Discipline: reduce cool down of grenades. In beta at level 8, no Discipline = 1 minute cool down, 54 discipline gives you max speed of 20 seconds cool down; Strength: reduce cool down of melee ability. In beta at level 8, no Strength = 1 minute cool down, 54 strength gives you max speed of 20 seconds cool down; Intellect: reduce cool down of super. Light (note: this is not the same as "Motes of Light"): increase your level once you reach level 20. So to go above level 20, you need to find and equip armors with "Light". After that, earning XP will create "Motes of Light". UPDATE (08/07/2014): A text based post has been created to talk about this (and a few other things as well): destinytracker.com/Forums/Post/3760/2/site-news-attributes-explained-and-theory-crafting

I know all we have is the beta, but does anyone know how motes of light actually work? If a chestplate had + a certain # of Light, then when you collect motes of light does it connect to the chestplate itself or does it just become something innate? And then what if you take the chestplate off? Does that revert you back to level 20? If it does, then do you need to recollect motes of light to regain levels or is it permanent?

Here is what I know: 1) "Light" and "Mote of Lights" are different things. From the context of your question, looks like you are talking about Light; 2) Light is a property of armor. Once you reach level 20, the only way to get to higher level is to find and equip armor pieces that have "Light". So far we only know that 118 Light can get you to level 29 (as shown in the IGN reveal video); 3) "Mote of Lights" looks like some kind of currency, because in beta I noticed that you need it to buy certain high level gears; 4) To earn "Mote of Lights", you need to reach level 20 and have armors with "Light" equipped;

Yes, the Speaker required motes for several things. I thought about mentioning it before, but figured most peeps would have seen that as well.
I think what's confusing the issue is that some people have been saying that equipping armor with "light" opens up a new kind of XP for you to level up beyond level 20 and that it's capped by the total amount of "light".
I don't think that is strictly true simply because we have no evidence of it and as 3055 was asking, what happens if you unequip your light gear? Looks to me more like it directly gives you a level boost separate from your actual level. Thus if you unequip some "light" your level goes down and if you re-equip it goes right back up. Like Attack, I'm sure it's ignored by Crucible except in Iron Banner. But that's also just educated guesswork based on one video of a level 29 guardian. And even the things shown there could still change before launch.
One thing's for sure. It looks like level 20 is a major milestone and the game changes pretty drastically at that point, but doesn't end.

Yes, the video confirmed that un-equiping armors with Light will result in reduction of levels. Definitions from Light: Light is a player attribute that boosts the player's level, increasing the damage done by subclass abilities against higher-level enemies. A player's light attribute can be increased by equipping armor that boosts this attribute. Mote of Light: Mote of Light is a type of currency which are accumulated by continuing to play after reaching level 20. They can be used to purchase legendary items such as Warlock Bonds, Hunter Cloaks, and Titan Badges from The Speaker.

oh. I thought Mote of Light was like a new EXP type. Like normal enemies give exp, and once you have items with Light, enemies drop Mote of Light as exp.
But so same question: is Light innate or is it tied to your items?

wait, so armor with Light just straight up gives you bonus levels? Instead of unlocking higher levels and you earning more exp to get to that level?

Light is a stat boosted by armor, in the same way that armor can boost discipline, intellect, and strength.
