, though sometimes I can fight it out as long as I don't waste all my energy. As a pathfinder I usually don't even bother shooting, just ski and jet and try to dodge shit and not be totally predictable. Unless they're really on the ball that usually works, though you just have to hope your flag is at home when you scream in with the whole enemy team on your ass. ;p
You know I haven't really done much in the way of u-turns but I have done essentially the same thing on large hills to effect 90 degree turns, mostly to just ski around in a patrol or some such, though I dunno why I bother because I rarely accomplish anything like that. Generally I'm most effective defending/repairing the generator and turrets (and the flag if the generator stays up), chasing flag grabbers if I'm not jugg, or flat out stealing their flag, none of which really works too well with patrolling and making a high speed pass around their base that doesn't grab the flag generally seems pointless. (Though I suppose it could be a distraction.)
I recommend spectating some. I did that the other night and it's pretty fascinating to see what other players are doing. In particular try out holding R and clicking to switch to the fastest player. I came across a guy playing a pathfinder on katabatic that definitely knew his shizz. I dunno why, but until I saw him playing it never occurred to me to grenade jump in Tribes: Ascend. O,o lol That dude would grenade ski up a hill to catch MAJOR air, fly over a mountain and come down on the far slope, maneuver a bit, ski through the enemy flag and head back, then use grenades and spinfusor shots to launch himself up another slope to fly over another mountain on the way back and cap the flag with just as much speed as he stole it. Yeeeahhhh okay... I've got a LOT to learn. lol

Nice montage, though you know it's edited out of n+ hours of actual game time. He doesn't really even try to hide it as he did leave in some whiffed shots here and there. Still... lotta skill there. I don't even try to hit people in the air 90% of the time as it's just a waste of ammo for me and my spinfusor. ;p
I do have a question... Is that bolt caster thingy actually better or worse for air shots? I believe the shots fall in a bit of an arc, though not as much as the thumper. But they also look like they travel faster than spinfusor shots to me, which seems like that would outweigh the cons of the slight arc for moving, mid air targets.
Not that I'll have enough XP to buy the thing anytime ohhh... this friggin year.... *groan* Some of the stuff in this game is way too expensive. I know they want there to be an incentive to buy gold but weapons costing 100K just seems excessive. I did finally purchase some classes and I can see myself eventually saving up enough for the perks and stuff, but right now I really can't envision grinding through 100K XP. I think I'll probably wind up buying all the classes and basic upgrades and a few perks and then we'll just see. I may just lose interest before I manage to grind my way through 100K XP.
Which is a shame given how important some of the weapons are. Some are pretty strait up better than the default weapons, and practically a necessity, yet the cheapest ones are still like 42,000. O,o

I know it's a montage. Take out the kills even and any time I played a Pathfinder just looks like an embarrassment. And I don't really want to be bothered with speccing myself for self damage and going through all that trouble, so I'll just leave it to the pros. Plus I've moved on to Soldier anyway. The way I see it, he's just a slower, beefier Pathfinder. His Spinfuser is great, and I love the health and grenades from the Utility(?) pack. And extra AP grenades are just so devastating. Aside from the stray Tactical Strike, all my multi-kills come from AP grenades. As for Pathfinder weapons, it doesn't matter in the long run since they're crap when it comes to fighting. The Bolt Launcher is better for close combat and indoors, and the Light Spinfusor for everything else. But really, if you're not the type to abuse self damage for speed boosts, you can pick either. The Bolt is barely stronger, and I've never noticed a real RoF difference. Neither is strong enough to one shot an enemy at full health, so only go Bolt if you're comfortable with arcing and spending the XP/Gold. I don't think it's worth it. But yeah, the XP required in this game is ridiculous. I have the VIP boost, and it's still bad. I can't imagine what default XP gain is like. Out of curiousty, what's the average XP people around here get per match? Ignoring those random achievement thingies, I usually get 3-4k. I don't think that's very good, but I could be doing worse. I don't really kill people, and I just try to defend or harass.

