If loot is the endgame eventually people will max out their loot as well. Oh no need to worry about that for many reasons: The Cryptarch can give you weapons up to four levels below your level. The blue engram that supposedly allows you to get legendary gear probably has a chance of around 0.01% You can only earn 100 Vanguard Marks in any given seven days (even I managed to reach the maximum limit) Gear can be given that belongs to any of the three characters Xur only shows during the weekends for Exotics, and many of the stellar ones may barely show up (checked them today and none of them prompt me to get the final Strange Coin required to buy any of them) Do not allow Strange Coins to be dropped too often Make the Weekly Heroic Strike mission, to get Strange Coins, very hard (tried the Moon one and it's a pain in the backside) Vnaguard gear usually has a required Vanguard rank so you can purchase them, which take time to max ou (rank 2 for armour, 3 for weapons) Then to retain the player base they can add DLC and give higher ranked gear just like Borderlands did with Seraph gear, although most of the weapons were not top gear for the characters anyway.

To be honest I think that levels 1 through 20 are more of an extended tutorial during which the game gradually exposes you to more and more of it's systems and mechanics. For new players it's definitely not meant to be rushed through, but it's also not a tremendous slog.
I don't get the feeling of first 24 hours being wasted. First 24 hours of playing is enough to earn you quite a few levels and a decent bit of loot and introduce you to most of the basics without overwhelming you, and if you don't like the game at that point then you probably know enough to make a decision whether to continue or not, because there are a lot of details that will open up, but the core combat mechanics are there from the first mission.

'Wasted' was probably a poor word to use by me. But it's kind of close.
Here's an example of what i am getting at. I've been playing this game for the last four hours, and I truly feel like i am wasting my time doing these bounties trying to get the crucible bounties down. I just want to get it over with. Game after game against level 20 to 28 players. There are players doing tons of shit i can't do, who are much more powerful than me and i am pretty much overmatched at times. Opponents with better jumping, quicker melee's, faster grenade refill, teleporting, restore their health faster, tons of shit i can't do.
WTF? Come on.
What's the point here? Whoever thought up this unbalanced MP system, well, it's garbage. There a solid reason people might not like this game after getting it. And it's a shame because the few games i have had against similar level players, i have had a good time. I had two games against squads of players who were all under level 15, i had 21 and 15 kills in those games (2.0 and 1.5 kd). That was fun. But who makes a multiplayer where higher level means more powerful? Those who play more, have an advantage? Ridiculously dumb.
So with that, ...maybe the time isn't wasted because you ultimately get to level 20 or whatever.....but the ride sucks d1ck along the way (at least playing crucible).

If you play theough while also doing the PvE bounties, you'll easily be at 20 by the time you're finished with the story. No need to do the crucible bounties at all if you're having a bad time. Just wait until the story is done and then you won't have to deal with the ability disadvantages you're facing now.

I hate crucible. Don't level doing Crucible. This is PvE kill stuff with your buddy game. If you want a solo multiplayer PvP game you came to the wrong place.
Unless you are around for Salvage. Salvage is pretty cool.

