I'm still only a hair ahead of you and you'll likely overtake me soon. I'm nearly up to 22 and just played first mission on Venus, still have one mission and the strike on the moon to do as well. It's just easier to jump on patrol, fire up Destiny Timers on my tablet and do missions and public events, can easily burn 15 minutes or 3 hours with no load screens.
I have yet to attempt any of the heroic stuff or anything... partly because I don't want to go on strikes I haven't yet encountered in the story mode. ;3

Thanks, Witty! I was thinking about asking what a person with limited time should focus on.

Um.... yea.....
So, I'm a teacher with buttloads of marking and prepping... a husband whose wife runs a daycare and thrives on adult conversation... a dad of two kids 4 and 14 months, the later who is insisting on throwing his adorable baby middle finger to his sleeping schedule and is waking up 4/5/6 times a night after 5 months of sleeping qwuite well.....
Vanguard rep first... once I get it to level 2, I'll start the other stuff

mannon markopolo If I were you, I would focus on earning Vanguard/Crucible marks to be able to buy 2 pieces of Legendary armor. You're capped at earning 100 of each per week, and you'll be able to buy a couple pieces of armor for 65 marks per piece. So if you already have 30 vanguard marks, you will be able to earn 100 this week and be able to buy two. On Friday, hit up Xur and purchase whatever piece of Exotic armor he is selling for your class. Then, purchase two legendary pieces of armor. That will give you a significant boost in rank, probably enough to start thinking about doing the raid with us.

mannon / markopolo: In a world where even 30 minutes gaming break is a luxury (so daily / weekly missions are out of the question), then three words: "public event farming". Check out the following video: Also, 2 things are your best friends when doing this: a) www.destinypublicevents.comb) Mobile App that provides public event timing

Talking about squeezing more Destiny "productivity" from very limited time:
You may or may not know that the regular story missions don't have to be completed in one setting. Say you only have 15 minutes, you can jump in, play until a checkpoint is reached (usually marked by "respawn restricted"), and quit the session. The next time you play that story mission, it should pick up where you left off (I am pretty certain about this, but do test it out to just be sure).
This way, you can "chunk" a single story mission into multiple bite sized sessions, and chew them up that way.
When would this be useful? when you drive a character from level 1 to level 20. After level 20 this is no longer a productive way to play the game.

Make sure to mix up planets once in a while because while you are going after public events you might as well pick up those shiny planet materials, which you'll need later for upgrade.

I have been using the phone app for a few weeks. This is very key.
One issue though. They say the events are not guaranteed. I've noticed this is true. And certain areas seem to be more reliable than others. Have other people noticed this? Take 'Earth'. The Mothyards is very reliable. If the app says it's going to be there, it will be there. But take the area The Divide. I've rushed there (on time) at least three times now and got stiffed. Timer clicked on, countdown started, and then ran out with nothing happening. Mothyards is almost perfect. Forgotten Shore is very reliable. The Divide, can have some misfires.
I think the Destiny system resets every day at 5am ET if you do this daily. But there are glitches/screw ups going on. I've done first time/daily runs in a public event, got a Gold Tier, and have been shut out with coin/Energy/Shard prize. This has happened at least three times now. And in each case, it was when running with a third character (after using my other two to get stuff)

Also, you are given gear with earning Vanguard Rep, but you do not for faction. Basically every even rep level you get armour, and every odd level you a weapon - both legendaries. And you get two upgrade materials with each and a class item I think.

I thought rep pts only matters for Vanguard/Crucible/etc level climbing.

Late night last night I had 4 consecutive misses, on 4 different planets/moon. I also noticed different apps & www.destinypublicevents.com could show different info. It is understandable since all of them are based from empirical info from the community. This weekend I plan to spend a day to "tour" all planets and get intimately familiar with public events . Need to earn 300 Vanguard marks per week on 3 separate characters, might as well become an expert on this...

If doing this for Marks, is it that much faster? One can get quick marks doing the Strike mission on the right side of the map. If you go solo, the game will give you friends. And you blow through most of the map, just doing the three stages. This will load you up on Marks.
I'm going the public event solely for the AS/AE stuff. Like you said, as a side bonus, you can load up on materials too. There is a public event that hits the Mars Scablands at times. This is another good one. This part of the map has the 'Iron' material loop on it. You can do an entire loop in under five minutes and pick up anywhere from five to ten iron pieces.

And you blow through most of the map, just doing the three stages. Both are good ways, which I believe I mentioned earlier. Public Events Farming is great for players who can't play long gaming sessions, because you can attempt 1 public event in less than 10 minutes. Strike playlists require at least 30 minutes commitment I think, longer if your teammates quit on you.

I have pushed hard to recommend having all 3 characters at 20+ level, so much so that I might now sound like a broken record . This time, I'll put up a video from Datto to convince you: Again, you have 2 choices: a) If you want to get to level 30 as fast as possible, make all 3 characters the same class; b) If you are not in a big hurry and want to have variety into your daily/weekly "production", make them of different classes; I am currently doing b), because I want to play all 6 subclasses. However, keep in mind that this is considerably slower than a).

The easy strikes on the right side of the menu (Tiger, Eagle, etc...), those can be done in 15 to 20 minutes.

