Got some TF done. Sucked massively for a while, but started to get back in my groove and I finished my regen (2nd) challenges so now I'm free to play as I want again until I hit the cap.
Really glad to have the ability to sell off burn cards I don't use, but still having a hard time getting through them. heh There are just so many I want to use, but the game just gives them to me faster than I can use them. I guess there's a lot I should dump because they aren't very good, but I still want to use them just for fun.

One week to launch, if you need to pass the time you can explore www.destinyplanetview.com/ Mars, Venus and Moon are featured and each have ~30 points of interest you can navigate to.

Ruh-roh, Bungie isn't getting review copies into the hands of the gaming press until the day before release...
That's never been a good sign.

Ruh-roh, Bungie isn't getting review copies into the hands of the gaming press until the day before release... That's never been a good sign. I believe they've also said that Destiny's servers won't go live until 9/9, so having a copy before then isn't going to do anyone much good anyway. Something along the lines of "retailers might break street date, but our servers won't."

And there are news articles about this: www.gamezone.com/originals/2014/09/02/in-before-i-m-canceling-my-pre-order-over-destiny-s-late-reviewsIt is my opinion though if a gamer needs to wait for review scores before buying a game, then he should just wait until after the game is released. There are no game critics that can do a better job than the collective wisdom of the player community, and with the explosion of social media, there are no shortage of outlets to find that out. For Destiny specifically: the vast majority of the pre-order should come from people who have experienced the beta. If a player has played the game himself through beta, he has no reason to wait for what critics have to say about it. The major difference between the full game and the beta is the amount of playable content offered, and that's not something critics can provide with just a week of play (hopefully).

Well sure, and at its heart it's an MMO, and those you can't review in a few weeks. As an MMO vet I get it, but Destiny isn't attracting the usual MMO crowd. People will cancel because of this, and that affects server population, which in turn impacts player experience. Within the clan we won't notice, but it can hit players coming in solo.

I am generally a believer that if you are selling preorders then you should have a means for people to judge your game and not just be buying into so much vaporware and hype. In this particular case, however, they have been showing the game off to media and specific groups, it's been at shows, and there was a massive public beta. The game it-self didn't go gold until just what, two weeks prior to launch? Honestly there hasn't been time for review copies to go out, not when the game has no stand alone single player mode.
Personally I think the beta makes up for it all. It was better than any review could have been. I got to play the game in a nearly finished state with a few things locked off for release and what I saw convinced me. Honestly the content that we didn't see could be underwhelming compared to what we did and I'll still enjoy the hell out of the game. I didn't even touch the crucible yet! So, yeah. ;3

The major difference between the full game and the beta is the amount of playable content offered, and that's not something critics can provide with just a week of play (hopefully). Game reviewers are a dying species. What they do, isn't needed anymore. Alphas, betas, companies doing media events (CoDAW MP example), then yuoutubers doing their reviews of their play at these expos for weeks. Then toss in how youtubers and twitch do live broadcasts the day of the release, spamming the net .... every nuance of the game is available to a potential buyers right on day 1. Like Mannon said above, come on, one could have played Destiny for a week not long ago. That's 100x more worthwhile than any IGN review. All these things already out, ... a potential buyer's mind is ALREADY made up at this point. You don't need IGN's 1-10 score system. I would venture a guess that fewer than a 100 people will make a decision based on that review. articles like the above one are just these people being butt hurt. They want to feel important. I pre-ordered Destiny, but I don't know if I am picking it up now. I am on the fence. My decision (or indecision to buy it) was made by the Beta release.

tl;dr Reviews probably are pointless, but I feel we've lost something in that which isn't entirely made up for in other ways for most games... But for Destiny the beta was pretty much all anybody needed and even if you didn't play it there's plenty to read and watch based on it.
I will say that for a lot of games what we do have available isn't really good enough, at least not on day one, and certainly not during the preorder phase. I say that because while there are many things other than reviews for most games those things don't really do a very good job of informing people. Alpha's and early access are deceptive, because they can showcase a game with great potential and then have no discernable progress for two years or the game may never even be finished. Media events do show off a game, but they are still promotional propaganda and intentionally paint a rosey picture of the game. Youtubers and Twitch players don't usually get to show anything until release and even then most are not really providing any kind of balanced review, (with some exceptions like TotalBiscuit). In fact many Youtubers are being paid to promote games they play. *shrug*
I dunno... Part of me thinks that the slow death of journalism (including reviews) is coming a bit too soon. Internet media has advanced enough to make most journalism redundant, yet without any of the safeguards or journalistic ethics... which admittedly have been waning in other media as well. But it's all pretty much mute now anyway since every game seems to have a review embargo until release day which pretty much makes reviews nearly pointless.
Seems like it's all a game of getting people's money before they know what they've bought, without regard for how that hurts your reputation. I think it's shortsighted for publishers, but I guess if everybody is doing it then where are you going to turn to and boycotting is pointless.