All of these "bitching" will soon pass. After all, the game is only out for 1 week. I personally don't see why in such a hurry to reach the max level on a single character. The game is designed to be played at whatever pace a gamer feels comfortable about, so just play it naturally. . I'm pretty sure it has been brought up on here, the 'why'. Because the makers of Destiny have openly stated a number of things that make a player feel like his/her time spent in the first 24 hours of playing is just wasted. One, Bungie has openly said (paraphrasing here) the game is better later. They have also said it's all about the end game. Even like dumien said as much, " The endgame is where it's at".....I put up a post earlier today, where I talked about how I felt rushed playing last night. I feel a need to get to that point. I need to catch up, to get to high levels, so I can do the crazy fun stuff. That's a good point, I gave it some thought, and concluded that the two schools of thoughts don't contradict with each other. On the one hand: there is a stage when a player is at 20-. This is a period that the player has the freedom to play solo (many are forced to due to constraints of real life, e.g.: me ) and can still feel competent. If a player is having fun at this stage (and IMHO only players who enjoy the game at this stage can truly enjoy the "better" end game), there is no hurry to feel compelled to rush to the "end game" part. If you do that, you may spoil the fun that you should have had (say you are playing with a couple of friends who are much more experienced and/or higher level than you are, they may fast track the game pace way out of your comfort zone). On the other hand, players will reach level 20 sooner or later (even for a player who has very limited play time, Bungie intentionally made this reachable within weeks). Once you get to this stage, and assume that you have been having fun until this moment, it is almost inevitable for you to crave for "more": more fun, more challenging enemies / situations, more interesting weapons/loadouts, etc. To get "more" of these things, you will be "encouraged' to have "more" friends to play together, because the "funner" part requires cooperation of multiple players) . This is when the game "naturally" unfold for you, and revealed "the better" part (as taunted by Bungie) naturally. Take me again for an example: since I can't effectively part with friends right now, after I pushed my Warlock to level 20 and both subclasses' upgraded tree ~50% unlocked, I switched to the hunter because I am still having enough fun at lower level. If I can get that to 20 and still can't party up effectively, I'll do Titan next. (An anecdotal story as a side bar: two days ago I was trying to play the Strike mission that was also available in beta with 2 randoms, and I was surprised by how painful the experience was. The two guys had almost no sense of self preservation, and there were no effective communication, so I was forced to play the "anchor" role, in other words the player who tries to stay alive all the time so we don't all die and get sent back to replay the checkpoint. A mission that should have taken 30 minutes went on for 90 minutes, and I had to quit due to real life right before we took out the final boss, who only has 1/4 of the full health left. Very frustrating, but kind of fun ) By the time I have the freedom to party up, I will be truly ready to play the end game content, not feeling being rushed at all. There is no hurry, because I will be at the same ranks as my more advanced friends by December at the worst, just in time when the first expansion pack is coming out. I intend to play this game for quite a while (say at least a year, in an off and on fashion), so I don't intend to play in so much hurry to the point that I feel sick of the game too soon.

Regarding Crucible, I loved the beta experience more than any bro here (because I am Halo try hard wanna be but not good enough for that game, and Destiny gives me a much easier play ground to have the same fun), but I have not yet touched it after the launch of the full game.
Why? That's a good question.
The primary reason is probably because I am having fun with PvE, even at 20- level, and there are too much to do with so little time so I can't even begin to think about PvP.
A secondary reason, is because I start to see that the way Bungie intended for the game to be played is PvE as the main focus, while PvP as a fun secondary activity the players can taste from time to time. To make a (not very good) analogy: PvE is like full meal (of breakfast/lunch/dinner), while PvP is like dessert/snacks. A (normal) person can't live without former, while the latter is optional but can serve as a good escape from former from time to time, for some people.
I was checking out Twitch streams the other day, and noticed that even the most die-hard PvP streamers during the beta are playing PvE most of the time right now. That seems to be in line with my observations above.

I've been playing crucible almost exclusively since I've hit level 20. I'm still having quite a bit of fun with the game. I don't have a whole lot of time to play... I usually have just enough time do the crucible bounties each night. And I certainly never hit the 100 marks cap. I see a lot of the PvE elements to be geared towards people who have a lot of time to play and wait around to get organized with friends. But either way, I still see destiny as being a fulfilling game to a PVP person.

For these players, the "full meal" is the real life The consensus of this board on Crucible is it is not fun, to the point of hating it. Without having a chance to experience it myself, I have been wondering why it is the case: Is it because the experience itself lackluster? or Most of the bros of the board prefer more of a CoD style MP than Halo MP? I wonder what the consensus is like among Halo players (which is a significant minority)...

My guess is they feel it's too similar to Halo (althrough I feel like it's more similar to Titanfall, with a few Halo elements). The game certainly is floaty and also seems to want to trade kills rather than give them to the person with the better connection. I get why people hate fusion rifles and shotguns, as their one hit kill nature can be frustrating but it's really the same as shotguns in COD where if you get killed by one, you probably deserves it, and people miss the entire time that the enemy took to position themselves to kill you. And I guess that supers can be part of this too, as they're essentially killstreaks that OHK everything.
Edit: Also there's the "sliver of health" phenomenon where the vast variance in damages makes it so you get an enemy to just the slightest bit of red in their health bar when they kill you. And there's seems to be a lack of variety in game types and maps.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but Rumble seems to generate the highest number of marks/hour. The games seem to finish the quickest as the players all seem to congregate in the same area. Obviously you get to play the RNG game more often too. It's pretty boring but if you're low for the week a couple of hours will top you up.