You don't have to be level 29. I blew through those missions as early as level 25 I think. You always get paired up with two people. Just follow them through. There's always three 'hard' parts. Mooch off the randoms. The rest of the map? You just run by the enemies, don't even bother to stop.

Regarding getting legendary stuff with rep, you get it when you rank up any vendor. Faction, crucible, or vanguard.

Regarding comparing the 3 choices, there are discussion posts scattered around different threads. The gist is: 1) Vanguard path is much faster and most recommended; 2) Crucible path is considerably slower. When taking this path make sure to complete as many Crucible bounties as possible to speed things up (same goes with Vanguard bounties, but everybody knows that); 3) Faction path can combine your reputations earned through both PvE and PvP towards a single rank, so on the surface it might look pretty attractive. However, it is not recommended probably until after you reach Vanguard Rank 3, mainly due to much less attractive selections of what you can buy from vendors;

And you get two upgrade materials with each and a class item I think. What are you saying here? You get legendary gear for rep pts? I thought rep pts only matters for Vanguard/Crucible/etc level climbing. The Postmaster gives you engrams upon reaching Vanguard Rank 2. For Vanguard Rank 2, 4, so presumably 6, 8... you always get a legendary armour engram that always gives a piece of legendary armour when decrypted by Rahool. The same applies to weapons at Vanguard Ranks 3, 5, so presumably 7, 9.... This is my observation so far having both my Warlock and Titan to Vanguard Rank 3 and my Hunter at Vanguard Rank 5. I'd only bother with faction reputation if you are after something specific and then stop at that. So for my Warlock I stopped at Rank 3 to cover the weapons and armour for Future War Cult, while my Titan has stayed at rank 2. The choice in what the game gives you is random as I have two A1 scout rifles. Edit: Also, upon completing the Weekly Nightfall event, side missions awards are increased. The ones that offer 10 reputation points are increased to 12 and the marked targets rise from 25 to 31.

I was trying to explain that what wings has said in the post above, applies to factions as well. You get engrams and guns each time you rank up. For example, I got a legendary dead orbit scout rifle from the postmaster when I reached Dead Orbit level 3.

To help myself to prioritize different "stones" (activities) against different "birds" (rewards), I made the following table (Nightfall info incomplete):
| XP (~35K -> 1 Mote of Light?)
| Ascendant Material | Vanguard Mark | Vanguard Reputation | Strange Coin | Patrol mission - VIP |
| | | 25 |
| Patrol mission - non VIP |
|
|
| 10 |
| Public event gold finish (first of the day) |
| 1 - 2 | 4 |
|
| Public event gold finish |
|
| 4 |
|
| Lvl18 Strike playlist (Eagle) |
|
|
| 10 |
| Lvl20 Strike playlist (Viper) |
|
| 2 | 12 |
| Lvl22 Strike playlist (Wolf) | | | 3 | 14 |
| Lvl24 Strike playlist (Tiger) | | | 6 | 25 |
| Lvl20 Daily Story | 4800 | | 5 |
|
| Lvl24 Daily Story | 6000 | 1 | 5 | |
| Lvl28 Daily Story | 7500 | 2 | 5 |
|
| Lvl22 Weekly Strike | | | 3 | 150 | 3 | Lvl26 Weekly Strike | | | 6 | 250 | 6 | Lvl28 Weekly Strike |
|
| 10 | 400 | 9 | Nightfall Weekly Strike | +25% earn rate for the week
| Chance to reward 7 - 12 (?) |
| +25% earn rate for the week | Chance to reward several | Vanguard bounties (type 1) | 2500 |
|
| 50 |
| Vanguard bounties (type 2) | 5000 |
|
| 100 |
|
Note: Nightfall's rewards are random, you could get several Ascendant Materials and/or several coins and/or weapons/armors/engrams.
This might be useful for bros at low level 20s to plan their activities. What can these rewards be used for? 1) XP -> Mote of Light -> purchase exotic engram from Xur; 2) Strange coins -> purchase exotic weapon/armor from Xur; 3) Vanguard Rank 2+: Vanguard Marks -> purchase Legendary Armor from the 3 class-specific Vanguards; 4) Vanguard Rank 3+: Vanguard Marks -> purchase Legendary Weapon from the Vanguard Master; 5) Ascendant Material - Shards: upgrade legendary/exotic armor pieces; 6) Ascendant Material - Energy: upgrade legendary/exotic weapons; I could use some help from high level pros to fill the "Nightfall" row, since I am too low level to even see it appear as a selectable option.

There's nothing formally listed in the Nightfall category. I think the rewards are bit more random based, like the VoG?
Nice chart witty.
btw...
you might want to add the Crucible onto that. Crucible playing gets your Crucible 'Marks' and 'Rep Pts', which can later buy Legendary equipment and armor. Or if that stuff is not needed, you can break it down into Shards or Energy. That's another way to get AS's or AE's.
You get 2 or 3 Marks per Crucible game. And either 10 or 25 Rep pts per game.

I did some serious Google search yesterday, and the possible rewards seem to fall into the following categories:
1) 7 - 12 Ascendant shards; 2) 9 Strange Coins; 3) Legendary/exotic weapons/armors;
