Matchmaking has still been shit. I'm waiting for this "Content Update"... I tried matchmaking last night as the last activity before going to bed, got into a full lobby in ~ 1 minute, just when I got excited and pondering the consequences of possibly pulling an all nighter, I got "connection to host failed" error. Thank you, matchmaking, for letting me sleep

I tried to play this afternoon - it took about 10 attempts to finally get a match. I was then disappointed to discover that nostalgia is better left to memories. The play seemed archaic... Sadness.

I got into lobbies OK, and had a lot of fun playing 3 games. Halo has one central tight loop especially when using BR: remove shields then go for headshot. When that headshot connects, it is very exhilarating.
Probably can get a bit old after playing extended hours, but is a great alternative to Destiny and AW.

It's now 9:41pm PT. Finished installing the patch:
1) first search attempt on Halo 2 anniversary playlist found a game fast enough (enough as still in minutes, definitely < 2) and played fine; 2) second search attempt on Team Slayer failed during "connecting to session" phase; 3) third search attempt on Team Slayer found a game (in < 2 minutes) and played fine. 4) fourth search attempt on Halo 3 failed during "connecting to session" phase; 5) fifth search attempt on Halo 2 Classic found players fast enough (~ 1 minute, probably because it only requires 8 players, but got stuck on "connecting session" for a long time until I backed out;
It seems to me that MM is now pretty good at "finding players", but "connecting session" is still problematic.

The community continues its raging campaign after this patch, it has become more entertaining to read rant posts on Halo subreddit than actually playing the game 343i is really in hot waters right now, and they could take MSFT down with it if they don't get their **** together fast.

343i's biggest mistakes with Halo 4 are these... - A game that was not ready for "prime time" when it released.
- A piss poor network code incapable of handling the game's online matchmaking in smooth fashion.
- Getting away from the franchise's arena based game-play heritage.
- Not ready for "Prime Time" -When Halo 4 got released there were numerous issues... - The game's weapon sandbox needed further balancing. Eventually, the game's weapon sandbox got address and produced arguably the best balanced weapon game-play in a Halo title (minus issues surrounding load-outs).
- The File Share wasn't available and wouldn't be up and running for some time. Eventually, 343i was able to get the File Share up and running as it should of been from the get-go.
- Limited playlists that restricted some of the franchises' favorite game-types from being available to play. Over time the playlists would expand and open-up to include several of the favorites as well as some fun new game-types too, but the initial restrictions certainly helped lead to a quick fatiguing of the online experience.
- Limited disk maps and even further limits on quality maps for the variety of game-types Halo has. Over time DLC maps became available as well as forged maps, but DLC sales were not very impressive and lobbies required everyone to have access to those maps in order for them to be available to play. Forged maps should have been included initially, but they also had a problem onto themselves which related to online performance; many forge maps lead to unplayable experiences when guests were in lobbies. Overall, these limitations on maps also helped lead to a quick fatiguing of the online experience.
- Despite promoting the Competitive Skill Rank system pre-release it was announced quite late in the development cycle that it would not be ready when the game got released. Lacking the CSR system didn't help those who live and die for a ranking system. Also, the system went on to displease many when it did become available because it didn't have visible ranks in-game; instead, requiring players to go to the Waypoint webpage or smartglass app (not sure that ever got up and running as promised).
- A new Join-In-Progress (JIP) system wasn't ideally set for the individual playlists. At first all the playlists had JIP and it was active for nearly the entire match; though, over time 343i began to realize that they needed to refine the JIP system overall and even more specifically per playlists.
- The Forge and Custom Game options both took steps back from Halo: Reach. While 343i put some effort into providing some new custom game options the forge system itself never improved much beyond typical fixes to major problematic issues.
- Piss Poor Online Performances - The online experiences were ever so aggravating when black screens would consistently occur halting game-play. Many love to blame the JIP system for this and in truth it certainly did lead to many, if not all, of the back screens but the real root of the problem isn't really with the JIP system as I believe it's a necessary evil to combat the unsolvable issues of players quitting; instead, the main problems were that the networking code itself that supported the matchmaking system couldn't adeptly handle what the game was trying to do and pairing that with a system that was relying on a peer-to-peer (P2P) approach just meant that the game was incapable of consistently providing a smooth and enjoyable online experience. - Traditional Arena-Based Gameplay - In 343i's attempt to attract a wider audience they got away from some important aspects that make Halo a fun addictive FPS that's different from many others... - Unbalanced starts by introducing custom Load-outs -- a major staple of arena-based shooters is in it's balanced starts.
- Including random global and personal ordinance drops caused problems on how to best control the map -- another staple of arena-based shooters is the focus on controlling the maps' power weapons and positions.
- Various armor abilities and perks that could subvert elements of map control and game-play balance -- not really a major issue outside the opinion of nostalgic purists, but one that still nonetheless lent itself to the unbalanced feel within a traditional arena-based shooter.
With Halo 5 343i has focused on getting back to the arena-based basics of balanced starts and controlling power weapons and positions; everything else that people are complaining about from the videos are ultimately minor complaints that are not worth getting all worked up about, but people will be people (that is they'll be emotionally quick to judge and stupid in their decisiveness). Overall, Halo 5 is looking pretty gosh darn golly gee whiz slick and I personally can't wait for the BETA as it appears 343i are focusing on the proper aspect this time around.

I am excited about the Halo 5 beta too after seeing the video. However, 343i screwed up Halo MCC matchmaking, and things are still quite broken after 2 weeks and several patches. These have caused me to lose confidence in them a little.
We will know soon enough whether these guys can really carry the weight of Halo.