In what few games I've played in Crucible with bros I found it quite fun even though I think we only won maybe half the games. Shotguns and fusion rifles were definitely there, but they didn't seem overpowered. I mean hell you have your vetical movement ability and the environments are mostly fairly large spaces. Even things like halls and doorways follow the Halo style of being about five times big enough to fit through most of the time. I dunno. It still feels to me like getting killed by a shotgun is the price you pay for letting an enemy get that close. Maybe people are expecting it to have to work like Halo where you had to do the shotgun/melee one two to put somebody down. Though, TTK's are a bit faster than Halo so I'm not sure that would be appropriate. If shotguns couldn't 1HK anything they would probably be worthless in PvP.
But then, I still haven't played enough Crucible to know much about it.

When I was level 5, 10, 15, ...I felt like the level 21+ players had a lot of their subclasses filled on their one chart, where it grants you extra melee time, reload, etc... That isn't leveled, from what I have been told, even though gun damage is. That being the case, one never knows if one is being killed due to lack of skill, or just lack of level. That's frustrating. It would be like playing the first 24 hours of your CoD MP experience with no perks whatsoever, while most of your opponents have every perks running on their character. How fun would that be? It would be miserable. I still can't believe Bungie allowed this. It makes no sense. Especially so when you consider, using CoD stats, that 80% of multiplayer players will play less than 24 hours on it. You are just chasing people away.

Honestly I don't think it's much different from CoD at all. Crucible is locked until level 5 for a reason, and you should have your grenades, vertical move, melee special attack, and super pretty close to then. So unless you just rush into Crucible as quickly as absolutely possible you actually do have your basic set of "perks" it's just that some other people have unlocked other "perks" you haven't unlocked yet, as well as some of the "pro perk" upgrades. On top of that the road from 1 to 20 isn't anywhere near as much of a grind as the road from 1 to 50 (or 60) in CoD... at least it sure didn't feel like to me. My Warlock hit level 20 last night and I've still only played the first two story missions on the Moon, and I AM taking them in order. heh I just got lots of XP from doing patrols, bounties, and one or two levels from crucible, and some farming. So I hit 20 long before finishing the story just because I like to dick around. ;p CoD always feels like such a slog for me that I've only bothered to ever prestige MW2 and BO1... and only once. I ain't no 10th prestige bunny. (Though I sometimes have delusions of grandeur RE:Titanfall... which I want to play a LOT more of if Destiny can loosen it's grip.)
Weapons also have some special things, but it's mostly extra ammo or stability under certain circumstances, ect. I think the only weapon unlock that I know of that adds damage (other than attack which is ignored in Crucible) also reduces rate of fire, so it somewhat balances, at least in TTK.
Yes, you start with only a small sample of all available "perks" to use CoD language, but you also earn them quicker and get closer to parity with the top level players pretty quick. Everyone will certainly try to min/max all their unlocks and it gets a lot of focus because that's what is available for you to customize, (your gear and subclass build) but most of it I feel doesn't make a huge difference vs someone a little lower level. We'll see if I still feel that way after I play more Crucible, but from what I have played I didn't shit my pants when I went 1v1 against level 25's. If anything I just enjoyed it more when I did kill them.

I didn't mind most of the pro perks in MW2 since they weren't all that hard to grind out, though a couple were torture. BO1 felt like much more of a slog on the pro perks, which was odd since you could spend your cash to get the weapons and perks you wanted and that was so much of an improvement! I loved cod cash. But I'm getting off topic there. ;3
I dunno. I still have to mess around with Destiny. There's more of a learning curve than CoD in some ways, but it's more learning systems than memorizing weapon matchups and such. Sure there are technically more weapons in Destiny, but there are fewer weapon types and among those usually only a few subgroups. I often find weapons with different names, levels, attack, and nearly identical (or completely identical) stats.

Okay, some first world problems here:
I got the hunter helm out of the engram from xur, but I allready bought the hunter chest armour from last week and fully upgraded it... Do I get those shards back when I dismantle it? The ability to keep the radar ads with all primaries sounds allot better than spawn with grenade energy.
This also goes for legendary gear I guess.
Since you want to be lvl 27+ for the raid, to get better legendaries... So you have to invest shards to get the raid done, to find better legendaries that you need to level again? That seems f*ckdup.
So my questions are:
Do you get invested shards back from dismantling armour? And if not, any tips how to limit the shard losses when aiming to raid in the future and going for lvl 30?
Thanks for any insights!

You only get two to three shards from dismantling legendary armour. The exception is the Queen Guard gear, which gives you zero now. There are better alternatives in gaining shards.
Edit: you get two character specific materials. Did the Devil Archon mission, which took about 5 minutes and it was a replica of what I already have. I guess this is why I can't get Shards from them now.