I'd love to get 3K per match. Usually I get less than 1K unless I have a really great game or get a first win bonus or something. Just getting 400 to 700 XP is fairly common. Though, hopefully it will get better as I get better...

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure what counts towards XP in the first place. I always try to do a little bit of everything each match; bum rush the enemy turrets, radar, and generator at the start as Raider, do a little Technician or Doombringer defense, upgrade base defenses, then maybe some harassment with Soldier or Juggernaut if I have time. Doing all that gets me loads of credits, but I have no idea what counts in the end. I also get tons of assists. Either way, I feel like I get loads of XP for no reason when I'm screwing around, yet when I actually try to dedicate myself I'll get 1k or less.
I've also come to the conclusion that Soldier, Raider, Juggernaut, and Technician are the only classes I like to play. I don't even like Tech really, but when playing one I feel like I'm always doing something productive, so that helps. Soldier and Raider have their obvious uses, but Juggernaut is just so nasty. I love me some Fusion Mortar, Quick Draw LMG, and throwing Discs. That class has everything...except speed.

Anyone still play this game? I LOVE it, it's so different from other shooters. I usually roll Doombringer as a Heavy on Flag (I've got every upgrade and unlock for that class ). I like the Heavy Bolt Launcher; while it's technically a crappy heavy spinfusor (and the heavy spinfusor isnt too overwhelming itself), I can still block flag cappers plus the bolt launcher is a much, much better weapon indoors (so I can defend both the flag as well as the gen room) If you're interested in playing this, I recommend the 23 dollar pack that gives you 2000+ gold as well as a 30 day booster. With the booster you gain 300% of normal XP and a permanent 150% boost so those unlocks come rolling in I'm hearing the Brute is most likely the next class to be updated, so I'm saving my XP. I rolled Brute at the start but he's just a soldier that acts like a bad bullet sponge.

I love the game, but don't get to play it much lately. I'm not spending any money on it either so the XP is REAL slow... ;-( Kinda frustrating that, especially when most pub games result in one team or the other roflstomping the opposite and really the only thing you can do about it is get lucky and pick the winning team at the start.
That's actually something I think that needs to change. I don't mind at all if I'm playing with people much more skilled and organized than I am, in fact I really like it. But, only when they are spread across both teams. Even if you're on the winning team if it's just a complete pwnage it's not even fun. You can literally just stand on your flag and do nothing to help your team and earn an easy win.
I hate that. It makes most games alternatively either really boring or really frustrating. Even if my team looses and the score isn't even close I LOVE when we actually get a good fight with lots of back and forth going on.
I played one game that was super frustrating because we kept getting their flag over and over and over way more times than they actually got ours, but every time we did we couldn't cap it because nobody could catch the 1 pathfinder doing laps around the map. lol I gotta admire his skill... and upgrades... I can't do that even if I had his skill because I haven't got them... -_- But, still... It was kinda BS.
Anyway... It's just hard for me to get into the game right now because it feels like no matter what I do I can't actually make any significant contribution. About the only thing that does consistently work for me is gen room defense, but even then there's usually too many people doing that as is. I know I just need more practice and more unlocks, but when only 20% of the games I play are actually fun I don't feel like dicking with it. ;p
Hopefully now I'll find some cool servers now that those are in, though.

Yeah, my bets are on Brute too. As it is now, the Brute is only good at two things: shooting base defenses at long range, and crapping Fractals. Just be prepared for the initial unlocks to be OP, like the Jackal and Plasma. I think they do it on purpose, just to promote gold sales. /conspiracy
I've found out that a big factor in XP per match is the length of the game. Most of the games I play are pretty long, so I guess that helps. I can't remember if kills matter, but your position on the scoreboard does, and you get a modest boost for victory.

Base XP is defined purely by match length. Bonus is based on wether you win (+25%) and your placing inside your team (1st place +25%, 2nd place +24% etc.). So placing 1st and winning nets a total bonus of +50%.
The resulting value then gets a 1.5 multiplier if you are VIP.
