On one hand it's really hard to believe that something with this much money behind it would be this poorly conceived. On the other hand it's not that hard to believe a cable network/eSport deal going horribly awry. This can't be one of those attempts to make controversy and draw attention to get more eyes on something, can it?

Is not having the existing eSports teams as owners in Overwatch a detriment? Seems like they're looking for investors with a lot more money. Someone like Robert Kraft might not know jack about eSports, but he's smart enough to hire people that do. Jerry Jones can't run a successful NFL franchise, but he sure can run a successful business - if I was behind the league I'd be a lot more interested in getting him involved than [insert generic esports team name here].

If they can get the investors now, why work up to it? Sure, they might be able to go the more traditional route and try to close ground on the existing games, but like you said, there's not a lot of profit to be had there. They might spend a few years getting to where LOL is now, only to find at that point no one is willing to pay $20 million for a team that barely makes any money. Or, they can go for the Jerry Jones' and Mark Cubans of the world now, sell them it while it's in an early stage but a proven game, with characters that clearly resonate, from a company that made Starcraft. Those are the guys that can help them get on TV, get mainstream coverage, etc. Why look to build a mediocre, barely profitable esports product? Seems like they're trying to leapfrog the other games.

That $20 million is what they're asking, not necessarily what they'll get. I agree there aren't a lot of billionaires with a passion for esports. But there are probably some billionaires with children with a passion for esports that see it might be the next big thing. There are some billionaires that see it as a decent investment. There are some that own traditional sports teams that see it as a way to diversify their portfolio in case esports erodes their current team's value. Then there are some with FOMO; my guess is if you spent long enough you could make a sale just by presenting a list of people that passed on buying sports franchises at prices that they regretted.

Yeah that was my initial assumption. That the 20m was more of a negotiating price point and they were planning to lower it. But at the same time i dont think this will be anywhere close as successful as they seem to expect. I'll be pleasantly surprised if they pull it off but we'll have to see when more comes out about this. Why do you think it will not be successful as they expect? The game has experienced wild success for a new IP, and is probably more popular with regard to esports than any game was at just under a year from launch. It's designed to have the broadest possible appeal, with a wide range of characters representing the entire globe that have resonated deeply with consumers. It's colorful and visually stimulating, and although it's an FPS it doesn't portray violence in a way which will make parents stop their kids from watching. What's going to hold it back?

So I started playing again recently. I hopped right back into comp at the end of season 3, after not playing since the end of season 1. I think I went 9-17, and ended up with an SR of 2,508. I do my placement matches for season 4, go 7-3, get an SR of 2,105. Makes no sense.

Season 1 used a different system, but I was generally in the 80-90th percentile. This season, I'm currently sitting in the 24th percentile.

Then you have to factor in how communities get collectively better at a game when the playerbase stabilizes and fewer newcomers come along. Thus an "average" player 2 months ago can be below average today.
It also doesn't help how every playable character was changed throughout the history of Overwatch, which can really screw with how the game works depending on how long you've been out.

Doomfist. He's real, and he's here.
Edit: Animated short showing Doomfist breaking out of prison while recalling how he was captured.

this was quite the topic of conversation at a party last Saturday night. I've been playing video games for about 30 years now and I couldn't understand a goddamn thing they were saying

Damage spread is a legitimate practice and should always be exercised outside of D&D.

I haven't watched all the matches yet, but by the looks of it South Korea has almost never given up a point to the enemy team thusfar. Meanwhile the US's victory against Germany was from a lot of close calls despite the 3-0. It's gonna be another slaughterfest from Korea, isn't it?

Based on what I've seen I'm going to bet that: -China beats France decisively. Don't even need to look that one up. -EDIT: Canada's team is a lot better and has a more likely chance of winning over Australia -Sweden decisively wins out over the UK -US no longer has a joke team BUT if Korea loses my avatar will go back to being autism beaver
-China vs South Korea will be a greater matchup than the finals. It will be epic. -I don't care who else makes it into the finals, but it's probably Sweden. Depending on the map Canada might pull a pharmercy and wreck house on Lunar Base, but it's unlikely.

It's not even that- China has been performing a lot better this season. They're probably pulling 12-hour days, too.
