Yes, three phases. Read my post on how I went from zero to level 32 in seven days. Here's the jist.
1. You need to do the story mode first to get to 20. Try to stay one level (+1) over the story level you are doing...so as to save time. So if your level is below all missions, run a few crucible games to level up one or two. Here's the deal. You don't want to get into some protracted battle in those missions. Like drag out some 30 min mission. Your goal isn't to have fun. It's to get them over as fast as possible. Just race through. Again, don't worry about plot. Turn on some music, smoke a bowl, and just move fast.
2. Once at level 20, you don't need levels anymore. Leveling is determined by the armor you wear. So you will need to get better armor. The Easiest way? Collect 13 coins while you do the story and other stuff. Focus on things to get them (bounties, etc..) Then you buy an exotic armor piece asap, like this Friday morning. There's a level 42 piece. You get one 42, with even just three 20-pieces, that puts you right away at level 28 (102 light) You can now start doing strikes like the PoE level 28, ROC strikes, and the level 26 & 28 weeklies (which give you more coins)
3. You want to focus on doing higher level strikes (ROC, PoE28, etc..) because that will help get the other three pieces to move up, via two game mechanics..... 1) You can sometimes get legendary armor pieces from strike drops after the game or engrams. And two, even if you don't get those, you will get 'Marks' from doing the strikes, or from Crucible. Like 6 to 8 each completion. These marks are currency to buy Level 36 pieces from the Vanguard or Crucible vendors.
The problem here you will face here? You need to get three pieces to get into higher level strikes below, to join up with bros in what they are doing. And also, to get the best drops. And each armor piece is around 75 to 150 marks. You can only earn 100 per week. You can do the math. time. But you should be able to get one Lv 36 purchases in a week, maybe two if you work the Crucible. 42+36+36+20 = 134 = level 31. You are getting close. This could be done in a week.
Most people these days are doing the following (75% of their activities)
PoE Skolas - lv34 PoE Level 34 PoE Level 32 Nightfalls - lv 32 Weeklies - 30
Those are the big ticket prize modes. So level 32 is your goal.

It sounds like I need DLC for some of this stuff. Is it completely pointless to play past level 20 if you don't have DLC?

Without DLC you can't do Prison of Elders, and once in a while you won't be able to do the weekly and Nightfall. The latter is not a big deal, only happens at most once per month; The former is not that a big deal either because you won't reap most of the benefit until you reach level 30+ (so you can play level 32/34/35 PoEs); Since at this stage you are just planning to get through the basic content and then take a shot at VoG, you only need to reach level 26 (min level to let you play VoG). You can do that reasonably fast without any of the DLCs. As soon as you get to level 26, the PS4 bros can easily carry you through VoG. You can then assess whether the raiding experience is worth investing time into this game.

That could be tricky. I am going to have to defer on that. I don't remember what is locked and unlocked with the two DLCs

If you do decide that you like the game enough to keep playing, you may want to just get the TTK Collector's edition: which has a $80 price tag that includes Base Destiny game; The 2 DLCs; The Taken King expansion; a bunch of digital and physical items. One of them in particular is an XP boost that's great for new players; If you decide to go with that, you might as well join us on XONE side so you can grind on two fronts

That's the thing, looks like getting the current DLC + the new one when it comes out is a $75 adventure vs $80 to slip on over to the other side.

Anyways, let's not worry about the DLC and TTK for now. At this point you just want to level up, and with vendors selling legendary armor pieces of 36 light and Xur selling exotic armor pieces of 42 light it has never been easier. To reach level 26, you need a total of 76 light off your 4 pieces of armors. You can easily get there with 2 purchases or even 1 purchase. As iw5000 has stated: a) to get legendary armor: you need to reach rank 2 on vendor reputation and have 75 marks; b) to get exotic armor, you need 13 strange coins and the vendor ("Xur") only shows up every week between Friday morning and Sunday morning. For more info, check out this thread: denkirson.proboards.com/thread/7367/destiny-smartis-guide-armors-lightUnfortunately lots of info in my original post has become obsolete (for huge improvement of much less grinding, e.g.: you no longer need to worry about ascendant shards and planet materials). The last table in the post of how to earn different stuff through different activities should still be applicable. Which class are you playing as? With that info we can further help you decide on which vendor rep and what kind of marks (Vanguard or Crucible) to grind for.