One strategy to speed up your progress for one specific class:
1) Pick your favorite class (usually the class of your first and highest level character); 2) get all 3 characters to be this class, and speed run them to level 20; (this part is a little bit painful, but can be done relatively quickly); 3) Play daily/weekly/public events on these classes to maximize your production (of materials, coins, etc)
Why do you want to do this:
a) You can share your armor pieces (which are class specific) among all 3 characters. This means that you can play all of them at the highest light level you have reached so far; b) First run of daily/weekly/public-event-gold-finish-per-day/Raid will give you very good rewards. With the ability to play all 3 characters at the highest level, you can maximize your production.
For example: weekly mission at level 28 will reward 9 coins per week. 3 characters = 27 coins(!). Also, VoG runs are the only way to get Raid gear, which are necessary to reach level 30. Be able to run it 3 times a week = reach level 30 much quicker statistically speaking, so you can have a shot at VoG hard as quickly as possible.
Drawback:
You won't be able to play other classes/subclasses. So this idea is best for bros who are grinding to level 30 and don't care much about class variability.

I certainly don't have time to relevel up my other characters, but then I don't really have enough time to hit the caps on marks or anything anyway and when I am high enough to raid I'll probably only be able to do it once a week as well anyway. So no biggie there, it's just going to take me fecking ages to get up there, but that's okay. I enjoy the game and want to keep playing for years anyway.

So no biggie there, it's just going to take me fecking ages to get up there, but that's okay. I enjoy the game and want to keep playing for years anyway. I am in the same boat (not in a hurry and plan to keep playing the game for months if not years to come). The above method is the best for players who have 1 character at level 26+, with the other 2 barely started. By investing ~10 hours per character to level up the other 2 to 20, with ~20 hours total, he will end up with high level characters at his max Light level, resulting in 3x production of his current volume. My strategy therefore is different from the above: 1) Create 3 characters of 3 different classes (like 3 babies were born); 2) Level them all up to 20 (like babies growing into teenagers); 3) Play them interchangeably, with one of them as the favorite. Play daily/weekly at the suitable level for each character, and after which spend most playing time on the most favorite. He will the one who goes to "Raid" college in the foreseeable future , the other 2 will get there eventually. This way I can still take advantage of daily/weekly rewards, just not nearly as efficient as the above method. One way or the other, I highly recommend everybody to create all 3 characters and level them up to 20. The initial investment is well worth the gain on the PvE side.
It will also benefit you in PvP, because you will have a much more diversified class/subclass portfolio to have fun with. Your lower level characters can be just as competitive as their "big brother", as long as they "borrow" the best guns from his brother before going into the Crucible field BTW, the Mark limit is not the main reason to do 3 characters of the same class, since each character has its own Mark counter (what's up with that BTW? Can't they just make Marks a shared pool across all characters like Glimmer? ). The Strange Coin production on the other hand is quite lucrative, and the ability to get Raid gears quicker statistically is even more tempting.

Okay... I'm sure it's just me... But I'm just not getting this light thing.
I played a bit tipsy and got my warlock to level 20. I exchanged my green armour for blue stuff with any light # I can get. I think light level is 15. What exactly does that mean? I know that there are a lot of websites out there telling me to get gear with as much of a light level as possible; I get that.
What I don't get is how do I actually level up? Does my light level mean when I kill certain mobs, that I get a certain amount of light and the more light I get the more I level (in other words, xp has been replaced by light?) Do I break down armour that I don't need, and will I get light points for it?
I'm still doing Cosmodrome patrol bounties to grind up my vanguard ranking and do public events... so level isn't that important to me.
But I just don't get the premise of how to level? The better the gear, the more light, the more light, I level?

The better the gear, the more light, the more light, I level? When you get a piece of gear, it has a certain amount of light. By leveling it and upgrading, you can generally add a little more light to it. The more light you have, the higher level you are. Once you reach level 20, the bar that shows your progress now shows light instead of XP. You can watch your level increase and decrease as you equip and remove armor. The higher level you are, the more damage you do, and the less damage you take, from enemies near your level. You do not receive light from breaking down armor. You will start to receive armor with light, as you use it and upgrade it, you will increase your level, and begin to find armor with progressively higher light. Eventually you'll replace your rare armor with legendary and exotic armor, then replace your legendary armor with legendary raid armor.

Light is a stat like defense, intellect, discipline, and strength. The cumulative total of all light on all equipped armor will determine your level. You need a predetermined amount of total light equipped for each level. For example for level 21 you need at least 20 light. If you hover over the light number you can see your "progress" to the next level.

