To avoid derailing the bro names thread I just made a new one. Will keep a lookout for you mannon. How's your PC performing with Firefall? Well... better than I had hoped... that is with nearly everything turned off, running in 720p, with dynamic resolution down to 50%, the framerate is playable. Sure, the game is ugly as sin, but it runs. I'm having some rather frustrating technical problems, however. The game keeps randomly dropping me to my desktop. There's no warning, nothing going on in the background, no accidental keypress or anything just running around doing my thing then about a second of black and poof I'm on my desktop. Then I gotta multitask back into the game and by then I'm already dead. Very frustrating. I also got ambushed by some mean dudes when I was trying to do the newbie mine corbite quest thing and as soon as they attacked I got a massive FPS lag spike for like 5 seconds. I think I was able to jump and shoot once then just died... Yay gotta glide back to the quest area again! grr... I dunno... This seems pretty cool in theory, but so far between the game not being particularly newbie friendly and the technical issues I've yet to have fun for more than about a minute and a half before my next frustration. I'll keep at it because the game shows promise, but at this point I'd honestly rather be playing tribes, which... BTW both runs and looks better on my computer as well. ;3 But then Tribes is also much further along in it's beta and is not an MMO at all, so I'm not really comparing them. I think I need to do a lot of research before I really go back into FF. Mebbe if I have a better idea what I'm doing the game won't be so frustrating. The newbie tutorial missions are honestly, not that helpful, and kinda buggy, at this point.

Yeah, Copaabana is a confusing place for a newcomer. The tutorial mission is better than nothing but not much. It takes time to learn which vendor sells what, and the manufacturing process is pretty opaque, but stick with it, you can really get immersed.
I'm in far too deep!

So far I'm just wandering around shooting stuff doing the missions. I'm not even attempting to buy or manufacture anything as I have no Earthly idea what would be good things to spend my resources and money on yet.
I'm also wondering if all the classes are really much use in PvE given that enemies tend to attack in sort of horde waves and overrun you. Doesn't seem like sniping would be too useful outside of PvP and medic and engineer seem like they'd only be useful for thumping with squads and not much at all for solo. I dunno... I've yet to try anything. I figured Assault is probably the basic class and I should get a handle on that first.
Is there any way to increase your jetpack energy? It's so useful for keeping your butt alive, but it runs out FAST and then you're SOL. Have the same problem in Tribes, but that's because most players have all the fancy upgrades I don't have yet. heh

It's so useful for keeping your butt alive, but it runs out FAST and then you're SOL. Assault is definately the most fun class for soloing around in PvE, IMO ;D The basic Plasma Cannon deals out 575 damage for a direct hit, but more importantly has an Area of Effect over which bugs sustain lesser blast damage. So give a horde a couple of shots and you will be dropping several at once. Also, the Crater ability is awesome; to pass the time whils I am refining stuff, I head on down to the beach, pop a lot of the nest sac spawn thingys and let the bugs accumulate. Once there are plenty, I stand still in the middle of them for as long as my health can take it, jet up and then unleash Crater (key 1 default). Results awesome. You aloso get Shockwave at level 11, worth waiting for. I'll post screenshots later. You can add jet boost modules and energy efficiency modules to higher level frames.

Does crater do more damage the higher you are when you use it?

Up to a point, yes. But there is a maximum.
I did try jumping off some insanely high cliffs and cratering, but no increase in damage beyond around 1300 ish. Awesome ability though.
Just wait until you get to Assault rank 11; you can then have Crater, Afterburner and Shockwave.
Afterburner you get at rank 7, if I remember correctly, and is great for making a sharp exit when things start to go wrong (or for rushing over to revive someone).
And Shockwave sends out a huge pulse of damaging energy in front of you, does 800 damage and pushes enemies back - very useful for clearing bugs from thumpers.
I've got to rank 12 now, and have some pretty useful kit. My plasma now does 712 damage or thereabouts for a direct hit, and does 422 for a near miss (from blast damage, which does drop off). As a lot of the smaller bugs have just 400 HP, this is just great for PvE; pure slaughter at times!
And I picked up a purple assault rifle with 2 module slots. The rifle came with 20% critical bonus, on top of the usual 50% for headshots, and I've added a Crit weapon module to add another 10% to that. Also added reduced reload module. Adding modules also increase the overall power of the gun so that it now does 52 damage per round, up from 47 before adding the modules. It's not called an Omnidevastator for nothing!
If you need any help with how the various modules and manufacturing works, just ask. I've finally got to the stage where I know what I am doing (I think).

