For the longest time I'd wanted a game that did literally everything, but no concept of any lineation was attached in my childish mind. Now I've grown and thought, and all I know now is that I don't know enough. As soon as I learned about procedural generation I immediately thought that this was it, it was the quantum leap that I wanted. All the games of Cryptic Sea, all the games like Minecraft, anything that is dynamically generated usually promises such vast exploration and wonder. A few days ago "No Man's Sky" was announced, and seeing the initial amount of massive hype that came up around it, I thought it appropriate to make a thread on it, or about procedural games in general :P Enjoy! www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-12-09-a-future-that-has-a-history-introducing-no-mans-sky

Yes, I'm all about this. I don't know how well it plays, but even if the combat is shit... dat exploration! This, Destiny, and Next Gen GTAV and Last of Us are my current favorite reasons to buy a PS4.

Eww PS4
Can't wait until that Wii U release
Or the PC one because that's actually going to happen rite?
Oh gosh, I hope this isn't a PS4 exclusive.

Saw and heard about this months ago, before the devs had their equipment all lost in a flood.
Meh.

On one hand, no one really seems to know what the gameplay actually is, and I'm not sure it's my kinda jam.
On the other hand, space dinosaurs. Mother flippin' space dinosaurs. If there is a single planet in that infinite procedurally generated galaxy that contains a Nazi space dinosaur with a chainsaw that I can fight, I'm definitely buying it.

Is it?
I mean, is there really justification for not having a Nazi space dinosaur with a chainsaw that you can fight?

Is it? I mean, is there really justification for not having a Nazi space dinosaur with a chainsaw that you can fight? Fight.... or ride! Yeah as far as the combat goes we've only seen hints here and there. A few stray fighters getting shot down, some asteroids blown to pieces, and there's video of some handheld beam weapons used on some floating robot. We know there are resources so presumably there's crafting. Honestly with the exploration aspects that's enough to get me interested. The combat could actually suck and I might still love this game. They just better freakin' deliver on the exploration and discovery. If it turns out they have thousands of worlds but only about 10 animal types other than reskins that will be hugely disappointing.

Riding is a great idea, particularly in co-op, one player controls a space dinosaur with a chainsaw, the other is a human with a gun riding it. Why doesn't this exist yet?

Then you fight other players and their giant space dinosaurs with chainsaws. It'll be like Titanfall on crack. "Prepare for dinofall." *whosh*thud*vrrrvrrrrrrrrrr*

It really doesn't matter what you do next. I mean, it's hard to envision gameplay where you're either a dinosaur with a chainsaw or a human with a gun riding a dinosaur with a chainsaw not being awesome.

My sentiments have been echoed by the creators of the game;
"Wouldn't it be cool if there was a game where..."

My two main concerns at this point are division of labour and the economics mechanics. Convenience must not be given to the players, and players should not have the ability to do all things as well as all others. Doing so will generate a need of community, much like SWG had. Likewise, how they handle the economy will be a significant factor in how the community forms. If there are npcs who trade/have at arbitrary rates with infinite pools of resource destruction/creation, it will serve as a massive roadblock in reaching a player-driven economy, and thus further stint the division of labour, therefore community.
More meta-game, more depth! More, more!

This game looks great but most of the answers I've seen from HelloGames so far have been devoid of any sort of detail. I understand that some of this is just to keep things under wraps as to not spoil the surprises in the game but I'm still not entirely understanding how the game operates.
Most of the interviews I've seen they try to push the concept that you can do almost anything. Or that they're not really trying to direct you one way or the other in regards to how you want to play the game. But if I want to be a "bounty hunter" or a "botanist" as mentioned in the GameSpot video how deep is that experience for the player? I can see how they could deliver a multitude of ways to play the game and have them all mostly be incredibly boring or shallow.

Counterpoint: all signs point to being able to shoot the dinosaurs, and being able to punch that stupid shark in is dumb face.

I don't know how much of an in game community there is even supposed to be. They are putting all the players at the edge of the galaxy, on different worlds, with a goal of reaching the center that isn't supposed to be the end of the game, but should be quite challenging and not all players will reach it. Maybe there will be great hubs of player activity, or maybe it will be more like Journey: The Space Edition (with crafting and a procedural galaxy).
Regardless of how it plays I'm excited to try it out. Maybe I'll play it for a month or two and forget about it, maybe I'll play it for years. I dunno...
