Just thought I'd start a thread for little tips we can pass on and share: - In beta changing your special weapon would deplete your special ammo, but this appears to have been changed for PvE. It now only depletes half your special ammo to swap out your special weapons at will as your situation demands it. This makes it very much to your advantage to carry a sniper rifle and a shotgun or fusion rifle at all times.
- The specific items you acquire from an engram are chosen at the time you turn it in rather than when you got the engram it-self. This means you can save and even transfer engrams then turn them in for higher level loot.
- If you're getting really low on ammo use up all (or nearly all) of your primary and special ammo, then wait. In about 30 seconds or so the game will gift you with free ammo. If you do this before picking up dropped ammo you can top off before moving on.
- Enemy shields prevent headshot/weakspot critical damage multipliers.
- Enemy shields are color coded showing which element they are weak to. Yellow/orange is fire damage , blue is arc damage , and purple is void damage .
- If an attack does more than enough damage to deplete a shield the remainder of the damage is applied as if there were no shield, including headshot/weakspot critical damage multipliers.
- Equip weapons or items that you want to level up when you go turn in bounties and quest rewards so they can earn XP.
- You can only equip one exotic weapon and one exotic armor piece at a time.
- Xur - Agent of the Nine is a merchant that appears only on weekends near the Crucible NPCs. He sells one exotic item for each class for 13 Strange Coins, and one exotic engram for 23 Motes of Light. (Source below and A Rambling Guide...)
- Completing a patrol mission makes a loot chest spawn nearby.
- Long reload animations (particularly of shotguns) can be cancelled after ammo is added.
- The Advisor available from you Legend in the Destiny Companion App is very useful for tracking your current bounties, available bounties, this week's earned Vanguard/Crucible Marks, this week's Raid progress, daily/weekly activities, and nearest bonuses.
- Bonuses for daily/weekly activities are unique to the character and can be repeated for all three character slots.
- Upgrade defense on your rare equipment to increase light and increase your level in turn.
- A good farming location is the Temple of Crota in the first story mission on the Moon. Details
- The BEST farming location in game (until it gets patched out) is the Treasure Cave in the Skywatch. Details
- You can obtain legendary gear without farming by earning marks to purchase items from NPC's.
- Public events happen on a timetable and repeat every half hour. Earth Details via Reddit. Online tracker at destinypublicevents.com. Also look for the Destiy Timers android app!
- The sit and dance gestures can be useful in PvP at capture points to provide a better view of your environment and potentially make you less conspicuous (sitting).
- You don't have to upgrade items to get the extra materials from dismantling them, just level them up with enough XP. (Source, this Reddit post)
Note: Many thanks to the bros for several of these tips. I'm collecting some from the thread just to make it easier to use as a reference, see thread for sources.

You can only equip one exotic item at any one time. These are purchased from Zur who only attends the Tower at the weekends and these items usually cost 13 Strange Coins. He is located in the section where the Crucible Guardians are located.
The ammo packs you purchase from the Gunsmith have a cooldown of two minutes (I think), which can be bought with Glimmer (Rifle ammo costs 100 Glimmer, Special ammo costs 250 and Heavy ammo costs 950 Glimmer). As a result of the cooldown you are probably better off keeping most of your Glimmer for upgrades than for hoarding ammo packs. In addition, having to go into your menus to activate the synthesis packs makes them impractical to use during several Strike missions, where they are most needed.
Side missions that require you to kill 10 majors or ultras are enemies that have yellow names.
Correction: The cooldown of the ammo synthesis packs is dependent on the event you are doing. Cooldown takes 5 minutes on the Daily Heroic Strike missions. As a side note, the game states that you do not get ammo drops from enemies from guns you have equipped. What it actually means is that weapon ammo drops drops to a type of weapon you did not kill them with, encouraging you to use all three weapon types at your disposal.

I read somewhere that you can have 1 exotic weapon and 1 exotic piece of armor quipped at one time. True or false?

Wish they would give us some sort of quick inventory means of activating such things, maybe from the ghost screen which as far as I know only uses two buttons at the moment to summon your vehicle or go to orbit. Maybe shoulder buttons to scroll through items and hold X/A to activate. Would still take a moment, but would be less fiddly than going to your inventory and having to use the pointer.
You could do it without going to that screen, but you'd either have to replace gestures or do some combination that would be harder to explain to people.

Tip: equip the weapon you want to level up right before you turn in your bounty to quickly upgrade that weapon: EDIT: as TheHawkNY pointed out below, this is for all gears, not just weapons.

Added the correction to the ammo synthesis packs, as I know that for sure. I had wasted a shed load of Glimmer a few days ago so I don't know the full extent of the cooldown times of ammo synthesis packs.