Well, the issue isn't so much the quality or validity of reviews; the issue is that publishers that don't make review copies available before release are usually doing it to shield a troubled product. Again, Destiny is an MMO, a genre which doesn't tend to lend itself to pre-release reviews; though, we did get a decent idea of what to expect out of the game coming out of alpha and beta. Still, the news of no review copies being sent out is likely to make some gamers question their pre-order.

tl;dr ...minor OT rant, just ignore
They can always cancel preorder and wait to see until after launch, although given the beta and the fact that the game just went gold so there really wasn't time for review copies to go out early anyway I don't think there's anything being hidden in this case.
That's not to say it isn't becoming common for publishers to build up as much hype and preorders as they can while not allowing any actual reviews or hands on looks at the game until launch. That kind of practice is unethical IMO, but unfortunately it's not illegal and the industry doesn't even bat an eye. There's usually some post launch gamer backlash and some media even gets involved, but it's pretty much too late by then and there's no refunds on those preorders or anything like that. It does generate some public animosity, but memories seem to be pretty short so there really is no adequate deterrent.
I guess we have economy of scale and corporate culture, (investor and thus money first) to thank for publishers really not really catering to customers best interests, but there's just no checks and balances. (Welcome to capitalism, I guess... but still. The media is supposed to provide that role, but instead has been assimilated as well.)
Uhh... I'll just shutup before this turns political. ;3

I pre-ordered Destiny, but I don't know if I am picking it up now. I am on the fence. My decision (or indecision to buy it) was made by the Beta release. Since beta did not make you excited about the game, and you are going to be busy with Ghosts for the month of September, if I were you I would just cancel the preorder and wait for player community's response (and how many people on your friends list are playing) until October. This is because beta has already showcased the main fun elements of the game (which folks at Bungie like to call "30 seconds of fun" design principle), the full game are just adding more content and variety of that fun. You can easily pick up the game through digital download (with lots of game to play this holiday season, digital version eliminate the headache of having to switch game disc ) then if you need something to fill the gap between Ghosts and AW.

My CoD Ghosts playing is done on Sep 21st. Not sure what I will do after that.
I think I gave Gamestop $5 for the preorder? Not sure, but can I get that back? I'll probably just let it go and if I pick up the game in late September, I guess the price will be reduced by $5.

You should at least get store credit and transfer the $5 to something else like AW or something.

It's finally here! And if I can actually get to Gamestop I might actually get to acquire my code for the game... I preordered the digital copy in part so I wouldn't have to deal with this shiz... srsly fuck Gamestop.

I'm not getting the game, so my beta stats are dead and buried like a corpse. We still hope you'll reconsider . Since you enjoy Mass Effect trilogies, you should be able to have fun with Destiny too. If you do reconsider, please also reconsider your platform of choice. All of your cool friends are on the XBL anyway, and we need you for the Raids...

I'm curious to see what Eurogamer Digital Foundry has to say about the two versions, I'm sure that will be up in a couple of days. I'm still not sold on the game though. My hope is that you'll all be bored senseless by the game in time for Titanfall Map Pack #3

Don't you need a break from Titanfall from time to time? Destiny is a cool alternative to be played along with Titanfall IMHO (Although the different button setup for melee is messing me up a bit...) How about this trade: if you join us on Destiny, I will buy the 3rd map pack and join you on Titanfall pawnage

What is with people that don't buy the season pass? Anyway, I think I'll hitch my wagon to Halo MC on Xbox, and Advanced Warfare on PS4 for my new multiplayer games. In the meantime I still need to put more time onto PvZ Garden Warfare on Xbox and Battlefield 4 on PS4. I don't see Destiny fitting in.

Well...if anyone doubted my willpower and potential for binge gaming...here ya go. Played since 3 AM this morning til now straight through with minimal breaks. Beat the main game. Played and beat all the strike missions. Beat Heroic Challenge. Yay.
My short review: Gameplay/Visuals/Sound Design/Level Design/Bosses are all fantastic. 10/10 stuff. The story? Nope. Sure it might be on the grimore cards, but my group was utterly bewildered by the lackluster story.
Two very cool things to note. I played as a titan assault early on, but switched to defender as enemies started getting tougher. If a teammate went down I would sprint to them and use my super...creating an invincible bubble around myself to peacefully revive them. My group ended up getting some very nice level 16 rare weapons that pretty much carried us through the rest of the game. My group consisted of 2 hunters. One went bladedancer, which looked badass and sounded very fun. Bladedance is a short cooldown power as opposed to normal supers.
I can't see the game getting boring any time soon because of the potential for raids and the fact that you must find rare loot to reach level 21-30.