I did start building some stuff. Basically still just doing noobie missions and such. I built some random equipment that I had the schematics for... probably looted those. I got a very slightly better thing (don't think it's the armor...) for Assault and was temporarily annoyed that I lost crater, but then I found you can just buy a crater schem pretty cheap and make one. No prob.
My current predicament is getting into thumping... Basically I ran around with the noobie hammer she gave me and I think the best I found was 3.75% or so... I dunno. It was some low number but it was nonzero so I figured... fuck it I'll call the thumper here.
I hung in for a bit but got overwhelmed and had to recall it. I died, but luckily I got the recall off first so the thumper got away.
Then I figured I'd try as an Engineer. Also I had to thump in the same low % area because my hammer was gone.
My first Engi thump was a total fail because I put my turret too far away and it didn't do dick. lol I returned the thumper with hardly any gain, but at least I didn't die.
Next Engi thump I put the turret more or less right next to it. I helped support mostly by repairing the thumper and sometimes turret, and every now and then killing off some bugs in the blind spot behind the thumper, or that were coming after mee.
I actually thumped a good long time that way, which was awesome. I was able to hold off way more bugs than I did with assault since I had the turret for backup keeping them off my back, and repairing was holding the thumper at 50% for quite a while.
That was... until that big rollypolly mofo came up. I was okay for a while, mostly repairing the turret and trying to avoid his big attacks. But I screwed up and he clipped through the thumper, and then I got killed trying to get close so I could return it and lost everything.
Problem is... that was my last thumper and I only got about 80 coralite... So I can't do the thumper/hammer research thing.
I made some sonic grenades, but I've not yet found any coralite nodes... ;-(

I should say.... This game is getting interesting and fun, but also remains extremely frustrating. Yesterday I was also unable to go into first person. The cam mode button just wasn't working. Luckily I don't generally play in first person anyway, just because you need the situational awareness for rock jumping and making sure your ankles don't get nibbled on. But still...
I hope they have a lot of time before this launches, because it's still quite buggy. And the tranny vendors are disturbing. ;3

YAY! I had my best run in the game yet. Turns out getting unscrewed wasn't quite so horrible. I just had to get some advice. (Go east from Copacabana base.) And I found me enough rocks to get my 100 coralite with sonic... uhh... grenades... Whatever they're called. lol
For some reason I can never remember what shiz is called in FireFall. Probably because this is one of the few times I've just dove into a game without doing lots of reading and such, I'm just sorta figuring it out as I go because I don't have a lot of time to give to it and I'd rather be playing than reading.
Anyway I got that done and got me tiny thumpers and hammer and ran off to do the second half of the mission to get minerals.
I have to say, however, that the first part of that was a big fat fail. Not because I didn't find minerals, or died, or lost my thumper. Nope... I went Engineer and I think I found a 12%ish spot and thumpered there with an upgraded turret and it was easy peasy. Hell some Chosen even showed up and they didn't even threaten me. (Usually I gotta engage Chosen 1 or 2 at a time or get pwned.) The problem was that I didn't realize that it wouldn't count ANY of the minerals towards the mission simply because I went outside the SIN network around Copacabana. ;-(
So I had to go find a spot to mine that was within the SIN network. I did and thumpered just as successfully. Then another dude came along and thumpered and rather than getting upset (because I still had to get more) I helped. After his was done I did mine and without even talking we just traded off on tiny thumpers and both helped out each time for a while. It wasn't exactly a social experience since I don't think he said anything, but it was cool that something like that just came up dynamically, without us even forming a squad or anything.
After that I didn't have any missions so I spent a little time experimenting with recon. I don't see recon beeing terribly useful for solo vs the critters aka thumping and such, but it seemed to work pretty well vs Chosen at extreme range. Only problem there was I ran totally out of ammo quickly since I wasn't able to pickup drops. ;-( I'm not sure how to work that out. It would work with small patrols you can finish off then go pickup the ammo, but then again stuff doesn't seem to last very long on the ground and against a larger force there's no way I could kill them all off without being much higher level and having a much better gun.
Still, it was neat. I found something I can do with Recon other than PvP, and Engineer actually worked quite well for thumping. Still not sure I can make medic work for PvE, but I haven't even tried. I suppose if you can heal yourself you can basically tank or something, though.