I believe the glimmer cap is 25k, so if you're approaching that, ammo packs seem like a good investment. My guess is you'll want to have ammo packs for the Raid.
Witty: it's not just weapons that level when you turn in the bounty, it's everything that you have equipped. Make sure you swap out anything leveled you have equipped for something that needs to be leveled. It's also good for doing the first few levels of your second subclass, as at that point in the game it's a real pain to be a subclass with no abilities or armor taking on high-level enemies.

I had about 9000 glimmer but I pissed it all away at the Cryptarch hoping for something good. They are handy for doing bounty requests I think though.

Switching out your special and/or heavy weapons in PvE still depletes reserve ammo, but it's only reduced by half now compared to losing all of it in the Beta. Stated in the launch day patch notes.
Also saw on the Destiny Tracker Twitter feed that completing a patrol mission forces a loot chest to spawn in your vicinity. Didn't notice that before.

Public Patrol events grant you 3 Vanguard Marks upon completion. I usually do them having never activated them so it appears there may be an unreasonable distance between activating the mission and the objective.

When using a shotgun, if you melee interrupting your reload you do not reset the ammo count to when you initiated the reload, meaning you don't need to wait for a full reload if you are in a sticky situation.

Best way (IMHO) to keep track of what to play: Destiny Companion App -> Legend -> Advisor
It will show you progress on your current bounties, available bounties, this week's earned Vanguard/Crucible Marks, this week's Raid progress, daily/weekly activities, and nearest bonuses.

Are bonuses for daily/weekly activities unique to the character? Can I do them with each character and get the bonuses, or only get them with the first character I complete them with?

This is the main reason to level up multiple characters. Each is restricted and given bonuses separately. My titan has +20% rep and exp because he did nightfall, but my Warlock is maxxed out on vanguard marks for the week because she completed all those strike missions...etc.

I guess also for multiple characters it does not matter if you bother to decode those engrams as much as if you were undecided on ranking up an additional character.

You can farm Engrams at the Temple of Crota on story mode. Just killing the Thrall then die, rinse and repeat.

Also good for multikill bounties. I did fusion rifle and super multikill bounties that require you to kill at least 2 and 3 enemies (respectfully) in one attack 20 times. Actually found the fusion rifle quite useful for taking out multiple thrall where shotgun generally only kills one. AoE just wrecks them, though. Headshotting the thralls is also very effective. You can just aim head level and strafe left and right while you mow them down then switch to secondary or mebbe toss a grenade while you reload.
Just don't kill the knight or leave a few of the other guys alive and let them kill you to restart. I'm not sure how many you have to leave alive, but I have killed everything but the knight and another time I accidentally killed the knight but still had about 3 of the others alive so I was fine. (I only did normal because I was farming multikills, not engrams.)
Note: Pickup ammo before you let them kill you, the ammo will disappear, but items will not.

Don't kill the Knight. Even if you don't kill all of the other enemies but do kill the knight it will move you to the next check point. Also... Engrams don't disappear when you die. Blue and purples are always mailed to you.

I have accidentally killed an Acolyte as I leave them in case I mistake them for a Knight, which hasn't happened yet. I have shot at a Hollow Knight before, luckily not killing him. Handy for my Hand Cannon kills and I got a Mote of Light, so I'm ranking my subclass (Arc thingy for Hunter). Also, the weapon parts from Engrams that give a weapon will come in handy for upgrades.

Longtime lurker (cod4 days) with information I haven't really seen posted before. I was stuck at level 24 for the longest time waiting for my first piece of legendary armor. I didn't want to waste any resources upgrading all the pieces of rare armor I had because I was trying to save all of my resources for the (hopefully) inevitable legendary gear I would find. After grinding level 24 strikes and not gettin any gear I said screw it and decided to spend the resources ( glimmer and hadronic essence mostly I believe) to upgrade all of the rare gear. Turns out that the upgrades that improve the defense of the rare items also increases the amount of light received from the item. I was amazed and saw my level go from 24 to 25 just from upgrading the defense on the rare gear I already had. I'm now fully equipped with legendary armor and did all the upgrades up to the point that they require ascendant shards and I was able to get myself to level 27 (88 light) without any exotic equipment. I think that based on the charts it would be possible to hit 28 if I'm willing to use enough ascendant shards to upgrade the defense and light further.
Tl;dr upgrade defense on your rare equipment to increase light and level up allowing you to tackle harder missions and get better gear
Also, You are my bro, bro.

Don't choose Bad Juju as your exotic primary. Bad Juju is fairly lackluster, due largely to its small magazine size and low impact. I'm not sure it's much good for anything more than your run of the mill trash mobs, and it's totally unusable in PvP.

Cave farm. Do it now. Before they patch it. Go to skywatch. Earth. Now. You will more than likely see a high level player shooting at a cave spawning minions almost instantaneously. Join in. Ask to join their fire team. Wait til they reload to run in and get the loot. Repeat.
I got 3 exotics and 7 legendaries in about 6 hours of gametime. Pretty happy.