The whole leveling experience is now based on gear and the light level it gives me... For example, with my light level of 15, I need to find +5 more light to get to 20 to get to level 21. So, instead of grinding for xp, I am grinding for faction points to get levels to get new armour for a high light level and that will make me gain levels that way?

First of all, this post should give you all the details you need on the "Light" path to 30: www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/2i7apt/guide_max_light_level_raid_gear/ . After reading through this post, you should have a solid idea of what rare/legendary/exotic armors you need to obtain and upgrade to climb up the levels. As I explained in OP, there are multiple ways to get armors with Light. Rely on loot is the simplest, but you are at mercy of RNG. You can also take control of the situation, by: 1) Get to Vanguard Rank 2, which will unlock legendary armor purchase from the 3 Vanguard Masters (1 of each class). Remember that you need Vanguard marks to buy these things, and they are expensive. So keep working on earning marks. There are many ways to earn marks. Besides completing daily/weekly missions, the best ways are a) chase public events, b) play weekly strike playlists. 2) Get to Crucible Rank 2, which will unlock legendary armor purchase from Crucible Master. Same deal here: you need Crucible marks, which you can earn by playing the hell out of Crucible. Also 100 mark limit. 3) Buy from Xur, the shady character who sells exotic armors/weapons/engrams every Friday to Sunday. To buy stuff from him, you need Strange Coins or Mote of Light. To earn Strange Coins, the sure way is to complete weekly missions, which will give you 3/6/9 coins for the first beat of the week, depending on the difficulty. This is the main reason why I recommend on getting 3 characters to level 20+, so you can triple your weekly production. To earn Mote of Light, the sure way is to keep accumulating XPs, which will be converted to 1 Mote of Light per 35K XP also. You can also earn Strange Coins / Mote of Light from decrypted engrams. The above takes care of how to obtain pieces. The next thing to worry about is upgrading them. You'll need 1) Plant materials, each planet has 1 kind. The way to get these is to "farm" them on various locations. This is why you need to get out of the earth and visit moon and other planets once in a while 2) Ascendant Shard (for Legendary and Exotic armor upgrade), while we are at it, please note that you should also be interested in Ascendant Energy (for Legendary and Exotic weapon upgrade). The 2 of them are referred as "Ascendant Materials" in game. To earn these: a) First public-event-gold-finish everyday will at least gives you 1, usually the Ascendant Shard; b) Daily / weekly missions could reward them too (e.g.: today's daily mission at level 24).

Regarding XP: you still need them because they can be turned into Mote of Light, which can be used to buy exotic engrams from Xur during his weekly sale.

thanks....
And I have left earth... I did a mission or two on the moon and I did a patrol there too. I'm mainly sticking to the cosmodrome to get me to level 2 of my vanguard, because I've been there for so long, that I know what I'm doing so I can grind the most efficiently there as well as I know the events there better.
Baby steps... soon I'll be bitching that I can't beleive I wasted all this time in Russia when I could be somewhere else

Baby steps... soon I'll be bitching that I can't beleive I wasted all this time in Russia when I could be somewhere else At this point you need to starting thinking about killing multiple birds, with multiple stones "Birds", in order of priority, loosely: Strange Coins Ascendant Shards (1 of 2 kinds of Ascendant Materials) Ascendant Energy (1 of 2 kinds of Ascendant Materials) Vanguard Reputations -> Vanguard Ranks Vanguard Marks Plant Materials XP -> Mote of Light Mote of Light Crucible Reputations -> Crucible Ranks Crucible Marks It's very difficult to rank them in order, because they are all kinda important. At level 20 - 23: suggested "stones" (just my 2 cents) per character, in terms of priority: 1) Daily: Get 1 public event gold finish out of the way. You can do it on earth, should take no more than 5 minutes if you know the event schedule there like the back of your hands . This will give you Ascendant Materials. 2) Weekly: get the level 22 weekly strike mission out of the way as soon as you have a big enough chunk of time to get it done. It will give you 3 strange coins; 3) Daily: see if the daily story mission is worth your while. If yes, do it; 4) Weekly goal: hit Vanguard Mark 100 limit. With your experience and tough gaming schedule, best way is to just chase the public events on earth. Each gold finish should reward you 5 marks; If you get all 4 above done on your primary character and still have time for the week, I highly recommend working on your 2nd character to level 20, then the 3rd. You won't regret your decisions. If you want to focus on your primary character, then play Crucible until you get the 100 Crucible Marks.
