As some of you may know... I don't have a lot of time to play video games, being a teacher, husband, and father of two young children. I don't dedicate hours at a time to play games and my weekends are usually spent with the kids. Really, I spend no more than 5/10 hours a week playing on my PS4 nowadays.
I was tempted (and still tempted) to get Watchdogs, but Destiny has me intrigued. The best way I've had it described to me is that is it like Halo meets Final Fantasy.
So... my silly question:
Why should I play Destiny?

IMHO Destiny is a good game for you to pick up, for several reasons:
1) Story missions: these are ideal for solo play and each can be completed in < 30 minutes. Perfect for bite sized entertainment. Take me for an example: although I have been waiting for Destiny since last year, I am very occupied this month and won't find big chunk of time to play games. For the past 2 days, I have been fitting story missions into 30 minute blocks that I manage to find and have been having fun;
2) Strike missions: these are pretty short as well, 20 - 30 minutes in lengths. They are best to be played with 2 other friends, but solo players can enjoy them too because the matchmaking will put random players together;
3) Exploration: in this mode you can patrol freely and just explore and kill, however long or short you want. It can be as short as a few minutes, or as long as several hours;
4) If you have played Halo in the past, the core game play is very similar, so no extra skill curves to go through before you can enjoy the game;
5) The character development you are doing will be carried forward to future games. So none of your "efforts" are wasted.
In short: for players who have very limited play time, Destiny is like Halo firefight, on steroids (in terms of fun, weapons, abilities, enemies, maps, open world exploration, etc), plus the dimension of character development (i.e. your character is becoming more and more powerful and awesome looking over time).

Also, unlike most MMORPGs, this doesn't require 24/7 grinding to have fun and not fall behind. You get plenty of levels quickly (less than 12 hours played and im lvl 18) and there's plenty of gear to go around to circumvent repetitive farming exercises.
It's honestly such a great game for both casual players and hardcore players. It seems to cater to all pretty damn well.

Another note for players who have limited time: if you enjoy Halo MP, you'll enjoy Destiny's PvP as well, and I believe more (because it is less hard core). To play this, all you need to do is to reach level 5 (which only takes 2-3 store missions to reach, in ~ 1 hour or 2 play time), and you can play nothing but Destiny PvP (it is called Crucible). Level advantage is disabled so level 5 is (almost) on the same playing field as level 30. Average game length is between 10 and 15 minutes, similar to Halo and CoD. There are people out there playing nothing but PvP, and level up just like PvE players. Some players have already put in crazy amount of time, jogging for top positions on the community implemented leaderboard/stats site destinytracker.com/

Crap... I forgot to mention that I've never played Halo. Ever. I have played FPS like Doom, wolfenstein, quake, and early Medal of Honor games
Is there a big learning curve in destiny?
And the threads I've read for codes... what do those codes do?

Also, unlike Borderlands 2, you can do fine with under-levelled gear. My Gazon-C has been killing high value enemies just fine, despite being 6 levels or so below.

And the threads I've read for codes... what do those codes do? If you have never played Halo, you should buy XONE and get Halo Master Chief Collection . Unfortunately I have never played the games you mentioned above. I did play CoD a lot, so I can compare the two. Check out this post: denkirson.proboards.com/post/180773/thread

Regarding codes: these are bonus digital items bungie can give out from time to time through channels outside the game. The ones out so far are cosmetic only and do not affect actual game play.

I'd say buy it. Just enjoy the PvE part. It'll keep you amused for ages I think. Seems spot on for casual play.

Just unlocked Mars and I am underlevelled by 3 levels so that might be worth taking into consideration. Guess I have gone through the story quickly without needing to do side missions to access better gear.

My limited impression so far is that if playing story missions solo it is not a good idea to be 2+ level below the recommended level. Probably better to switch to Explore and complete some bounties. It can level you up fairly fast in a stress free manner.

I must have been under levelled by three levels on Eye Of A Gate Lord. That mission is a tough cookie and I am surprised I never died. Came close a few times though. It appears the Servitors are weaker than in the Beta and my Gazon-C git a magazine buff (12 in the Beta, 15 in the game) so that helps.

If you're talking about the original Doom, Wolfenstein, and Quake games it sounds like you haven't played much in the way of modern shooters so Destiny could prove quite different from what you're used to.
It is very very similar to Halo so if you get a chance to play any of the Halo games it should give you a feel for it. As per Bungie's SOP the game feels a bit "floaty" compared to other shooters. They actually reduce the effects of gravity on both the player and enemies so jumps take big, slow arcs. Destiny also gives you a second vertical movement ability based on your subclass build. The main ones are double jump, glide, and jetpack, and blink is also available.
Headshots do something like 3X normal damage, but it takes more hits to kill than CoD. Generally the TTK is much longer than CoD, though it is a bit faster in Destiny than past Halo's.
In Destiny your loadout is limited to one weapon each of three different catagories, although you can swap them via your inventory any time at the cost of your ammo.
Health regenerates after a delay, but if it gets knocked down really low it pauses at 25% or so for a delay before fully regenerating. I don't remember the specifics. Functionally it is similar to Halo.
It is very hard to describe Destiny without more context, I recommend watching some videos.

Hit me up on PS4 if you get Destiny. I'll run missions and stuff with you, show you where golden chests are, ect. I'm still fairly low level since I've not had much time to play, but I bring some of what I know from Beta so I know the basics. We got a few other bros playing too.