One thing that I liek is the way that people seem to just randomly help out. I'm quite hapopy to join in the slaughter and helop to protect someone's thumper. And I am certainly happy if someone turns up to help me, especially if I am running a Light Thumper. I've also occasionally joined a squad to run the Light Thumper. Even though you get less resources (they are shared), the teamwork is pretty good and having several people spread out helps with prospecting. Been keen to get XP lately o have been shamelessly farming bugs for their XP. Down on the beach below Copa is a great spot for this, as long as no one else is around - I wouldn't want to mess up someone's Kill 20 Aranhas mission by stealing them all. Also been luring out massive hordes to slaughter by running the light thmper on top of the plateau above the "bone bridge" to the North of Copa - even if there are no resources there - totally ridiculous numbers of bugs accumulate in certain spots, making for some VERY satisfying multikills with Plasma. Soloing the Tiny hasd become a bit routine as a level 14 Assault, but have yet to Solo the light - got to 98% recently but chickened out becouse the rollmop had my thumper down to Critical health. I can usually run it to 50% -60% without too much bother, btu occasionally one of those explosive Aranhas sneaks in and blows my face off - then I have the indignity of watching my thumper get destroyed as I waitin vain to be revived -costs 417 coralite to replace a "Light" I don't play recon because my highish ping makes trying to shoot a moving target misery. Didn't really take to Engineer as I don't like being tied to a turret - much prefer to roam around looking for trouble! I do like to play Medic, but there is little need for a Medic in PvE, unless there is a major battle with the Chosen going on. And people can get healed in so many ways: Bug health drops lol, Engineer repair stations, Regen battleframe (mine heals at the rate of 20HP/sec), health drop calldowns and health power up points. Dread I shoudl give a try though; great for shooting the face off the larger bugs and for gunning down mosquitoes. I may give Dread, Medic or Engi a serious try once I've topped out to 15 on Assault. Grenade launcher would be my secondary weapon of choice. I use a Purple Assault Rifle with my Assault though; does 53 damage for body, and 91 for a headshot - so good that I can literally just stand in front of a terrorclaw and shoot it's face off before it can kill me. What time do you play? If you let me know, I'll try to keep my eyes open for you. 2 bros would stand a great chance of being able to handle a Light Thumper without assistance ;D

I'd really like to form a squad with some Bros. I normally play between about 0600 and 0730 or 2300 onwards, UK time.
Had an absolute blast this last half hour - just managed to solo my first Light Thumper. Awesome action. YeeHaw!

I'd love to play with bros!
I haven't hit anything like a regular schedule though. Generally when I do get to play it's around afternoon or very late at night US Central Standard Time. Feel free to add me as a friend in game... if there is a way. ;3 I'm sure there is, though I have no idea if it requires people to be online or what... I'm still very much a noob.

Also... You should give Engineer a go. You aren't tied to the turret as much as you might think because the cooldown doesn't last all that long and then you can just pop another one. You don't have to pick it back up.
In fact I have many times popped a turret just to deal with a few mobs than tootled off on my own and left it. In fact there are places you can just leave one to get you basically a stead stream of effortless XP. ;3 I'm sure they'll nerf that at some point. I saw a turret just picking off chosen in a spot when I was goofing with Recon.

Tsk Tsk not been AFK farming, have we? I have just been shamelessly exploiting the rock outcrops to the N of Copa, by the bone bridge. I'm keen to reach rank 15 so I'm doing this for the XP, even if there are no resources there. I think that I will give engi another try. I'll look like Shakira in her asymmetric leotard though!

Actually I haven't afk farmed, though I'm fairly certain I've seen some people's afk turrets. Though it strikes me that you could also use a turret like that to farm while you're off manufacturing or whotnot. I figure eventually they'll nerf it so that your turret powers down if you get too far away or something like that.
Unless you get it in a really good spot your turret alone isn't going to exactly rake in the XP, though, and personally I'm not gonna leave this running afk all day. (Though I'm sure plenty of other people would.)
I might have to try out the rocks. Though so far I've not really cared too much about what level I am. Mostly just learning the game bit by bit and trying to not get pwned.
And yeah... I don't really dig the half clothed look. heh. Honestly I really wish they'd give us some ability to change our look. It doesn't have to be a full on outfit system like MMORPG's usually do, but at least some alternate skins. Mebbe charge for alternate skins like Tribes is doing. If I had to guess I'd say they probably will do that at some point, but it's just too early in beta and they have bigger fish to fry.

Sweet, I might actually try the game again. I didn't care about the PvP at all and it hurt the balance of PvE, that was my biggest beef with the game.