For the record, I accidently tested the time to do complete a gun leveling process.....the old way versus the new guns. I recently rerolled an older Jolders and set off to level it up with bounties, while also leveling up a new gun. Same bounties for both guns, all factors held equal. I got the new gun fully leveled up...and the Jolders (old gun) was still only about 55% of the way done. So the new changes on leveling up gear & guns, it almost cuts one's playing/grinding time in half.
TL/DR...for Pegusus....with these new changes going on now, you'll only have to grind half as hard as we originally did, when doing armor and weapon leveling.

gosh darn golly gee whiz, was excited to hop on and do some Destiny and boom, PSN is down. Go figure. I'll add PS4 players from this thread when I get a chance, my PSN ID is "Franzy". I figure I probably want to hit level 20 is it (?) before I start crashing your fire teams or whatever. Seems like there's still a bit for me to do solo. A whole bunch of us sent out FR's last night while Hawk was gifting the Gorgon chest.

I'm just about level 20, I figure I'll finish the single player plot stuff and start figuring out how the 'end-game' stuff works a little better sometime after I wake up, but it's sleep time now.

Joking aside: it is probably a wash on the money front. Stay on the PS4 side: 1) buying both DLCs: ~ $35 (probably less if you can find deals, and probably will discount a lot more once TTK is out. Plus: you have the option to pick and choose, e.g.: skip the first DLC and only get the second DLC) 2) buying TTK: $40 It will definltely cost you < $80 unless you want the extra digital stuff, which cost additional $20; Buy the digital collection on XONE: $80, containing everything, and you have the option to play the games on both platforms (however, that might not be practical because 1) you have to grind twice as hard, and 2) you have to buy the DLCs and TTK on the PS4 side). At the end of the day the fundamental question is probably boiling down to this: which group of friends would you prefer to play Destiny with: PS4 bros or XONE bros.I say pick us because of our history of Titanfall and the possible future of Halo5, but PS4 bros are probably equally awesome

I don't mind spending a few bucks on the game, keep in mind that I got it for free, and even sold one of the extra copies for like $35, so far the game is pure profit. I have my disc copy still sealed as I prefer the digital, I guess I could sell that before TTK comes out and renders it worthless, or I can keep it as a trophy. Just how grindy is it to play both versions? I've managed to put around 400 hours into Battlefield Hardline combined on PS4 and Xbox One.
I <3 my X-Bros, but I should probably get to know some PS4-folk in time for Black Ops 3...

Just how grindy is it to play both versions? That's a great question! Let's see, number of hours Destiny played, from XONE phone app: Me (GT = WittyScorpion72): 1099 hours Dumien (GT = Post IXI Mortem): 1523 hours iw5000 (GT = StoneColdLoad): 1417 hours I've managed to put around 400 hours into Battlefield Hardline combined on PS4 and Xbox One. Keep in mind though the time reported by XONE app is known to have bugs (at least for me Titanfall's game play time stopped incrementing long before I stopped playing), so take the number with grain of salt. For example: I have hard time time believing Post "only" played 1.5x more than I do, it should have been at least 3x.

How much of that time is spent idling though? I'm using actual in round time from battlelog. I have 235h or so on the Xbox One version there and 307 on the app. Granted, some of that was clearing out the single player achievements, but I don't really idle in Battlefield at all either. I'm hoping you guys idle in the game. A lot.
Titanfall is 609 hours in game time vs 987 on Xbox One app for me.
edit: and you know.. Battlefield came out in March compared to September.

it was 1700 hours by the time i got my first gjallarhorn. I'm currently around 2K.
You gotta realize that a large portion of my time played is autopilot stuff that I can do while chatting with friends/watching tv/studying.
P.S. you should have gone on the XB1 side. Most of the gaf "Titan brehs" play Destiny. Everyone here could have carried you heheh.
Recently we carried one of Ji66a's friends from 1-34 in 16 hours of play time. It is possible...admittedly he did get fairly lucky.

I have apparently played *only* 306 hours. How is 1,500 hours even possible?!?! That is 62.5 days. Nonstop. 24/7. That might be accurate. Take myself. I will typically have Destiny up and running on my TV all evening twice a week. Get home from work, eat, workout....then turn the TV/Xbox on. We typically all hang out in my man cave. Destiny will be up and running all evening (5 to 6 hrs) I might not be actively playing the whole time. Sometime just park my character for a while while doing other shit....but off and on all evening. If no one is around, I'll leave it up hoping someone hits me up. Also, I typically do the same every morning. When the kids are in school, I'll get them up at 530am, get some coffee, then screw around on the net while also getting Destiny on. Typically 2hrs there most days. I don't go to work until 8 or 8:30. There's 22 hours a week right there. Almost 1,000 hrs. Haven't even included ant time on the weekends. Btw. No GHorn.
