If you have never tried XCOM, it is a game very much worth trying, even if the turn-based genre sounds like a turn-off. Last year's XCOM Enemy Unknown was a great rebirth of the original 1990s XCOM, and this month's XCOM Enemy Within DLC adds even more to XCOM Enemy Unknown, and makes it a VERY fun game. Highly recommended. I don't know if DLC can count for game-of-the-year, but the XCOM DLC makes me want to vote XCOM game-of-the-year again, a second time.
On a side note, play the game on Ironman mode, no matter what difficulty you play it on. Having the chance of perma-death for one of your soldiers makes the game extra fun, seriously. You can name all the soldiers after friends, family, and co-workers, and try hard to keep them alive. You can customize their looks to look like people you know, to give an added personalized touch and fun to the game.

i bought enemy within weeks ago but haven't gotten around to trying it yet i loved the original xcom way back when, and the 2011 remake too, even though i was a bit mad about some of the things streamlined/consolized away (like base assaults and an inventory system), but it's still great my first ironman-impossible squad was aliens-themed. had a heavy named Vasquez, the leader was gorman, a support named hicks, and so on. naturally, hudson was the first to panic at a critical moment, causing a chain reaction that doomed the entire squad and thus the playthrough. and yes, i did my duty and yelled "gamer over man, game over!" when it happened.
